Larry Bunker was another doubler.

Thank you all, my friends! My loving wife took me out to breakfast this morning, but had to go to work at noon. Quite a normal work day for us, but we will sit down in the evening and listen to some music that was most influential for my own musical career - the Cellar Door sessions (which were kind of a birthday present to myself: nobody dares giving me CDs once they have seen my collection ....) Let me take the occasion and say how much I enjoy being here with you all on the board!
-
The one I go to is located at Berger Strasse 125-129 - 10 minutes east with the subway from the other one. The guy who runs the CD department is a big jazz fan, I know him for what must be 20 years ..... much better stock there.
-
Have a nice bluesy birthday in the positive musical sense of the word!

The Pres Aladdin CD says it was written by a team Miller-Krueger-Conn-Styne.

Why do so many people hate Lonehill and other imports?
mikeweil replied to Jazztropic's topic in Re-issues
Well, I think we should start a thread with a black list (LoneHill etc.), a white list (Mighty Quinn, Water etc.) and a grey list (European copyright applied), with a short explanation. ........ it still would leave the decision in the buyer's conscience ........ -
Why do so many people hate Lonehill and other imports?

I agree on the crappy quality of their reissues. I bought only one so far - Jon Hendricks' "A Goog Git Together", as I was looking for that one as long as I collect jazz - and was disappointed by the design, and most importantly, the sound quality. Dubbed from LP and amateurishly treated with some de-clicker. I would buy only something if the chances I might get it otherwise are approaching zero. Still I question the unwillingness of EMI or so to sue them on one hand, and to do it themselves or lease them on the other - but, as Mighty Quinn et al. show us, something's happenin' in that respect, and I'd prefer a properly licensed issue any time, as little money I have for CDs. -
Not me. Real instruments couldn't make those sounds. Which may be your point, , but red is not blue, if you know what I mean. I do - it's just a matter of preference.

If it's so illegal, why don't they sue them? Are the costs too high compared to the license fee they can get out of it, or is it they just don't care? -
2006 annual wish-list for Conns (or maybe Waters?)
mikeweil replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Re-issues
Yes....and a big to that! At this stage of the game, I'm much more interested in what's going on with the Mighty Quinn release schedule rather than spin wheels thinking about yet another Jimmy Smith BN release. Love to see a couple of Les McCann's first PJ titles hit the shelves. Perhaps a two'fer w/something like 'Plays the Truth' and 'The Shout'? Actually, four or five of those McCann PJs bundled up would make an excellent Select set. The Montgomery Brothers "Plus 5 Others" from w/Hubbard from '57 would be nice.....as would a Lennie McBrowne and the 4 Souls CD. Here's hoping MC sees this. I have a Japanese LP of the Lenny McBrowne (and the other on Riverside) - this deserves a reissue! Yes and the McCann's - although I don't expect as much depth from them as from other soulful pianists of the time. Those Montgomery Brothers tracks - yes, and the Jon Hendricks with Wes - the LoneHill issue was dupped from LP and heavily de-clicked changing the transients and overall sound considerably. -
Thanks for the hint - I'll check this one out.

You couldn't have put it better. You have to listen! - the composition, the structures, the solos. Sometimes it takes several repeated listenings before these things become apparent. People get distracted by the wrong things because they don't know how to listen to music. I wish someone would give him the opportunity to re-record all these with real instruments. I have a hard time to listen to these "cheesy" sounds. I'm pretty sure we then would experience something on the level of Gil Evans.

Why do so many people hate Lonehill and other imports?

I should add that the lack of a personal relationship with jazz (or any other type of music appreciated only by a minority) among the staff of the majors is another very important factor. -

It's easy to look at this only from the perspective of the copyright owner. But: We in Germany say that property comes with an obligation, in this case the obligation to keep this music accesible, in a form sounding as close to the original as possible (this is aimed at MP3's, which are unacceptable to me for sound reasons). As far as I see it, the attitude of today's major labels to make as much profit as possible combined with their specific manufacturing processes that allow a profit only beyond 10.000 or I don't know how many copies, simply because they are so big, makes for a situation where they don't have an economic motovation to do it. That a profit can be made out of these vintage recordings under the proper conditions, is demonstrated by LonHill et al. every day. There should be a way. I wouldn't mind downloading the albums and the cover art and liner notes to burn and print them myself, if it's done with a serious attitude, e.g. including alternate takes etc. But it should be kept availbale in some form. -
The big difference is that Jamal's recordings already stood the test of time ...... I doubt Kenny G.'s have as much substance.

Crawford didn't invent them, but I think no other guitarist did them as well. They always fit the chord changes, and the rhythmic variations are as hip as any master bongocero would do them. In fact, they're hard to play on bongos as they fit the technical possibilities of guitar picking so well. He grooved like a great percussionist. p.s.: I cherish Crawford's LP on Candid, Smooth Groove .....

Fully agreed! Especially the Riversides are, IMHO, rather underestimated compared to the Blue Notes - I think the Blue Note cult sometimes borders on fetishism. Those Riversides has everything the Blue Notes had, great musicians and tunes, good production and planning, great writing and concepts, and I often like the sound better. If only the tapes were in a little better condition, but new remastering should work wonders here.

I paid € 69,90, but I don't mind. I knew the set would be great - I long hoped to hear this music in its unabridged form, as the tracks as released on Live-Evil were a pivotal experience to me at the beginnimng of my "musical career". For me, it's indispensable, and the commentaries of all the band members are a very nice read.

Ray Barretto has passed away

I was afraid I would read this rather soon after the news about him having to undergo open heart surgery twice within a short time. Muchas gracias, Ray, for the groove and spirit. Have a nice descarga with Mongo, Tito, Cal, Willie, Al, and all the others! -
No idea - I suggest you PM Cal's son about this.

The LP and CD were simply titled Tjader.

Tell how you like it, will ya? -
Our much loved friends from the Pyrenean mountains (Definitive) just released this double CD: AFAIK (how about a Japansese issue?) this is the first CD release of the only trio LP with Walter Perkins (who was replaced by Vernel Fournier by the time the next session was recorded). But it is by no means complete, as it does not include the drummerless trio's recordings for Parrot that were only on 78's or remain unissued. I'll buy it anyway and post here if it sounds the same as the recent CD reissues.
