  1. No way! That's dreadful news, was he ill? I've been enjoying his music for years and enjoyed a number of live performances
  2. Glad you enjoyed it. I don't find many of this new wave of Brit Jazz very out there, nearly all of it is very defined by rhythmic concept (not a bad thing at all) often with the drummers being the most impressive musicians in these bands, to my ears at least. Whilst I enjoy Binker Golding's and Shabaka Hutching's playing I hear two players still forming their individual voices -Hutchings is certainly getting closer these days. It's interesting that Binker & Moses need to add that little known up and comer and youngster Evan P ( I absolutely love the fact that he's got involved) to lend their music any real element of harmonic or rhythmic freedom. None of which detracts in the slightest from them being "a damn fun listen" like Theon.
  3. For those of you enjoying Binker & Moses and especially Sons of Kemet, I'd suggest a listen trying Theon Cross's album 'Aspirations' https://theoncross.bandcamp.com/releases
  4. Unless I'm misunderstanding you, try listening through this album as the second half is more than just the duo. They're joined by Evan Parker, Byron Wallen, Tori Handsley, Sarathy Korwar (check out his debut for an astonishing album) ao. Basically the second LP of 'Journey...' is the band that's caught live on the latest LP to such great effect. Ok, just now read your next post where you were onto the second half so will presumably have realised the added delights. Their first album 'Dem Ones', on Gearbox, was just the duo Whilst I wouldn't be quite so negative I do agree with some of your analysis here. I think Boyd Moses drums with the knowledge of rhythms and drumming that have happened since '66. I'm also not too sure that many people have made many claims of originality upthread. There's more to 'Journey...' if you listen through, see comment above.
  5. Roland Kirk - We Free Kings [Mercury UK, mono]
  6. Pat Martino - Balyina (The Clear Evidence) [OJC]
  7. Does Kamasi cover EWF? I hope so what a great band, thanks for posting these clips, the day's started well in this part of the world today because of them
  8. Saw Coleman and 5 Elements last night in London. Great show, so will definitely be purchasing this
  9. I'll keep an eye out for it. It does ring some very faint bells, especially the fiction/non-fiction element Sadly my books are largely inaccessible and I can't remember which ones I particularly enjoyed apart from the Laurie Lee.
  10. Womad's a force for good. Brexit and right wing politicians aren't. Here's hoping good prevails in the long run
  11. Thirty years ago I read the Hugh Thomas history and Orwell and others. I think that exhausted my need to read about it for quite a while. When I used to take annual holidays in Spain back in 80s/90s I was still very interested in it. I suspect these chapters my reignite an interest. My interest is often still piqued by novels set then. The chapters about pre-war Barcelona sent my mind back to Mendoza's 'City Of Marvels', a marvellous book as I recall
  12. Your neighbours are enjoying a good selection this evening. That's a terrific album Your neighbours are enjoying a great selection this evening
  13. Streifenjunko - Sval Torv [Sofa]
  14. So was I. Remember it as being revelatory although I can't begin to identify a tracklisting asit all melded into one long track as I recall it
  15. No but I'd like to
  16. Exactly that. Although I'm waiting to see how the post-war relationship with Franco and the establishment pans out. Could yet be that that perception comes more from the years of dictatorship. I'll see and I'll enjoy seeing too, either way. Lowe not to florid so far
  17. they turned the AC off to avoid the noise... EP played Monk both solo and in duet and Wright played Lacy solo. They only played maybe 15-20 minutes total in the first half. Lots of entertaining reminiscing from EP about Lacy and more informed "research" from Wright. I think EP was struggling with the heat too
  18. It certainly does. The early Civil War chapters are particularly enlightening so far
  19. Punishing stage today. Great to see Quintana finally show. Thomas is looking really strong reacting to everything Doumoulin and Roglic threw at him. Froome struggling, amongst all the boos
  20. always pleased to hear a new Texier. He might be accused of ploughing a narrow furrow but it always produces
  21. Last night, Evan Parker and Seymour Wright talking about, analysing and occasionally playing the music of Steve Lacy. Unfortunately furnace conditions in Cafe Oto meant I bailed at half time. Well worth it to hear EP play Monk and to see the rare sight of him sight reading (only previously witnessed with the Kenny Wheeler Large Ensembe, I think) as he said "I don't often play notated music". Which was a bit of an understatement in itself.
  22. Very much enjoying this. Thanks Brad! Reigniting my latent interest in things Spanish and memories of trips to both cities.
  23. Not Much Noise - s/t [PolJazz] enjoy this one more each time I play it. An O Board recommendation, but sadly I can't remember who to credit
  24. Toshio Matsuura Group - Loveplaydance (6 Scenes From The Floor) [Brownswood Recordings]
