  1. I can appreciate both sides on this, but I'm inclined to agree with Mike (VERY well stated, Mike). BTW, that's two people now that were thinking Zoot... ! Okay- that's IT, I'd better shut up.
  2. Wow- I've been waiting for a CD version of this for a LONG time. Thanks for the heads up, vibes
  3. Kenny Burrell - Have Yourself A Soulful Christmas Vince Guaraldi - Charlie Brown Christmas Ron Eschete - Christmas Impressions All i can think of right now...
  4. VERY cool idea, Mr. Gould.
  5. I would have to go with "Classic"... ... Bossa Nova, 1958 - 1965-ish B)
  6. ... and they're BASTARDS!
  7. Hmmm.... Yeah, just "Hmmm". I'll have to leave it at that!

Hi Bob, One of your PM's DID get through, but I haven't been able to get a reply to go through. ======== Edit: Bob, I recieved your latest PM, letting me know that mine did reach you after all. Very good then- I hope you are able to get in touch with Eddie and purchase something from him. You won't be disappointed.
  10. I just wanted to jump in and say that I have no problem at all with this. Sure, I'd love it if everybody dug every track, but I'm more realistic than that, and as long as it's sincere and honest and not nasty (no reason to expect that from anybody, as I currently have no running feuds with anyone ), it's cool. So, by all means be critical of what you don't like. I actually agree with some of the specific criticisms, believe it or not. The flipside of this might be that I hope I can feel free to challenge some of the negative comments if I feel they're not completely well-founded in my opinion. I think some of my comments in this regard will have to do with the guitarists, because that's one area where I feel I'm qualified to say I've had more experience than most jazz fans. I think I might be able to share some knowledge in this area that could help some folks out in terms of appreciating jazz guitarists in general. More on this later... I'm going to try to jot down some topics for discussion in a word-processing document that I'm saving for later. Oh- I'm still having a blast reading everyone's comments. I hope that everybody that received a disc will post something, even if they feel too stumped to comment on every track. Please don't be shy about making any sort of comments that come to mind. Participation is what makes this whole thing worthwhile! Thanks- Jim
  11. here's a link to a review of his latest hazletine review Thanks Montg. I'll check it out.
  12. Okay, maybe I'm being too logical about this but... if you chose the LAST (i.e. most recent) RVG session for BN, that would mean you would have lived long enough to at least hear all of them (if not attend them). So, if you chose that 1953 Gil Melle session (or whatever RVG's first session was), then you would be SIX FEET UNDER before 99.993% of all of his classic sessions had been recorded. Elementary, my dear Watson.
  13. Bol, Eddie is more the restrained/elegant type. I'm sure you would dig him, since you like Charlap. Eddie is much older than Charlap, and is very versatile in terms of styles and repertoire, but his Venus CD's are very elegant and tasty like Charlap's. Please take a look at Eddie's online discography- it's really excellent. There's a link to it provided in this thread: Eddie Higgins thread
  14. Labels, and recording dates(to go along with the previous post): 1991, 1993- Along With Me- Chiaroscuro 1993-05-05- Bill Charlap & Sean Smith- Progressive 1995- Bill Charlap / Michael Moore (Concord Duo Series, Vol. 9)- Concord 1995-06-19- Souvenir- Criss Cross 1996-06-06- The Gerry Mulligan Songbook- Chiaroscuro 1996-12-17- Distant Star- Criss Cross 1997-12-22- All Through The Night- Criss Cross 1998-12-26- S'Wonderful- Venus 2000-03- Written In The Stars- Blue Note 2001-06-07- Blues In The Night- Venus 2002- Stardust- Blue Note 2002-04-03, 04- The Things We Did Last Summer- Venus 2003-04-07- Love You Madly- Venus
  15. Yeah... Fred Wesley... I think maybe this guy forgot to bring his reading glasses to the gig.
  16. Maybe he had... ... on his mind.
  17. I have dug this album ever since I found a sealed copy at the Marin City flea market back in the early 80's. I think I scored copies of SOLID and MATADOR on the same day... that was a good day. I too like this the best of the 3 aforementioned Green/Young/Jones collaberations. It's simultaneously laid back AND intense. Intensely melodic, and intense sound-wise. I love to play this LOUD. Grant was having a good day tone-wise, and the sound of these instruments together is just special. In fact, even if I overlook the pretty melodies they tackled, the interplay, and the improvisational ideas that took place, I still just love this recording for the blending of these instruments as played by these particular players. Organ and guitar (and drums) always have a good sound together, and the vibes really add a nice flavor.

Relatively speaking, of course. I think $20 would still deter a lot of potential buyers, but it's a hell of a lot better than ordering from Japan for $30-$35. I'm interested in a number of Venus artists and titles, but even at $20 it's a bit discouraging for an avid jazz fan (and CD buyer) to think about collecting a lot of things from their catalog. I've bought a few Eddie Higgins CD's directly through Eddie for $15... maybe I should think about trying to contact Charlap and eliminate the middleman.
  19. I have about 30, with a mixture of veterans and younger players, from the 1980's to the present. I've rarely been disappointed with a CC title. That website is really set up nice. It's easy to link to different titles that a given sideman appears on, see how many standards vs original tunes a CD has, find things numerically or by artist... The artist index is a great way to get an overview of the label. A few favorites: Jimmy Raney- Wisteria Clifford Jordan- Royal Ballads Cedar Walton- Manhattan Afternoon Peter Leitch- On A Misty Night Mel Rhyne- Mel's Spell Bill Charlap- All Through The Night Steve Davis- Systems Blue Sam Yahel- Trio Ryan Kisor- Battle Cry There are a lot of artists on the label that I've yet to really explore. I've been meaning to pick up something by David Hazeltine, for example. I would own a lot more CC titles if not for the fact that they've always been a tad expensive.

I agree- I'd like to see something on a U.S. label. I don't know what his contract status is in terms of other labels, but he's been recording for Venus (Japan) as part of the NEW YORK TRIO. Take a look at this thread: NY Trio on Venus
  21. Yeah, it's original- I bought it in '66. It's an unpeeled mono with clear evidence of Ringo's collar on the right side. The site where I just found the above image stated that unpeeled versions are getting more and more scarce, due to all the peeling that's gone on over the years. I've always been too afraid to try to peel it anyway.
  22. Anybody know what a copy of YESTERDAY AND TODAY (original, unpeeled with the butcher cover underneath) is going for these days? I wonder if I held onto it too long... like my Nolan Ryan rookie card...
  23. Ray, that's it- you're banned. No, no... actually, that was very well put, and not only am I not offended, I'm glad you said it. I basically said the same thing to Dan in a recent e-mail. My tastes in jazz definitely are more conservative than most, and I do love melody (perhaps to a fault). So yeah, Dan's and my tests don't overlap much, and there's *still* plenty of ground to cover in future tests. Pretty cool. B) As long as I'm posting, I might as well add that this is not only a blast for me, but I'm learning too. It's great to have one's fellow music lovers analyze what you dig (even if they don't hit the nail on the head every time), because it both reinforces what you knew as well as presenting new angles that you hadn't even thought about. Many of these tracks are long time favorites of mine (either the tune, the artist, or both), with only a few tracks added more for the sake of "let's see if anybody can figure these out" (#'s 8, 9, and 12 are in that category).
  24. Yeah Tony, and I'm also stoked by the new avatar. Hopefully you'll be updating it for us periodically?
