  1. Now that I have the Mosaic box and listened to the "Catch Me" sessions repeatedly, I can't think of any other pianist but Fischer in 1963 in California who played like this.
  2. Can't say - probably the one most recently purchased. After that I return to any of them equally often.
  3. Engineering on the Kirk was done by Paul Goodman - totally different from the tinny sound of his work for Prestige in the 1960's. Kevin, thanks for the info about CDJapan, It's only that I get 5% discount from JPC and never pay for postage. And I try to buy less CDs ...
  4. Still listening through the Pass set - I'm not that much of a guitar fan, but enjoying this one from a to z, which says a lot. I had been hesitating and re-considering for so long, but now I'm glad I got it.
  5. I ordered from JPC, who sell them for € 15,99 a piece.
  6. The mailman just brought the Joe Pass box sent by Jazz Messengers - who use so much Scotch tape you hardly know where to start pulling or cutting. The set's number is # 4607 - and I don't regret pulling the trigger. Early Pass always catches my ear.
  7. Just ordered a copy of the SHM issue of Memphis Underground. Tom Dowd's recordings always had a lot of tape hiss, and in most cases when engineers try to reduce that the results are awful. It's no wonder the Kirk sounds great in the remaster - "New Process CSG Stereo" - whatever that was.
  8. A search in Lord shows an occasional track or two on an album where she herself plays piano, much less often than you might think, found about a dozen tracks spread over all of her career. This 1973 album on Victor Japan, however, should be what you are looking for: https://www.discogs.com/Carmen-McRae-As-Time-Goes-By-Carmen-McRae-Alone-Live-At-The-Dug/master/561773
  9. More glorious mono:
  10. My copy, btw, includes a track with the Basie orchestra, "Let Me Dream", of which the booklet of the Base Clef/Verve Mosaic box set says it was excluded from the record, just mentioned on the back cover! It's audibly there.
  11. Original Fantasy 10" on green vinyl
  12. More McFarland in glorious mono:
  13. More glorious Verve mono: Surprise find in a Frankfurt 2nd hand shop a few months ago.
  14. Glorious sound from this original Verve mono copy.
  15. Haven't pulled the Mobley set from the shelf in quite a while - grooving along on Saturday while the neighbours are out!
  16. Thanks much - this is better reading than all the speculation going on here during the last weeks. I think I will get me one Mosaic set every month instead of other releases until I have all I really want, that is the JPJ, Jamal, and Turrentine sets. Perhaps the Young Basie, too, although I have most of it on other discs.
  17. At last, a comprehensive survey of his harpsichord pieces, on adequately sounding German model harpsichords. Astronio's playing is up tp the often high technical demands of the pieces, inspired and flexible, with the necessary masculine touch this music needs. The composer's unique position and conception between his father's music and galant inluences comes across more clearly than on any previous recording.
  18. What puzzles me is that I cannot find this box set on ENJA's website or at German jazz mailorder shops ... p.s. Found it - they just didn't index it under the musicians' names ....
  19. Got this one today and played some of it in the car - good sound and music, but I'm afraid this will not spare me looking for the expanded versions of the Forbidden Fruit and Sings Ellington albums ,,,,
  20. Maybe the Benedetti Parker set sold not enough copies anymore per year to justify a reprint - that's what any label would consider.
  21. Yes indeed - at home my wife never would listen to music with me for so many hours ... ... but she really likes Nina Simone. That said, I just ordered another box with five of her Colpix albums.
