  1. You're lucky to have it. A bit too pricey for me. I didn't pay full price. Still wasn't cheap, but enough below retail that I couldn't resist. And I'm glad; I've really enjoyed this set in the six months or so that I've had it.
  2. New York Art Quartet - Call It Art (Triple Point); record five.
  3. I have some of Jazzology Paramount issues, but as I've said before here, I wish Jazzology would issue the Paramount stuff in some sort of coherent, logical fashion. Except for a few issues, it's all piecemeal anthologies and series they start but never finish.
  4. I saw a sealed copy of this one in a local store for $17. If you still want it, I'll pick it up tomorrow and send it for cost with shipping. Lemme know.
  5. Rosenkrantz Guildenstern Jerry Garcia
  6. Well, of course I had heard some of the tracks before - a couple are on my shelves. That's what I get for waiting to the last minute and not leaving time to digest the music. Anyway, once again, great stuff.
  7. Where did this month go? I can't believe that I waited until the last day to listen to this excellent BFT. This is pretty rare - I liked every track, and liked most of them a lot. The powerful opening track put me in a good place to really enjoy the whole thing. Unfortunately, waiting until the last minute means that I don't really have time to do it justice. It's a busy day, and it's not over. I don't even have time to read the rest of this thread right now. I don't think that I've heard any of these tracks before, though, and although I think I recognize a few musicians, the only "official" guess I'm going to make is Byard Lancaster on the South American folk song/Simon & Garfunkel song. And I'm probably wrong about that. Really enjoyed the music, though, and I'm looking forward to finding out more about it.
  8. I always loved this quote from Evan Eisenberg's The Recording Angel, a book I reread every few years. Eisenberg says that Jerry Wexler, "took Aretha Franklin from hapless Columbia, set her down in a Muscle Shoals studio, and tossed her 'I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)' as one tosses a lighted match at petroleum."
  9. Frank Lowe Orchestra - Lowe & Behold (Musicworks). Mr. Lowe is being discussed and played around here, which prompted me to dig out this 1977 rarity. It's maybe less than the sum of its parts, but well worth spinning every once in a while.
  10. Ben Webster - Did You Call? (Nessa). A gift from a friend.
  11. Jon has not one, not two, not three, but four separate and distinct birthday threads! And I suspect that he deserves them all. I chose the most recently-begun to say: Happy Birthday, Noj!
  12. Tony Scott featuring Jan Akkerman - Prism (Dutch Polydor)
  13. This morning: Thelonious Alone in San Francisco - a beautiful thing.
  14. Rosemary Clooney - Love (Reprise stereo). I'm very suggestible.
  15. Hmmm.... That's the first place I checked. I'll try again, and search some different ways. Okay - found it. Their search engine is a little eccentric until you get used to it.
  16. Hmmm.... That's the first place I checked. I'll try again, and search some different ways.
  17. Chick Corea - Trio Music (ECM). I don't like everything by Corea, but I like the first, mostly improvised disc of this album.
  18. Anybody have any idea how to actually buy this CD? I really enjoyed hearing this group in Columbia, SC, and would like to buy a copy, but I can't find it anywhere.
  19. Clark Terry's In Orbit, from the Monk Complete Riverside box.
  20. Anthony Braxton - 9 Compositions (Iridium) 2006 (Firehouse 12). Disc four.
  21. I love that version of "Good Bait" as an example of the difference between swing and bop. It's straight swing until the first bridge, when Dizzy takes it to pure bebop territory. Except when they don't. I went to play my Billy Eckstine big band Nationals this morning, only to find that the best one, "Cool Breeze," was broken. No idea how it happened, but it kind of hurt. And thanks for starting this thread; as you can see, I've enjoyed it.
  22. Lots of 78s recently. Yesterday it was Mel Powell's Commodore session (the first under his name). I enjoyed Benny Goodman's playing so much on this session that I then spent 40 minutes or so playing Goodman red-label Columbias. The winners were the 1940 big band version of "Henderson Stomp" and three sides by the Sextet with Charlie Christian.
  23. A masterpiece. Back in the day, I made a cassette with each of the QRS sides followed immediately by the 1970 version of the same tune. I think I'll create an iTunes playlist with the same setup.
  24. What a great man and great musician, and what a great life. So long, Mr. Terry.

It's called Blossoms. Can't find the website. Thanks, I found information about the single disc on the Senators site. Maybe the box set never came into fruition. I thought I saw a photo of it once, but perhaps I made that up. I'm also thinking that the box set probably never happened. It took me forever to find the single disc of Leaves/Blossoms; I finally bought a copy from Martin Davidson, who was distributing it for a while.
