  1. I think all aspects playing a part apply to both partners in the game: Music is unimportant without someone who listens, even if it is only the person who plays it. But if more than one is listening, it's better, of course. Which leads to the social/ritual aspect. I think there is always some ritualistic aspect, even with a music lover sitting down at home and puting an LP on the turntable. The intention someone pointed out is very important, but on either side: If John Cage determines the background noises to be music by his intention, it's music, although most listeners won't accept this. Intention on the side of the performer and the listener is the key to it all, me thinks. Now the way the sounds are organized are subject to the individual and cultural factors of the performer and listener - the possibilities are infinite, as Jim aptly stated.

    Elton Dean

Sad indeed. I liked Soft Machine best at the time he was with the group. He did some interesting things with electric sax, and played very nicely with Keith Tippett's group around the same time. Somehow I always liked his playing. R.I.P.
  3. Hubert Laws - no kidding! Check out his tenor solos with Mongo Santamaria's band, e.g. Cold Sweat.
  4. Their website says that they are sold out of the Wes Montgomery so I can't replace my defective one. I don't suppose anyone would be willing to go to the Frankfurt (or any other store) to buy another one for me? I could then return my defective one to the mail order part. Seems that of the LP sized boxes, only the Monk and Pepper remain at the Frankfurt shop - but someone should be able to help you out with a single disc .....
  5. Yes, please!
  6. Seems I overlooked this one: The liner displays a photo of Cal standing behind a conga drum, hands on skin, and the notes mention him working out on conga on this track. That's a detail I have to correct in my eternal work in progress, the Cal Tjader Discography. Thanks for pointing this out!
  7. Their "coming soon" page tells there are more Don Ellis reissues to come ... probably the only remaining Columbia LP, Autumn.
  8. Thanks for pointing this out - this is extremely rare stuff and indispensable for an Ellis nut like me. Dave MacKay is a pianist, BTW.
  9. Well, I did - and I didn't .....
  10. Salvador Dali - egotistical and overrated - he stole quite a bit from Max Klinger, but nobody notices, as Klinger seems to be unknown to most of today's art lovers. Andy Warhol - milking the same idea too often, and very neurotic. Henri Matisse doesn't do much for me - there isn't much that he attempted that Cézanne or Picasso haven't done better.
  11. Nobody got himself that one? You will regret it, it swings from beginning to end and is great fun to listen to! There's some really groovy shit on that one. Am diggin' it. Thanks for the heads up. My enthusiasm has diminished just a little - only as far as the session with rhythm section are concerned. Hopkins' playing was so irregular as far as song forms are concerned that he gave the rhythm men a very hard time following him, especially when they overdubbed (which was quite often the case here). But as a soloist, he was one of the greatest! P.S. Got my replacement for the Pepper box yesterday (disc 2 was missing) at the Frankfurt shop , and they had several copies of each box in stock - all of them the LP sized US boxes, whenever they were issued in that format. So you still have a chance, it seems. Didn't spot any more of the Mosaics, however .....
  12. I pre-ordered the Ayers and received confirmation e-mail - release is sometime in March ....
  13. DeJohnette - no surprise - always displayed excellent taste when choosing drummers for his records when he played a keyboard: Roy Haynes and Bob Moses were the other choices.
  14. ... altough I think Jack would rather pull out his dusted melodica ...
  15. AFAIK young Jack started as a pianist but was turned around when he went to see the Ahmad Jamal trio and watched Vernel Fournier's subtle brushwork.
  16. I've always liked them. Their groove was good, loose and tight at the same time. Keyboardist Hugo Fattoruso settled in the US, BTW: http://www.candombe.com/
  17. His son, Mike Merritt, also plays bass.
  18. All roadkill is sick, but this painted rat is double sick!
  19. Basically, I think Keepnews was a little over-ambitious and neglected to document the musicians' working groups (like the geat Tyner band with Eric Gravatt). OTOH an artist like Joe Henderson was thrilling in ever changing contexts and reacted with highly inspired blowing. Although the labels were treated seprately I find it hard to draw a line between Prestige, Fantasy, and Milestone releases in the 1970's - and some artists switched. Jack de Johnette's LPs on Milestone and Prestige I like a lot, they take a lot of chances and display a creative approach to tradition. Luis Gasca's 2 Fantasy Lps are rare and get high prices on eBay.
  20. It's the meeting of Gruntz' jazz band (including excellent hornmen Don Cherry and Sahib Shihab, the latter on soprano throughout) with a handful of Tunisian musicians. They mesh well - if you have a liking for jazz with oriental sounds, go for it - one of the best of the genre, IMHO.
  21. Now which of the ones mentioned above have you got? Esadinado? I have that one, it's very nice!
  22. Funny pic ......

  24. That one gets a from me. The recent LoneHill CD has only the Jim Hall tracks from this, which were done only later when Dick Bock re-packaged for 12" LP - he omitted two of the Howard Roberts tracks from the original 10" LP. So this would be a nice opportunity for completion. I have a Japanese LP reissue with that very cover, the music is excellent. Isn't there some later Chico Hamilton that also was not included in the Mosaic box? I guess Mighty Quinn might be more likely to reissue this. I'd like a new CD issue of the Jim Hall trio with unedited tracks (dubbed from LP - there are plenty around in good condition). The latin and orchestra dates of Clare Fischer on Pacific Jazz merit a reissue, IMHO. I second the wishes for the Tyrone Washington and the "Silver and ..." series (although I have but one of the latter), and that Urbie Green would be very nice! I'd rather see reissues of material that is not yet or never was on CD than single CDS of stuff was or is available in box sets ....
