Man, that current BMG offer of free shipping with a 5 cd purchase brings the Brubeck "For All Time" set to $17.99 SHIPPED. Well under $4.00 a cd Can't beat that price... I just bought 5 SACD: 3 Dylan issues, the Monk/Coltrane, and the Shaft soundtrack-$5.99 each-with no shipping it's too good to pass up. This is their best sale in ages. VISA will like me next month.

The cd sounds fine to these ears.... I was surprised at how well it was mixed.

Seldom do I get SO excited about a new find. So it was a real treat when I opened my latest package from the #@*^@ at Dusty Groove and pulled out the Fresh Sound re-issue of "Little Band Big Jazz" by Conte Candoli's All Stars-originally issued by Crown Records (lp) in 1960. I've heard that it was also issued with Vince Guaraldi as the leader. I expected some swinging West Coast Jazz but nothing that would knock me out. Man, was I wrong....... This cd is SO soulful in the best of the hard bop vein. Each of the bandmembers shines: Buddy Collette sticking to tenor sax matches Candoli lick for lick in ensemble playing-you'd swear you're listening to a Blue Note prime 60's date. His solos will have you nodding in ecstasy. Vince Guaraldi's swinging blues lines are a revelation-no "Peanuts" sleepy piano lines here-I've never heard Vince play like this before. Leroy Vinnegar: what can you say about Leroy that has not been said before-steady as a rock, always in the pocket-dependable as you can get. Stan Levey: clean cymbal work and right up front-whomever did the mastering on this session for Fresh Sound needs a raise! and lastly, CONTE!! As soulful as ANY prime 60's Byrd, or Hubbard-clear, warm, strong, and swinging so hard. WHAT A SESSION.. The only shame is that you get only 28:54 of music, but they make every second count-not a weak moment. And a great color shot of the band in session on the cover. Give the "bastards" at the Groove your $12.99 and listen to this "Little Band" make BIG JAZZ... Guaranteed that you will hit the replay button on your cd player-and wonder why this session was kept locked up for so long. If this session had been released on Blue Note, it would fit in nicely as one of their classic issues. CHECK IT OUT.......

I've been following all the hysteria about the long anticipated release of Brian Wilson's legendary "Smile" cd-due out Sept. 28. It's been lauded as brilliant, "Beatles quality", orchestral-THE Beach Boys/Wilson long lost masterpiece. The buzz in the press has been strong and the prelim reviews have been raves-at least those that I've read. I've been debating racing over to my local Tower to pick it up on its date of release as Tower has been having one day sales on hot new Releases. Anyone else out there following suit??

Hi, just sent you an e-mail about the Lonnie Smith, Oliver Nelson, Al Grey, Morgan/Jones and a few others.

It's on RCA Victor (Spain)... What's it like? Blue Mitchell get much action? -Jeff
-
I've seen Harold Vick's "Caribbean Suite" is being re-released. It has my main man Blue Mitchell playing on it and I always like to check out most anything pre-1972 in which Mitchell is featured. Anybody have/heard this one? Inquiring minds what to know! Thanks in advance! -Jeff

Need cover scan of "The Little Giant"-VDJ 1547
jazzkrow replied to jazzkrow's topic in Offering and Looking For...
THANKS, GUYS! I'm looking mostly for the color cover. Liner notes in English would be cool, Matt! Good luck tomorrow night at your art show, Matt! -
I found the Japanese Riverside issue of Johnny Griffin's "The Little Giant" (#VDJ-1547) for a very reasonable price on half.com due to fact that it did not have the front cover booklet for the jewel case-it did have the back "spine." Is there someone out there who could make me a color copy of the cover-and the liner notes if possible? Thanks in advance... -Jeff

That Danish seller of the ultra "rare" ($10 maybe) Chet Baker Profile cd should change his moniker to PT Barnum. The nerve....

MAN, I WANT THIS SET.. Now what can I sell to finance it? The Jazztet and Farmer Verve Elites?? Nah, what time the plasma center open? 3X a week for how long.... I haven't been this excited about a set since the Turrentine, Hodges, Byrd/Adams, etc. etc. The countdown begins.....

NAH, This music will live on FOREVER. You've got at least another 40 yrs to enjoy it. Isn't it strange that this 10-15 yr period of music stands out so strongly in 85+ yr history of jazz. IMHO, although the 70's till now produced some memorable music, it just doesn't compare. It can't be just me-born in 1953-but we've got folks here born in the 70's and 80's, who get just as excited as I do when unreleased material, i.e. the recent Andrew Hill Connoisseur, is found/released. Maybe that is why Criss Cross is so admired for their hard boppish new Releases.
-
Another interesting calculation would be "How much of your music collection was recorded between 1955-1967?" I'm guessing 75%+ of my collection is from those Golden Years. Shows you where hard bop ranks with me...and many other collectors here.

What a mark-up for the SACD. $12.59 (plus shipping) for the CD but $46+ for the SACD. Has anyone heard either format?
