Why not Hogwood? Found him more charming than Pinnock, and more complete.

Nice cake! Happy Birthday!

This morning's wake up call:
-
Sorry, that youtube file won't play in Germany - restrictions from GEMA. What I can hear on samples of two tracks on amazon sounds like left on organ and right hand on piano, not necessarily overdubbed.

There were corresponding releases with different material by Poindexter and Pauer on MPS or its sub-label, Session - the music on these is very good. https://www.discogs.com/Pony-Poindexter-The-Happy-Life-Of-Pony/master/1112082 https://www.discogs.com/Fritz-Pauer-Jimmy-Woode-Erich-Bachträgl-Power-By-Pauer-Live-At-The-Domicile/release/3192261 There were corresponding releases with different material by Poindexter and Pauer on MPS or its sub-label, Session - the music on these is very good.

Background music while potting plants on the balcony on this nice spring sunday:

There are no bongos audible on that album! (Record labels have always been ultimately inaccurate in crediting percussionists,) Have you listened to the album to verify that organ and piano are both played at the same time? (I do not want to be picky, but my discographical work taught me to always listen to the music before stating anything like this.)

Whole batch of Mosaic Selects and Singles running low
mikeweil replied to miles65's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Jazz Messengers still has it in stock, it ssems, but I wouldn't wait too long if I wanted a copy ... -
The sound is stunningly good, she swings, her sidemen too - this is the real Diana Krall: A great singer of the standard repertoire, perhaps the best around, IMHO.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

Such magnificent music, warmth and power. I'm really glad I have this set. -

I do not know any modern classical theme reminiscent of Wilson's "Theme" - seems to be his own. He sure was capable of writiing such melodies. Deserves to become a standard! Finally found an affordable copy from a Korean seller on discogs. I cross my fingers. Can anybody re-post the link to the Wardell Grey website, please? The link was lost during somebBoard software update.

For me, Alphonze Mouzon almost spoils this album with his unimaginative disco beat bass drum.
-
The remastering of all albums in the box is excellent. I made comparisons with several earlier issues of a few albums, and the sound of the box always was top.

Pulled these from the mailbox as I returned from work: I could kick myself for waiting so long to get me a copy of this magnificent music! Awesome. The last session from those in the Mosaic box that I wanted - the later stuff doesn't interest me. I can do without Dizzy's more "commercial" small group sides (and vocals), though I like Lalo Schifrin's piano very much. The liner of this release cites Scott Yanow (allmusic) who totally misunderstands this session, IMO.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

Bebop? He plays a Parker tune, but not boppishly - when I listen to the early quintet sides, there are tunes that are stylistically bebop, but he never plays typical bop piano - he listened to all the cats but was wise to never imitate them. He never swung his phrases like Bud or Hampton Hawes, his rhythm was different, a bit wilder. -

That's great - his beat is as strong as that of the old stride pianists, in his own, very personal way. Shearing had an enormous palette, knew much more classical music than every other jazz pianist, I think. Your friend Dick Katz has a lot of good things to say about Shearing in his notes to the Mosaic box. Oh, and I love his humour, the announcements and the musical side. -

A great reminder for all those who didn't already know that Shearing was a great musician. But being aware that he was being recorded, he played it a bit safer than the exuberant Newport performance recorded a few months before the earliest session in this box set. -
Hey Kids, Have You Heard The News? MOSAIC's IN TROUBLE!!!
mikeweil replied to JSngry's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
All this certainly sharpened our awareness that Mosaic might not be around forever and urged us to shift our spendings towards their catalogue - at least that's what I decided. I got the Hines, the Pass is under way, andI will get the others I want, one every month, instead of buying CDs from other sellers. On the top of my list are Jamal, Turrentine, JPJ, and Young/Basie.
