Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
blajay replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Freddie Redd. Thanks Dan--it arrived safely a little while back, and I hadn't gotten to enjoy until now. Great stuff--pretty much what I expected after watching The Connection a long time ago. -
up People not going to this? I guess it is one of those big auditorium things with a group that doesn't normally play together, and most have probably seen the members before. I haven't, though. -Jay

http://www.stanfordjazz.org/jazzfestival/08_04.html I don't want to miss this on Monday. I don't own a car, and most of my friends aren't down. I could rent a car, but since I just missed meeting trane fanatic at the George Lewis event the other day, I thought I'd try to be social for once... BFrank, Brandon Burke, trane fanatic, Big Wheel, BeBop, Bruce H, Jim R--are any of you (or anybody else in the SF Bay Area I may have missed) going to this, and if so, can I hitch a ride and pay for gas?

Gerald Wilson Mosaic is running low

Somebody, please, tell me something bad about it before my mouse gives way... -
Yeah, I was wondering the same thing about Kelley being sort of new to Jazz. I've only studied his works in other contexts. Freedom Dreams is an excellent Black Radical history book--not a lot of jazz there (if any). I do admire him and feel like minded enough politically, socially, and it seems ontologically to believe he'll come out with something I'll find nice on Monk, though. Just saw this: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...ic=3313&hl= I guess we can keep this thread to George Lewis--organissimo has yet again already covered the topic at hand haha.

Well trane, I would have introduced myself if I had known what you look like--I was sitting on the right in black sweater with glasses and dark hair. What a genius George is (I guess he did get the MacArthur after all)! I haven't heard someone that eloquent speak in a long time. He read portions of his book on the Great Migration, the AACM in Paris, gender roles in the AACM, and race, among other themes, such as his methodology, that he touched on in a question and answer format. While he signed my book, I had a pleasant albeit brief discussion with him on ethnography/cultural studies and his friendship with another author I admire a lot--Robin Kelley (who will be coming out with a Thelonious Monk bio soon). I dream of studying with one of them some day. Roscoe Mitchell was in the room, too, and I got him to sign it also! All in all, a very stimulating evening at City Lights. -Jay

Does anyone have this? Any comments? http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Studio-Reco...8102&sr=1-2 I'm deciding whether to grab/look for the BN trio and quintet (after having read David Rosenthal's Hard Bop) plus the Riker's Island albums or if this is good enough by itself. Thanks, Jay

Although not a lefty, here is a relative story about Bud Powell by Yetty Lee in 1955 Jazz Magazine, quoted in Francis Paudras' touching book: "One night at Birdland, Bud Powell was at the piano, in great form. Art Tatum was in the audience. Tatum, known for being stingy with his compliments, said he thought Bud's left hand was a little weak. When someone repeated the comment to Bud, he took out a pocketknife, cut his own hand, then crudely bandaged it up and went on playing with the sefl-inflicted handicap. He showed such virtuosity in both hands that Tatum was dumbfounded. Some say he never forgave Bud."

Any word from MC on a Three Sounds Mosaic? I know they have said in the past that there is just too much material for one, but that could apply to Art Blakey or Jimmy Smith, where they still at least came out with a set of the sessions from a particularly cookin' and/or OOP month or year. Couldn't they do that for the Three Sounds? And I've heard they think one wouldn't sell well--perhaps even because it is marketed as a group rather than individual names, but I know there are a lot of us who would spring for a set, including myself.

My favorite Pablo (aside from the Tatum sets):

Totally agree ! Very fine 2LP set, will dig it out. This is one I don't have. I ordered it from Newbury, through amazon--it's only $6.99. What is the title in reference to? Something Brazilian--Bossa? Blakey's nickname was Buhania, which is close--he's not on this album, though, is he?
