  1. thank heavens that was our second string. No invention or penetration and no midfielder who could pass. Apart from that they were good
  2. But it won't be those centre backs in the next round unless there's a raft of injuries or Southgate loses his mind This has all the intensity of a friendly. No injury time at the end of the half says it all really
  3. Definitely interested. He's one of the few artists that I buy new releases of straight off, no delay. He's playing with 5 Elements in London soon, a sadly rare occurrence, and I'll be there
  4. I don't know. They ended up relying on crosses to Hummels to miss more than anything else. A team of that calibre should have been able to unpick the stubborn defence but there was little craft (the English disease) - Mueller and Ozil were anonymous, Gomez surplus apparently to requirements. I could only see Kroos and Kimmich really trying something imaginative and Brandt when he came on (why doesn't he start?). SK defended well and the goalkeeper was great. The Germans didn't lack luck as much as accuracy Definitely
  5. A really enjoyable afternoon's football. Germany did look bereft of ideas but with players of the quality of Brandt, Kimmich and Kroos they'll be back.
  6. Some Joe McPhee today Plan B - From Outer Space [Roaratorio] Joe McPhee & Brian Eubanks - My Undocumented Alien Clarinet [Penultimate Press]
  7. Clarinet Summit - In Concert At The Public Theatre [India Navigation] thoroughly enjoying this new addition, purchase inspired by the John Carter love-in we had upthread recently
  8. But...good enough in the end Inexperienced Nigerian team not so much outplayed but simply missing more of their chances than Argentina did theirs
  9. Brian Eno - Reflection [Warp] lovely, lovely music
  10. VAR was used in the FA Cup last season. Very mixed results
  11. My understanding is that the review can be initiated by both the on-field ref and the VAR ref. The VAR ref can advise the on-field ref that they have missed something (hence the uproar here about the rugby tackles on Kane in the Tunisia game) or the on-field ref can request assistance/confirmation or a viewing from VAR. Whichever way it's going to take some getting used to and won't remove controversies just move them down the decision line a bit. Most UK ex-player pundits are generally positive about the development. I'm undecided as yet
  12. Prince Lasha & Sonny Simmons - Firebirds [Contemporary]
  13. Heatwave confirmed. No rain in Manchester!!
  14. Terrific performance by Morocco, great finish by Aspas getting Spain off the hook. I thought Spain looked oddly non penetrative for much of that game but they win the group
  15. Gunter Hampel Quintet - Heartplants [Saba]
  16. maybe heading England's way. Could be interesting. On that evidence I'd prefer Senegal or Japan
  17. £750 tough at the moment on Discogs! The Centrifuga folks have done a very nice job of it, I think
  18. Niels Viggo Bentzon - Third Stream Music [Centrifuga] another excellent reissue from this label
  19. Yusef Lateef - Eastern Sounds [Transatlantic]
  20. Professional job by England. You can only beat the opposition you're drawn against and they did that with plenty to spare. The next match is the next test
  21. And at last a ref brave enough to make a decision on all the holding
  22. Doing the job required very well. Can't ask for more than that
