yeah seems he was the only bassist, at the time! He must be the bassist on at least 85 % of the cds i own. Yeah I know Percy plays cello alot, the picture on the front page of the newspaper had him in his kitchen with a cello.

Joe Morello talked to me about her a lot. I have her Live At Shanghai Jazz. You like that? I thought there were about 5 good songs on it. It was kind of a bore. -
Some musicians say they stuck with one instrument their whole life, and never got tired of it. I am constantly going back and re-examining my playing, not being satisfied with how I sound, and what instrument I am playing. I started out on drums, but fairly recently, I just needed something with melody. I played trumpet for a while, but I just got no chops on it. So I went back to drums. But then I took piano lessons, I got pretty good at jamming, but for my lack of jazz chords, I stopped telling myself I was gonna be a piano player. So of course I went back to drums, I have always wanted a saxophone, but can't afford it. I tried2 play guitar for about a year, (on and off, about 25 % of the year was playing it, I hardly played it often) with no success. But recently I have gotten good at it. I solo pretty good and can move pretty swiftly up and down the neck. But for my lack of chord knowledge, and guitar not being heard as much as a sax or piano, it got me down. So I tried bass so I didnt have to learn any chords, but then the issue of needing an up right and how much they cost came in so I got down on myself again. Allright, I need an instrument with a melody, so currently I'm with guitar.I just need to learn chords pronto. I can solo great, just dont know any chords. some suggestions on this would be helpful.) Heres the main thing. Since the guitar isnt used as often as other horn instruments such as saxophones and trumpets, I am trying to model my guitar playing after horn men, (Newk, Trane, Miles, Mobley, Garland, Jamal, everyone!!!) Do you do this? (Model your sound on your instrument like someone else who plays a completly different instrument as you?)

We just had a topic on this. Oh well, he deserves two topics.

Really?? Haven't heard. A solo cd? That must be his first ever album udner his own name. There was an article about him in the paper once. He lives over here on Long Island. Yeah some 80 year olds still swing, but some just grow deaf. I'm so sorry for saying this, but my friend, played with these really old cats and he recorded it, I think it was night train. I was like it must be the tape, it sounds like its not in tune, and he replied "its not!" laughing. But I love those old-timers!

I gotta march 3 and a half miles in the parade with a snare drum on my shoulder.

I would like to design album covers one day if I had the talent. Usually when I'm bored I just draw an album cover with made up names and songs, its really fun!. I know it shouldn't be, but the album cover is usually how I determine if I'm gonna buy the album or not. I kind of, "judge the book by its cover," if you know what I mean.

One of my favorite albums too! The reissue of the album (with the original non-Cat-ner cover ), is due out on April 12th. I know. It was already issued about three years back, but ever since Alpert has been re-mastering ALL of his Tijuana Brass recordings, it's coming back out in April on the Signature Series. I already have Lonely Bull, South Of The Border, and a CD of Tijuana Brass cuts never before been heard and released.

This is a hard one. They both swing really hard. They were both prefect for Blakey's band.

This music makes me naucious.

you're missing Al Hirt! Or was he on that list..
-
One of my favorite albums too!

Bird, who knows what the music would have been at least 20 more years he would have had to record. What more music he would have composed. He left his mark and will be remember as the greatest musician even 100 years from now.
-
All of his Tijuana albums. He loved them so much, but they dont get as much attention as his down home jazz albums on Columbia, and of course, CANDID.
-
I love the OJB recordings! So interesting. Rest in peace, Pete's son.

No I havent ever got payed for a gig yet. I mostly play with my friend, (30 years old) who is my ticket to all the jazz guys around here, he has a lot of friends, and brings me to jam. I'll never forget my first time jamming with these guys. WE started with All Blues then after the bassist soloed, (I play drums too) I remember he shouted out to the guitarist, "lets give it to the kid!" It was awesome soloing in 3/4 for my first solo. At the end, they all said to my friend "man he blows you away," laughing. It's funny I guess my friend didnt really have any brush training, so he sat me down, and I showed him all my brush strokes. He has also brought me to a lot of people's houses, some 80 years old! I was sitting at the drums and this 70 year old guy, came in and started playing Samba De Orpheous, and i swung with him. It was great when he shaked my hand and told me I was good. And my teachers most encouraging quote was, "You swing!" That was great for me. And in some I played at some show, some guy told my dad I play like Chico Hamilton. I hope to do this for a living. I hope to jam on guitar and bass soon. My favorite bassist is Charlie Mingus, for solo albums. But I love to see Paul Chambers, as a sideman. Gene Wright and Percy Heath are also favorites.

That's what I'm trying to say.

whatever you wanna call it. It seems funny how grown ups make fun of kids, when THEY WERE KIDS ONCE. and how kids make fun of grown ups when, THEY WILL BE ONE SOMEDAY. I dont get the world.

They're not my elders. They are just other people on the internet.

I stay away from solo albums. Jazz is supposed to be conversations with different people. I prefer groups.

he lied. I'm done, you three have your immature conversation.
