  1. String band veterans Andrew and Jim Baxter perform "Georgia Stomp" in today's "Anthology" update....
  2. Jeez, rough room. I didn't think they were bad last night, so much as I thought that the old material didn't suit Roger and Pete's voices anymore. The material on "Endless Wire" was quite good and suited Roger's current vocal style quite well ("Mike Post Theme", "A Man In A Purple Dress"). I think the Who are a great band and have always been a great band, even through their ups and downs. Not many bands could lose Keith Moon and John Entwistle and still soldier on as well as they have. And I think Zack Starkey is a very good drummer, has filled Keith's seat very well, and has done is dad proud...
  3. Indeed! The is the year for the Red Sox. I can feel it in my bones...
  4. Yes, they were a great band. But Roger and Pete still CALL themselves the Who and they have the right to do so. So, yes, there still is a band called the Who. Their last album, "Endless Wire," wasn't too bad either. The problem wasn't so much Pete and Roger as the fact that they just can't play the older songs like they used to (no shame in that...everybody gets older). "Endless Wire" had some quite good songs on it and those songs suited their voices in a way that their old stuff no longer does. I kind of wish they had played something like "Mike Post Theme" along with the hits... As for the game, I was pulling for the Saints but I really thought the Colts would take it in the end. I'm pleasantly surprised at the outcome...
  5. Ah, they don't suck. They're just old. I was telling my daughter about what a great band the Who USED to be while we were watching the halftime show...
  6. Texas Swing forbear Prince Albert Hunt and his Texas Ramblers tear up the joint with "Wake Up Jacob" in today's "Anthology" update.
  7. I own several Hersch albums and admire him tremendously. I'll have to check out what he's been doing lately...
  8. Today's "Anthology" update tells the story of J.W. Day, aka Jilson Setters, a blind fiddler whose sight was restored late in life. Here, he performs the fiddle tune, "The Wild Wagoner."
  9. I'm one of the two thousand people who bought copies of this collection. It's brilliant and I hope he wins. He deserves it.
  10. Ba-dump-dump! "I'll be here all week. Try the veal."
  11. My God...think of what you could get for the Bossa Nova material!
  12. Today we begin volume two of the "Anthology," titled "Social Music." In today's entry, we hear Uncle Bunt Stephens's recording of "Sail Away Lady," an old fiddle tune that dates back to the early 19th century.
  13. Today's entry is the last track on the "Ballads" volume, "Got the Farm Land Blues" by the Carolina Tar Heels. On Tuesday we'll begin volume two, "Social Music."
  14. I don't watch any of these shows and I don't really care about the drama of a bunch of millionaires. However... At least all of the above named gentlemen are talented to some degree or another. Some of them are extremely talented. I'm overwhelmed by the fame of people who do NOTHING AT ALL. People like the Kardashian sisters, Paris Hilton, those knuckleheads on "The Jersey Shore", Jon and Kate, Octomom, etc, etc. These people are WORSE than untalented. If they were merely untalented you could look at their success and say, "Well, there's no accounting for taste. Obviously these people do something that people enjoy..." But all of the people I've named do NOTHING. They are famous simply for being famous. They star in reality shows, behave badly in public, have babies, get hair extensions...and what do we do? We lap it up. We beg for more. I mean, I suppose you could argue that multiple births are, in themselves, somewhat extraordinary (remember the Dionne Quintuplets?), so that at least explains the fuss over Octomom and Jon and Kate. But the rest of them? Paris Hilton? The Kardashians? What have they done, other than have the good fortune to have been born into money? And the "Jersey Shore" people... What is the fascination? Is it merely distraction? I tell you, every time I look at the cover of "People" magazine in the store, all I can think is that they are fiddling while Rome burns...
  15. Today's update features the immortal Charlie Patton - listed here as The Masked Marvel - performing "Mississippi Boweavil Blues."
  16. I think the Duke/Beyonce mashup is brilliant, as is the Nirvana/Beatles mashup. Why worry about what future generations think? It's great music-making!
  17. Thanks! Today's update is the Bently Boys performing "Down on Penny's Farm."
  18. Indeed, one of the greatest soul voices ever. I LOVE the Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes material best, but I also love Teddy's solo stuff. "Love TKO" is one of my all time favorite songs... Favorite Bluenotes song: Tossup between "The Love I Lost" and "Don't Leave Me This Way." Oh, and "Bad Luck." Shit...I can't pick just one! RIP Teddy Bear...
  19. Today's update is Furry Lewis performing a version of "Casey Jones."
  20. The Carter Family return with "Engine One-Forty-Three" on today's "Anthology" update!
  21. From now on, I'll post the blog updates on the "Anthology" thread, and the new episodes of the podcast here. New all-blues New Year's episode is up today! You can hear the first three episodes below: Episode 3 - The Holiday Episode Episode 2 Episode 1
  22. Today's update features Wlliam and Versey Smith's "When That Great Ship Went Down," recounting the 1912 "Titanic" disaster...
  23. "It's spelled Raymond Luxury-Yacht, but it's pronounced "Throat-Warbler-Mangrove.""
