  1. Can we define Hack please?
  2. Jazz Kat

    Miles Davis

So you like music that's not surprising?
  3. Yes, it allows, but sometimes I get made fun of or whatever for something I say.
  4. Wow, you are focused! I usually, (what am I talking about... Like 20 times a day!), throw on a cd, and just play along, either on guitar, or drums, or play electric bass, just hoping and wishing for an acoustic one. I read a little bit, but mostly just play along to some disks.
  5. Miles Davis, Super Hits. (cheesy compilation)

What do you think of Miles Davis's real late recordings, such as Time After Time, and Human Nature? I think they sound a lot like late Herb Alpert. That must of been the hot sound for the trumpet in the 80's.
  7. Its fine you dont like Martin Denny. I found his Hawiaan albums very hard to dig at first. It is odd that they were all hyped more about you not liking Denny then whatever Che said.
  8. I got that one. I also have the the lp, A Taste Of Honey. It's more jazz influenced than his usual exoctica albums. It was a nice album.
  9. Hawiaan pianist. (he was American, but his music was of Hawiaan influence. Well most of it. It sometimes had just the slightest influence of jazz.
  10. Can someone tell me the name of that Blue Note story DVD, so I can take a look at it on amazon?
  11. Who considers the G(ay) Man jazz at all? hmmmm
  12. No I didnt see it, but then again I haven't been here in a while. The Martin Denny thread? His hawiaan albums were quite hard to dig at first, but I love his album he made of show tunes. Julius Wechter was his mallet man, and I dig Julius Wechter.
  13. Yeah I love that, "Page cannot be displayed," art!
  14. Wow, must of been cool. Now, if only Mobley... Got to hear Hank Mobley with Miles, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb a couple of times. The second time the group had J.J. Johnson in it as well (Jazz Gallery, NYC) but no recording has ever emerged with that lineup.
  15. How dare you question the JazzKat! He's been playing guitar now for months and he has years of experience. After all he is 15 you know! oh boy. I have about 15 years of experience. Not in guitar, but I have been playing the drums and have been listening to jazz for practicially all my life. Yeah I know, big woop, but that's longer than you right? Are you the guy who has been listening to jazz for about 4 years? Or is that someone else?
  16. Jazz Kat, isn't "knowing the tune in your head" what memorization is? Just trying to figure out what you're saying. My original point was that if it is a tune you don't know, how can you "figure it out during the first four bars", when you haven't heard the whole form yet? If it's a tune you do know, what's left to figure out? Or are you talking about remembering the tune by hearing the first four (or so)bars? I think when one develops one's ears it is possible and common to play well on unfamiliar tunes by just listening to the changes once or twice. Ever hear that recording of Bird sitting in w/Woody's band? He plays on Four Brothers (which is not your run-of-the-mill chord progression) and you can tell he's feeling out the tune, and on each subsequent chorus he nails it even more. Allright. I dont have any memorized on my instrument. But they are in my head! Like if someone says to me play Satin Doll, I dont know if it starts on a friken A or Z, but I know it in my head! So I try to bring it out on the guitar, piano, vibes, whatever I am playing.
  17. My mom has that album! yuck
  18. He did. See my post above. Wow, must of been cool. Now, if only Mobley...
  19. well if you already know the tune in your head....
  20. I got nothin rare! Just priceless, (literally) cd's and posters.
  21. I dont have any memorized. I usually figure it out during the first four bars.
  22. I think it would have been cool if Coltrane appeared at Carnegie Hall. And I was thinking Blue Note should of released more live albums. A Hank Mobley Live At the Carnegie Hall Album, (Blue Note) that's one of my fantasy albums.
  23. And you got the only picture of him right? actually, i do - here it is! You own it?
  24. So one conclusion may be that Miles Davis helped create smooth jazz? I can see another Phd in this Che. Not really, exactly. I'm not saying Miles Davis and those early fusion artists created smooth jazz, I'm saying they are the reason for it.
