Wow, I never knew that. Just for a few weeks, as I understand it.

Sam Rivers - The Tuba Trio, Vol. III (Circle), which was actually from the first set that night at the Bimhuis, and the Sam Rivers side of Flutes (Circle), which I think was from the same set, based on the liner notes from The Tuba Trio.

I keep hoping some airchecks will show up of the 1943 Earl Hines big band, when both Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker were on board. Damn recording ban! The Monk Quintet with Steve Lacy (there are airchecks, but I would have loved to have a studio album by this group). Heck, we barely got the Monk/Coltrane/Ware/Wilson quartet. The Tuxedo Brass Band with Louis Armstrong among the cornets. The early-1960's Ornette Coleman Quartet with Bobby Bradford. The Miles Davis Sextet with both Wayne Shorter and Joe Henderson on tenor. Buddy Petit!

The Memphis Maybe Man (Doc Cook with Freddie Keppard) Maybe Baby (Buddy Holly) Oh Baby! Maybe Someday (Duke Ellington) Maybe I'm Amazed (Paul McCartney) Maybe It's Because (Frank Sinatra) Next up: BECAUSE (or 'CAUSE)

This band might be surprised by the Mama Too Tight comparison, but you are otherwise on the right track. I like them a lot, but I knew that most folks wouldn't like everything on this BFT.

A Happy New Year to all my Organissimo friends!
jeffcrom replied to mjzee's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Congrats, but you should have asked your wife to hold off for another 22 minutes so you could make the news for first baby of 2012. No, she did good - 2011 tax deduction! -
Wouldn't there be a possibility for another Mosaic Select, collecting all the Impulse trio material? Seems only Yale has appeared completely (on the "Trio Live" CD which I'm spinning right now). The complete 1973 Molde, Norway concert is also on Trio Live.

Although it does somewhat resemble Mr. Mandel's tune, it's not "The Shadow of Your Smile." And not Bob Wilber or Kenny Davern. I'm restraining myself from saying more yet.

Happy New Year to all, congrats to ...impossible, and thanks to Jim for putting up with us. -
I've got to give this to you - it is indeed Muggsy Spanier on cornet. Not a Ted Lewis recording, as you recognized. I don't think this brief episode in Muggsy's career is well known. Not a Waller recording - your instincts were right. Pretty good speculation about the recording date. I like to include something from my 78 collection on these blindfold tests, and this is it for this BFT. It's a slightly obscure recording, although I recently became aware that it has been reissued on CD.

Yes and no, about the tune. Miles apparently "borrowed" the tune that Jackie McLean called "Donna" - our tenor player on track 1 calls it "Donna" on his album and credits it to McLean. Later: I just checked the album, and Miles gets the composer credit, although it is called "Donna." If I was hearing this for the first time, I think I would have guessed that the tenorist was from Chicago, too, but he's not. His home is quite a distance from the Windy City.

Welcome in the new year by commenting on BFT 94 here. I'm more interested in discussion and opinions than identifying tracks (although that can be fun, too).

Watching ten or so minutes of the mainstream pop culture festivities on television at midnight was so bizarre that I needed something real to experience before going to bed. So like Leeway recently, I spun: Sam Rivers - Hues (Impulse) Almost half of this album has been reissued in more complete form on the Trio Live CD. But the rest hasn't, including the only six released minutes of the fabulous Rivers/Richard Davis/Warren Smith trio. Here's hoping that the 1971 Boston concert and the 1972 Rochester, Minnesota show will be issued in full one of these days.

Gene Roland - Swingin' Friends (Brunswick stereo) Some pretty good friends on this one.
-
Spun a few of the 78s I picked up in Vancouver this week: Duke Ellington - Drop Me Off in Harlem/Clarinet Lament (English Parlophone) Duke Ellington - Clementine/Five O'Clock Drag (Canadian HMV/Victor) Charlie Barnet - You Were There/Mother Fuzzy (Canadian Bluebird) plus a couple of related American records already in my collection: Duke Ellington - Solitude/Moonglow (Silvertone) [sears' label] Charlie Barnet - Knockin' at the Famous Door/Tin Roof Blues (Bluebird) "Tin Roof" is a Benny Carter arrangement.

Every blindfold test presenter has a different "philosophy," but to me, an interesting discussion of the music has more value than counting how many tracks you can identify. I hope that there's some music here that folks like and want to discuss.

And I find some pretty interesting old threads by accident while searching for something specific.

Here is the link for BFT 94. I encourage anyone who is interested to give it a listen, even if you haven't signed up. I'll start a discussion thread on January 1.

Seattle Beat (Capitol Custom). Picked this up in Washington earlier this week - it's a 1962 collection of Seattle jazz. Much of it is pretty bad (when I die and go to Hell I expect Myron Hinkle & the Blue Banjo Boys' version of "Goofus" to be playing continuously on the sound system), but there are two tracks by Corky Corcoran, a Hawkins-influenced tenor player I've always liked. And there are a couple of good cuts by Chuck Mahaffay & The Individuals. Mahaffay played drums and clarinet; Larry Coryell was in The Individuals a couple of years later, but there's no guitar on these tunes.

That's the one I've got (LP version), and here's the cover: Looking for it, I just found another cover... listed on Paris Jazz Corner with the following info: But then the question that just arose: Jeff - or anyone else - any clue as to who the guitar player is, then, if it's not Danny Barker? I have no idea and don't know if anyone else does at this point.

Stan Kenton Live: any recommendations please?
jeffcrom replied to RiRiIII's topic in Recommendations
This one is by the 1952-53 band others have mentioned. Sound quality varies from track to track: Concert in Miniature Broadcasts 1952-1953 (Artistry) I like this 1973 concert a lot: Birthday in Britain (Creative World) -
That was a great show.

Final selections have been made, and it should be a pretty interesting program. As threatened promised, there is rapping on one selection - a BFT first, maybe? I'll send the link out on December 31 or January 1. Hot Ptah, your disc will go out today or tomorrow.
