That box is one more proof that Craft's CD boxes are LP-derived in conception. In the OJC days all that was on two CDs.

It may have to do with the fact that many used the Real Book instead of learning to transcribe on their own. And true to European tradition they learned the music from the sheets instead of listening to records. I have observed the same as you.

I saw him twice, with Oscar Peterson and with Eastern Rebellion.

To me, Clapton always sounded like a lick collector with no real deep feeling for what he imitated. (Not to offend any fan of his.) Beck otoh was a real improvisor.

That Craft box was already discussed in a different thread, where I wrote about the tracks missing: "The European budget label Solar Records did this years ago, fitting all on only three CDs inluding a bonus LP - Craft limits each CD to the "original album". I will probably buy the Craft boy as I expect excellent sound, but they could have done a real big box and cover it all. At least they added the alternate take from the first session that was on on the OJC reissues. But the three sessions resulted in 34 takes - the box has only 26, missing the equivalent of another LP!"

For me, it is the changes and the structure. If both are distinct, it is easy. But I would fail miserably with any newer sequence and all those substitutions.
