  1. i hope he gets better, from all the fans in Uk,paul
  2. What a great album Manhattan Latin is, just played it after 4 years, sounds good still.Although Sandunga is rated as the best track, i prefer La Playa as its really strong, and you can tap your feet along with the rhythm. Also Aphrodite as it has a moody undertone, that keeps you listening, anybody have any thoughts on this super little album?
  3. Mike, new tenant has just moved into next door. I was playing Cubano chant, from Ritmo Caliente, he knocked on the door, and said who is that your playing? Being from Colombia he really digs his salsa. He loved the music, so i burnt him a copy, so another Tjader fan is hopefully born.
  4. Most of the saba and mps lps were never reissued, although its great quality music. best you check out gilles peterson compilations,Themes from the black Forest, volumes 1'2'3', absolutely essential and brilliant, all the favorites and more, %100 worth buying, if you can still get them, $80 on eBay, good luck, paul
  5. Brilliant band, seen them 5 times, a slightly different vibe though, but when you get it, its amazing.Suggest Letter from Home, Still Life Talking or First Circle, Lyles Mays, a jazz Mozart, enjoy, Paul London
  6. Dont you love the way Milo's Other Samba justs goes off, a great cd, took me sometime to get in london, but well worth the wait. Just listening to Buddy making those drums talk, magic, pity Cal never did a small combo album with him, that would have been absolutely amazing, what do you think? paul Uk
  7. Mike you must of noticed that when they reissud Cal tjader Sextet with Stan Getz, they re titled it to sound like Cal was guesting with Stan , what a bloody liberty. Obviosly stan being better known than Cal, made the record more ameniable to jazz fans not conversant with the Tjader style, so it had a reverse effect? What do you think, paul
  8. does anyone have the original emarcy copy of Buddy Rich, the Driver, theres a brilliant vibe solo by Mike Manieri, absolutely breakneck speed, alovely tune called a Swinging serenade, and two swinging Versions of Night in Tunisia and straight no chaser, superb small combo jazz. It was the second album i bought in 1980, and it changed my life? when i met mike years later when he did an interview on jazz Fm in london, he wanted to buy the lp from me. Apparrently buddy asked him to play with him at some gig. Mike just went with the flow, Buddy sacked the band, but hired Mike, Mike said he was scared stiff, but managed to keep up with the man.recently i got a mint promo copy from states for $20 what a steal. This lp came out in 1956 i think, isent even mentioned on his website? Can anyone confirm release date, mike you usually tend to know everything, paul

  10. This afternoon played Song of the Yellow River, however many times it comes on, it still really hits me, what a great piece of music. Did two cds for my friend at work, los Ritmos Caliente, and Jazz Espagnole, after copying them he sends them to Mauritious, can you imagine hearing Cal and the boys out there. When i was in Maldives some years ago i had waterproof cd player playiny all Cals tunes under water while surrounded by shoals of mullet and angel fish, surreal experience, wheres the most unusual place you have heard Cal tjader?
  11. Mike, just got back on line. dont know this album, but i have two headed cd also, great isent it, especially El Marcel. Saw the man years ago at Brighton, swinging, so was the crowd. Listening to Tokyo Blues Horace Silver, doesnt rock like Cals version though.
  12. Thanks alot, paul, hopefully i can help you out sometime?
  13. jUST LISTENING TO dUSK fIRE, WHAT A SUPERB LP, REALLY HAUNTING, ANYONE NOT AWARE OF THIS SHOULD PICK IT ON CD, DOUBLE CD WITH SHADES oF bLUE, THE BEST RELEASE LAST YEAR IN MY OPINION, tANSAM fU REALLY KICKS IN A KIND OF ESOTERIC WAY? EBAY AT MOMENT GOING FOR £350, REALLY DONT MISS THIS ONE, PROBABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT LP IN bRITISH MODERN JAZZ, IMO?
  14. Just listening to Selim by Johnny Lyttle, really swings. when i used to play this when deejhaying the crowd would all go absolutely crazy. Everybody would get up to dance, what great memories. I swapped 28 lps to get original copy, i cradled it in my arms all the way home, at two in the morning. But another lp he did was really good, The Village caller on Riverside, a nice track called Pedro Strodder, bongoes playing against vibes, does anyone know this lp, worth picking it up in us, cheap?
  15. Mike could you possibly put Live and Direct original cover onto my Baryshnikov messages like you have, as just seeing my tag is boring/ Any cal Tjader cover i like Tjader plays mambo, as i dont know how to do this, do i need a camera?
  16. Pete your in luck, go to Artistes and my Sabu Martinez question, there is a link to Sabu lps for sale, dusty grooves america i think is the shop Sorcery for $9, what a piece of luck, hopefully this has made your day as you Americans say, paul, re-issue of course?
  17. Gary ,Gilles Pterson issued two awesome cds last year.Impressed volumes one and two. On volume one The Joe Harroit and Amancio Silva Quartet play Jaipur from the album Hum Dono, this lp is £150 if you can find it? These two cds are excellent, full of wondrous tunes that will really surprise you. Considering the years they were recorded they still sound fresh and have the ability to move you? Please buy both as given a few years time these will fetch at least £40 plus on ebay, the soul jazz compilations do. paul
  18. :mellow Thanks for that, but i dident understand, the bit about yelling, please explain, cheers Paul

    aFRO JAWS

:rolleye DOES ANYONE KNOW IF eDDIE LOCKJAW DAVIS MADE ANOTHER ALBUM WITH THE rAY bARRETTO LATIN SECTION SIMILAR TO aFRO-JAWS, WHICH IS GREAT?
  22. B-) Mike that cd is awesome, its considered to be the holy grail of latin record collectors? I sold mine years ago, now i could get £1,500 for my original black Alegre lp. Ring the guy up and reserve it, this cd might be the latest re-issue some of the tracks are missing? My album now is the Japanese re-issue cost £30 ten years ago, but the quality is excellent, also have quality cd, bought in London 5 years ago, cost £10. As far as i know there were only 500 copies pressed, as Mafia financed deal. Record fell flat, because music was not catering for Anglo- saxon market, it kicks, believe me. Pure latin musicians, enjoying themselves, great version os Nicas Dream, check thats not the track missing, i think it maybe? WOULD BE REALLY INTERESTED TO SEE WHAT YOU THINK OF IT, pAUL
  23. Mike thanks for the reply, just returned from work. A Mauritian friend of mine plays congas, i did him a cd of Cals modern mambo quintet, blew his mind, niceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee? He couldent believe the quality of the musicians, have just done Jazz Espagnole and Afro Jaws for him. He says all his friends come over have a few beers and probably some Jack Mcduff [puff], and they then try to emulate their heroes. They have a good little band apparrently, will sit in when his wife goes on holiday. Latin heaven?
  24. Can anyone tell me what the word Gem means after some tunes on Jazz Espagnole, presumably it is a latin rhythm? What a great album, gets me everytime, paul
  25. thanks , i will treat it as such, cheers Paul
