What Classical Music Are You Listening To?
mikeweil replied to StarThrower's topic in Classical Discussion
This series of German SWR (South West Radio) is being sold at low prices at the moment - the label clears its stock. This specific one was not among them but is nonetheless fascinating, the orchestra premiered many recordings of Koechlin's unique works. https://www.jpc.de/s/Lagerräumung+SWRmusic?searchtype=campaigntext&rubric=classic -
Belated best wishes from the old world, too!

Ah - I suspected something like this.

Happened to put this into the player for breakfast this morning. I like that it was not just a compilation but all conceived and arranged for this disc by Don Sickler, who did a great job.

That's how my copy looks like. Not that rare. Solo harp, a rather tranquil outing. Check discogs for a used copy.

Beautiful music from one of my favourite French composers. -
Try to imagine her playing on guitar - her phrasing is edgier, as swinging phrasing is so much harder to do on harp. There are two reissues of her first LPs, one 4 CD box on Avid with five tracks of her fifth LP as a bonus. But there is a 3 CD box on Fresh Sound with all five LPs complete with better annotation:

Those links do not seem to work anymore - all I can find is her YouTube video:

Reading that comparison to Kenny Burrell I wrote almost ten years ago strikes me - I dug out a needle drop of her Atlantic LP The Fantastic Jazz Harp Of Dorothy Ashby yesterday and keep spinning it all the time; the opener, Flighty, is a simple blues tune that , it occured to me, sounds a lot like something - you guessed it - Kenny Burrell would have done. Richard Davis and Grady Tate are brilliant supporters - to my delight this was recently reissued on vinyl and CD by Spellbound, so grab a copy of this excellent record while it is available.

not tragic, just careless. i'd wear white gloves etc. in such a situation. pretty dumb.

I'm in too, now. When are we going to hear the session with Harvey Mason? -
This one looks interesting but used copies are available only at rather high prices:

Ronnie Scott's weirdest departure was finding himself on a Soft Machine session.

I bu,y at least one new jazz Christmas CD every season, but this year it was three: I had sold this but now felt the urge to listen to it once more .. Will open this one on Christmas eve. This one turns out to be a compilation of many chestnuts - my wife loves it. Today in the car I spinned one of my favourites to get me in the mood, masterful vocals by Mrs. Baker. Ironically, her jazziest album.

There is a Noah Howard LP from 1977 with Kenny Clarke on drums! One more example for that open minded Paisian scene. Plastic Dreams, recorded for Atlantic after the two Apple LPs, is similar as it uses echoplex on one track and various funk tinged grooves delivered by Heath and Kay in an elegant Rolls Royce attitude. John Lewis had a very open mind. He comps like a James Brown horn section on that album.

AFAIK, yes - Japan, Collectables, Rhino ...

I was very much excited about this when I heard of this release but I am a bit underwhelmed - I do not like the sound of the room, a small church whose naked raw stone wall acoustic has a very short reverb time which kind of doubles the sound of each string plucked. I like the harpsichord, which shows that French builders of the time where up to par with the Flemish. Delage is one to watch, I am sure he will be one of the most important harpsichord players in years to come; not all of his takes on these well-known pieces do convince me, he sounds a bit rushed in some, although this suits his view of Couperin's second book as voluptuous music emphasizing sound over structure very well. I just wish the recording would have a more intimate sound, this here sounds a bit hard. Still, a very dedicated and personal vision of some great music worth a listen. -
what are you drinking right now?

At last I found a pure Carignan tasting like the one I had almost forty years ago! -
Nice audio from an Ellington recording session in January, 1938 - "Sonny Greer loses the band".
-
R.I.P. - another original voice has moved on ....
-
They added singles as bonus tracks to these two - then why didn't they add the Baker Street single to their Maupin reissue which was recorded at the same time for the same label?

Can't find this tune list anywhere in Lord ...
-
Having a cursory listen after a friendly board member sent me a link - there are more than one version of some tunes, it seems (e.g. Night In Tunisia). Seems like this is inluded (from the Lord Disco): Live In Europe 1959 : Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers : Lee Morgan (tp) Wayne Shorter (ts) Walter Davis, Jr. (p) Jymie Merritt (b) Art Blakey (d) "KB-Hallen", Copenhagen, Denmark, November 5, 1959 Blues march Landscape LS2-916 [CD] The midget - Nellie Blye [Mama "G"] - A night in Tunisia - Note: All above titles also on Royal Jazz (Dan)RJD516 [CD] titled "Live In Copenhagen 1959". The pianist is incorrectly listed as Walter Bishop on both CD issues. The announcer sounds Swedish to me. Defintely not Shorter on these tracks.

The earliest recording of Take Five listed in the Tom Lord Disco dates from a September 1958 Monterey performance, but that is probably incorrect, as the back cover lists 1966 as the year of recordng. The recording you ask for is scheduled for January 2017 release over here - the samples sound good. Seems to be previously unreleased material.
