  1. Yes tubby Hayes could blow a mean sax, but his vibes werent bad either, check out Down in the Village, also lovely soprano in In the Night, unusual at that time apparrently, paul london
  2. In uk we have the best tv channel for quality programmes in the world, and Cals music is often used in background, in fact most of music is jazz, the guys doing it pick quite obscure tunes which always interests me. Am listening to Alegre all stars cooking up a storm with kako, great music, respects to all Tjader fans youve got the best t aste, there is a cd out at present featuring many film scores includind Evil Ways, is arriving soon so will let you know. Paul london
  3. I was lucky enough to meet Art Blakey and have a drink with him years ago at Ronnies Scotts, he was amazing, you only have to listen to Night in Tunisia to realise that. But i saw the Guvnor three times and it was a brilliant adrealin rush, and i met him afterwards, theres only one genius and thats M r Rich, no contest, paul london.
  4. She sang a greatversion of vera Cruz, but i cant remember which album its on, paul london ?
  5. This music was massive 15 years ago in london during the early years of Gilles Peterson, i remember paying £300 for Samblanca Trio, all brazillian stuff was really expensive, but used to always swing the jazz nights, excellent, especially Elis Regina, and Flora Purim, paul london
  6. In the night, on Down in the village, is a great modal tune, superb album, nice vibes too. Try Gilles Peterson Impressed one and two, the best in british jazz, inc Don Rendell, Ian carr, Tubby, Mike Westbrook, two fabulous cds, especially Dusk Fire, very deep and haunting, and Blue Mosque, beautiful , paul
  7. <_<Mike you being the doyen of tjader trivia, i wonder if you could answer this question for me . Apparrently a few years ago there was to be a tribute to cal in montreux, featuring bobby hutchertson, roy ayers, and several other masters of the vibe, any truth in this because i was going to go ?
  8. For me Night in Tunisia Art Blakey , Song for my Father, Leeway, Blue Train, and most of them, you always find something different in them depending what mood your in, thats the beauty in jazz, paul ?
  9. Its called Voodoo, as you said great tune, paul, london
  10. -_- Been a long time since i was here, just listening to shoshana on nu yorican soul, i think its a good version as a tribute to the man, also great track called Maw Latin Blues, check this cd out, really good bringing latin to the cross over crowd, who may not ever listen to such music, nice flute solo too, with the congas cooking in the background, lovely, hows you mike, la clave from across the pond, paul london anon
  11. i dident like Metheny at first, then i heard Still life Talking, have seen three times in london, great. he is just different from what most jazz heads are used to, but when it gets you wow? and Lyle Mays on Keyboards, brilliant. my favorites are Dream of the Return from still life talking and, first circle, from album of same name, stick with it its worth it Jazz Kat.
  12. There was a really hip group a few years ago in London called The Subterraneans. They released two tracks Taurus Woman, and a great version of Night in Tunisia, an unknown vibe player was on that date. He is Max Beasley, since made it big in both film and tv, here and in states. I had the privelege once of djingg with him at a great brazillian night, the place was rocking, he was a really nice guy. what made it good also was he was a big, big Cal Tjader fan, so we had plenty to talk about. An esoteric link ?

Tooter, i can copy my cd copy of Cleopatras Needle as i have sold all three copies i had, as they go for £150 plus here in uk. A Friend of mine was Ronnies secretary for years, but she is losing her marbles alas, My cd is a bootleg so quality is not brilliant, but the music is, let me know and i will post it free to you , paul
  14. stefan, you should be able to pick up late Late show track on cd. try cd universe. I recently got cd for a disabled friend, which features that track, ebay often has her lps there not hard to get, Paul from uk
  15. Rob, lovely to here from you. My name is Paul Tjader, no relative of course, but i have been promoting your dads music for years here in the uk. I changed my name to yours because everybody used to call me tjader during the heady days of the london jazz scene. I hope you dont mind that a crazy Englishman has your surname, it was not intended to offend.I will play Tokyo Blues from several Shades Of Jade, a great big band tune with the tightness of a small combo. I recently gave two cds of your dads to a friend in Mauritius, they love it apparrently? So Cals music spans the globe, as well it should. keep in touch, welcome to the board, paul
  16. Thanks Chuck, after all these years i know a little more, cheers paul
  17. Can anyone please give me some more information on Emarcy pressing of Buddy Rich's lp The Driver. what year it came out and if the promo, was issued or not? Its one of my favorites and still takes me back to 1982, when i first heard it. I still get that buzz, you know the one i mean when he blows those drums apart. This lp is not even mentioned on his discography, although a copy was pressed on the Phillips label, thanks i know someone out there will know something, paul in the uk.
  18. Have just managed to get a copy of shearing in Hi fi, very early lp featuring cal on vibes. Was year of release 1951 or 1952 or 1953, A peraza features on last track called Drume Negrita, a taste of things to follow, but he is not listed on record cover? been away for few weeks, but still playing my latin jazz. Paul
  19. Easy to purchase anywhere, great cds, you have good taste, paul uk
  20. When people who dont like jazz say its like supermarket music, i couldent agree more. here in uk jazz fm plays it, all the true jazz fans have turned off long ago. Its without passion and fire, its so boring it could watch paint dry, absolutely awful bland rubbish, please eradicate it from uk airwaves, lets h earsome great jazz, theres plenty to go round, Paul Uk
  21. Can anyone tell me why Buddy's album The driver was never reissued on cd format? I have a mint promo copy and would never sell it, as it is such a great lp. Many have offered, but its the main reason why i was turned onto jazz, does anyone else rate this small combo piece?
  22. Mike, was listening to Colorado Waltz yesterday, hadent really heard it in the right frame of mind, i thought what a great little number. Armando Peraza really lets loose and creates some excitement, do you like this number? paul
  23. Has it ever been issued on cd? Marcello you have good taste, a talent in short supply these days, Paul
  24. Another often overlooked album is Herbie mann's Monday night at the Village gate. , which features a great line up, Dave Pike, Chick Corea, Carlos Patato Valdez, full on latin, with the live audience getting right into it. I love the tune by Atilla zoller, In Escambrun, swings along taking all and sundry with it. does anyone rate this nice little lp,paul from London
  25. Will try new album as you kindly suggested. I was very lucky recently, as i have had three copies of Manhattan latin, idearly wanted another one in good condition. CD is good though, but a friend said he had a copy to sell in mint condition [promo] for £30. I thought it must be worn a little, but i was amazed when i looked at it, absolutely mint and promo too, came from radio station in states. so i quickly jumped on it,as you rarely find records in that condition, and it costs £150 here, niceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
