  1. I always want to keep the difference between the levels, track for track, for each side of the original LP. So before recording I play the LP side, set my software (Cool Edit as it is) on "peak hold", and when finished adjust the recording level accordingly (for example up 2.5 dB if the peak of that side is at -3 dB). My aim is to have the peak value of the side as close to 0 dB as possible without clipping.
  2. Thanks for checking! I'm not at home now, so I can't check the publishing company, but it was the same as the two included compositions by Hank himself (not Screen Gems-EMI Music Inc). What would it mean that the BMI numbers are consecutive?
  3. Does anybody know the maiden name of Hank Jones' wife and the year they married? Well, I wouldn't think so, but I thought I could at least ask. On the "Have You Met Hank Jones" Savoy LP, recorded in 1956, there is a composition called Teddy's Dream. On the original issue (MG-12084) it is credited to Von Steele. On the 1979 Arista reissue (SJL 1124) it is credited to T. Von Selle. The liner notes [EDIT: of the reissue] mention that it is composed by Hank's wife: I suppose the "T" in "T. Von Selle" is for Theodosia, the name of Hank's wife. But what about Selle/Steele? And one other thing that doesn't make sense is that several articles from the last years have referred to her as Hank Jones wife "for more than 40 years"; an article published in Detroit Free Press in 2006 (not available on their site, but reposted on JazzCorner here) said "his wife of 41 years". That means that they were married around 1965. But her composition, which she wrote when they had "just gotten married", was recorded already in 1956. Unfortunately the Iwamoto Hank Jones discography does not indicate the name of composers.
  4. Couw's post did not mention you, but you are "assuming" that you are one of those he is referring to and then proceed to "react" by interpreting his post in a slightly ridiculing manner, which only serves to prove what we already knew: that you don't like couw.
  5. They could be doing some sort of RMS normalization which is slightly better in this regard, as it takes into account the sound levels as perceived by the human ear, but another drawback is that they will have to record everything with a generous headroom to avoid the risk of clipping, and then normalize, as they will probably not play through the whole LP beforehand to note the peaks. This way the dynamic range - of both the analog and digital parts of the chain - is not used optimally. The last part (italics by me) is false.
  6. Good to see you here, Michel! According to the booklet of the "Complete Warner Bros. recordings" set the personnel for 'Wiggle-Waggle' and 'Lil' Brother' is: Herbie Hancock (p, el p); Joe Newman, Johnny Coles, Ernie Royal (tp); Garnett Brown, Benny Powell (tbn); Ray Alonge (frh); Joe Farrell (as, ts); Joe Henderson (ts); Arthur "Babe" Clarke (bari); Eric Gale, Billy Butler (g); Jerry Jermott (el b); Bernard Purdie (dr); George Devens (perc) Soloists are Joe Newman and Joe Henderson on 'Wiggle-Waggle'; Joe Farrell and Eric Gale on 'Lil' Brother'.
  7. Brownie, how is that Donaldson date? Looks like quite a lineup!
  8. Steve, as you stated yourself you have left other forums because you didn't agree with the way they were run. It is my understanding that this was partly the reason for Hans leaving, rather than a "disagreement with one single forum member". In a sad way, this serves as a reminder that the "free" atmosphere here is not percieved as very friendly by everyone, and using the old "private club" analogy, some posters would be adviced to think twice about what they are posting since I'm certain they would never use the tone face-to-face to someone that they are using in their posts here.
  9. The "Back from the Gig" 2-LP set was issued in the BN-LA series in the seventies: http://www.jazzdisco.org/bluenote/la-cat/a/#bn-la-488-h2 Half of it was the Ervin session, the other half "A Happy Frame of Mind". The Ervin session was reiussed on CD in 2005 as "Tex Book Tenor".
  10. This is indeed a sad day for the forums.
  11. Have a look here and scroll down to the entry for BST 84435.
  12. In my country a collection of data gains a certain degree of protection if a "considerable investment" has been made to put it together. I suppose some other countries may have corresponding laws.
  13. Again (as has been stated by me and others before) there are a lot of misconceptions about the sound quality of MP3s. Many of those who have judgements along the lines of "thinner sound" or "digitally compressed" have actually never conducted blind tests themselves. A portable device cannot have the same technical specifications as those of home audio equipment, but as for the format itself, it is - with the right settings and compression software - transparent (indistiguishable from the original) for most listeners, most of the time.
  14. Wayne Shorter did a version of Sibelius' Valse Triste on Soothsayer. Gary Burton and pianist Makoto Ozone did an album with (as I recall) several classical pieces, among others the Prélude from the lovely Tombeau de Couperin by Maurice Ravel.
  15. Joe and Pharoah Sanders play flutes on Alice Coltrane's Ptah the El Doud. iirc i read somewhere that he also plays flute somewhere on Andrew Hill's Point of Departure I just listened to Freddie Hubbard's 'Red Clay' and noted that Henderson plays some flute on one track (but does not solo).
  16. Do you think it would be possible to use some other sports as the basis for an analogy? Golf?
  17. Surely one of the more rugged-sounding Blue Notes. But I also find them attractive. Isn't it "Pensativa" where it sounds as if Spaulding not really knows the melody? Now playing Herbie Hancock's Speak Like a Child (recently acquired original stereo Liberty to replace my blue label UA pressing which is off center).
  18. Brownie, I do not own the Bruyninckx myself, though I've long been thinking of getting it on CDR (or equivalent), but it is my understanding that the categorized books were developed at the request of Japanese collectors, and that an alphabetic A-Z version (in A4 format) was also manufactured all along. Here's an old thread: Bruyninckx A-Z completed In that thread Michael Fitzgerald posted a link for Norbert Ruecker's site which has the discography buried way down the pages. ( http://www.jazz-book.com/disc1.htm ) which I reposted in this thread as well (6th edition of Bruyninckx out). However, I'm not sure even that link is up to date anynmore, as it says that Edition 6 "will be out in July 2007".
  19. George Harrison? (Died in LA BTW)
  20. Weren't there rumours about Bernard Purdie playing on Sgt. Pepper?
  21. I don't look at it this way. From what I've heard here (but mostly elsewhere) I'd rather give my money to Bruyninckx.
  22. Haden is also on parts of "Zeitgeist".
  23. If it's anything like his other A&M album I wouldn't hope for too much.
