  1. What I'd like to know is what they sound like when playd quad. Any experiences? I have some 70's impulses that boast about it, but I've never had the chance to test that s**t out.
  2. The reissue of the long sold out (about 50 copies were made) CD-r is finally out in a proper format. Some killer Finnish free jazz on the loose here. Official promo: "I'm going to call this 'Rural Jazz". Just sue me if you think I'm wrong. But hey, this IS backwoods stuff, men of the deep forest, barefooted, whirling in their longjohns like at some crazy afterparty of the county fair. Moonshine troubadours. No cool jazz-poses here, oh no, sir. I bet they couldn't do that even if they tried (well, i know that for a fact.). But these boys know what they're doing, don't get me wrong on that. It goes where it's supposed to go. What always struck me as their greatest quality was that it never got ugly. You know, this 'free jazz'-thing, too often it's just downright UGLY, like watching endless repeats of Ultimate Fighter, all tight, sweaty muscles and low-brows, 'I'LL TAKE YOU DOWN, BOY!!'. None of it here, no sir. And that doesn't mean that it's lacking something, quite the contrary. The power is elsewhere, the power is in the union. Goddamn fieldworkers, really. Everyone knows their place in the chain, reap and sow, divide and conquer...and there's Laurel & Hardy too. It's serious stuff but not a matter of life/death. There's a calm inside the storm, always. An orchestra of Peace. So PEACE, brothers, can't wait to see you again. Tyrone D.C. Washington, Helsinki, Finland, 29.08.2010" A snippet can be heard on Soundcloud. Copies can be bought from Discogs, staalplaat, Levykauppa-x, Volcanic Tongue or directly from us. Thanks!
  3. I love it when you guys post images, more please.
  4. I don't think the us pressings had black labels, they had green just as the german ones, just a bit darker hue. The black labels are more recent issues, from the late 80's to 90's.
  5. 1€ 4€ original, but not in the best condition 3€
  6. Which Mengelberg/Bennink duo do you have? I have a few ICPs at this point (002, 003, 007/008, 009, 011, 020, 022). With my crappy income, I've had to prioritize on what I spend money, but eventually I'd like a set of all of the early ICP LPs. An original (handmade cover) of New Acoustic Swing Duo and the low-fi flexi discs (ICP 013) are likely out of my financial reach, but the former was reissued a couple of times. Those will be the ones I can afford. Yeah, I love those ICPs. Great music. I still need a copy of Groupcomposing too. Even if the music does not live up to the hype of the lineup, it is still a great cover: The duo was ICP 010, this Instant Composers Pool.
  7. lucky devil, I've been looking for that for quite some time. Most of those ICP's are really, really, good. I've only got the New Acoustic Swing duo, Mengelberg/Bennink duo, and Lijm by Bennink/Bailey, which I finally acquired recently. right at this very instant, I'm listening to Nursery Cryme by Genesis. It's been 10 years since the last spin.
  8. Great to hear! I recorded that first side with my "portable" cassette deck, and the music is excellent, even if the recording is a bit ... "unprofessional".
  9. Taco Bells: Vadelma / Hawaii John Russell/Toshinori Kondo/Roger Turner: Artless Sky Charlie Mingus: Blue Bird (America)
  10. Another one going even higher; $2,616 Hank Mobley Insane, especially for a VG+ (or more likely, VG) copy. Yeah, especially since you can get the new Music Matters 45rpm 12"s for $50 and they'll sound better and look better (nice gatefold). Good album though. No reissue has ever, will ever, look better than the originals. Period. You can argue about the sound, true, but not the printjobs, textures, cardboard quality, colors. No. Being a gatefold makes no difference. But yes, 2k is a bit much even for an original.
  11. Bringing back an old topic, but I just got my copy of this, and I'm not really sure do I like or not. It seems to have (at a quick glance) quite a few errors (Ian Carr the guitarist, confusing Jimmy Garrison and Rashied Ali, having many release dates totally incorrect, claiming Like Someone in Love by Blakey (released over five years after recording) to be one of his most admired and a record that showed the way for future (obviously really talking about A Night in Tunisia, recorded in the same sessions) etc. These errors, even if small, make me doubt every detail in the book, and that's not a good starting point. Also, a jazz cover book without ONE Peter Brötzmann cover is a bad joke. This is weird considering it does have some obscure Romanian covers, a lot of MPS covers etc. Might be copyright issue, I don't know. So, disappointment it is, but how big, I have to figure out with further readings.
  12. Great cover of a compilation LP by this Finnish singer/songwriter/rocker Kari Peitsamo. It just shows the covers of all of his previous records. front: back:

  14. The Great Ebay Con http://jazzcollector.com/?s=Nautiluso
  15. I only have Fuego, and I love it, even if it gets bashed in the Penguin guide.
  16. It figures, god damn cheapskate record clubs. But thanks for the info!
  17. Funny that this thread should reappear right now, since I have a question to ask: What's the story with the Capitol-versions of the orange/black-issues? I've lately received two of these from eBay, both of the time thinking I was getting the read deal. The main difference in these is the ugly non-laminated sleeves, which rob a lot of the appeal of the original Impulse-sleeves. They still have the original labels, but with SMAS prefix, instead of AS, and with manufactured by Capitol Records text. The two I've seen are Spellbinder by Gabor Szabo and Live at the Village Vanguard, Again! by John Coltrane. Why were these issued?
  18. I think it was only out in Japan briefly a few years ago. Yes, I know about the Japanese reissue, but that's just a band-aid, what really should be done, is a proper ECM-reissue. The photos I posted didn't show, so here's in writing the whole list: Music Improvisation Company Derek Bailey & Dave Holland: Improvisations for Cello and Guitar Paul Bley: Ballads Also, I don't know if this anymore available: Edward Vesala: Nan Madol And I have all these on vinyl, so in that sense I con't care, but I'm just disliking ECM that much more for not reissuing properly such relevant records. Nan Madol used to be available on CD, but I think it's long sold out.
  19. I have very little good to say about ECM, so I won't say much, but where are reissues of these: Music Improvisation Company Derek Bailey & Dave Holland: Improvisations for Cello and Guitar Paul Bley: Ballads Especially that Music Improvisation Company record is absolutely essential. Also, I don't know if this anymore available: Edward Vesala: Nan Madol Bloody well should be.
  20. I would add Paul Rutherford and Derek Bailey to that list.
  21. That is sad news indeed. While reading this, I can hear his sound on Baptised Traveller in my head. What a full, round, warm yet strong sound that is. And how about Amalgam's Prayer for Peace? Phenomenal. With Dave Holland and Barry Guy, one of the best British.
  22. This has been out for a while. Exploding free jazz from Finland. A pressing of 300 copies. Listen to it here: http://www.myspace.com/tyyfus Order it from here: http://www.tyyfus.com Or from me directly. Thanks!
  23. Gots to be some golden flour there, then. Welcome to the board! Thanks!!! It's nice to be here, since it seems that this is finally a jazz-site that covers the whole spectrum. About that Taylor record, I'm just wondering what have the expenses been on a record that get's the price tag of 110$? I've released LP's with my mates, and the highest fee for manufacturing is 8€ (about 12$) per copy. Double that, and you're selling for 16€, triple it, and it's still only 23€ (34$). This bothers me mainly because I would've really liked to buy that Taylor/Oxley-album, both artists being in my list of favorites.
