  1. Nice article; this would make a good mix tape! I love this observation: "Dexter’s always been a favorite, and here’s a great example of his giant sound at full power. It’s also a good example of jazz rocking harder than rock music." Another example is "No Tonic Pres" off Rip, Rig & Panic.
  2. Agreed on Riley and Wright. Also going to add Irene Schweizer. Those Intakts are absolutely locked in the mid-$20 range. I've never seen one of hers for much less.
  3. I was inspired to grab a new Warne Marsh album, but a glance at Amazon reveals nothing affordable that I don't already have. Damn ...
  4. Can you expound on the Mapleshade issue?
  5. Steve, I know you're also a huge fan of the Hemingway 5. I was listening to Waltzes, Two-Steps, & Other Matters of the Heart (culled from multiple shows, alas) the other day and was just newly blown away by how insanely good that band and those songs are. Complete and total mastery. How how how do you so consistently write such melodic, complex, challenging, engaging and above-all enjoyable tunes? Gerry did it, and they played it with ease. And that's how it sounds: so easy!
  6. He's one where if he's on it, I'll check it out. I certainly need more but really enjoy what I have. Blowing In From Chicago and The Highest Mountain are favorites. One of the great examples of a player evolving with the times. I wish someone would collect all the Magic Triangle recordings in one package.
  7. YES. I have been dying for this since I heard. Ordering NOW.
  8. I'm about certain that the new copies sold by Amazon proper ARE indeed the "generic" represses. I would buy secondhand.
  9. So excited to hear the Izenon-Brackeen albums, finally.
  10. I'd like to hear that, but at 55 euro, it's doubtful.
  11. I'm excited to hear the new Ches Smith's These Arches on Clean Feed. I dug the date on Skirl, and more time playing together + the addition of Tim Berne sounds like success to me.
  12. There is a Jazztet Mosaic at Reckless.com for $150. Not a bad price for a scarce one.
  13. I don't know a lot of his stuff, but I really liked the album with Ron Carter & Paul Motian.
  14. Those Jazz Scene USA log sheets are fascinating! Thanks for posting them.
  15. I don't think the later stuff meets Mosaics "standards", as it were, and the earlier stuff has been served extensively by the CD market under the aegis of Cuscuna himself. A dead end, methinks.
  16. The drummer Steve Ellington, who worked with Sam Rivers, Roland Kirk, Dave Holland, Art Farmer, Hal Galper, Hampton Hawes & others has died.
  17. I was thinking of the Bill Dixon Savoy.
  18. Love his work on Mingus at the Bohemia & Plus Max Roach. I know he played on a couple other sides I own (besides TB&TAT) but I can't quite place them. An interesting fellow.
  19. PM sent on Sonny Criss Imperial.
  20. The Who's Crazy soundtrack. I have it on an Affinity double LP, but it has appeared in other forms. Right, forgot about this one. Still trying to find a copy at a palatable price.
  21. Can anyone give an accounting of what recordings are available, legit or not, from the Trio? I have the ESP, BN Golden Circle albums, the Arista London set, and the Cryodon boot. What else could I get my hands on?
  22. New Roscoe Mitchell duets album with Tyshawn Sorey + Hugh Ragin on Wide Hive. I'm there.
  23. Still can't quite beat when bestbuy.com listed the Coltrane Side Steps box for $13.
  24. Same here. Faith in humanity = restored.
