  1. Does anyone know why some of the recordings on the Milestone Years boxset have not been issued as individual CDs? All the remastering etc has been done and I would have thought that Joe Henderson is one of the better sellers for Fantasy (now Concord, of course). As with much in life, it's a mystery! David
  2. Mike, thanks for the link. I've e-mailed them to see whether they have a copy in stock. Kevin, can you remember where you purchased your copy of the CD? And thanks to everyone else for your comments. I do know how good the recording is - I've got the vinyl to prove it! David
  3. I have been gradually replacing all my Joe Henderson vinyl on Milestone as and when they come out on CD but so far I have been unable to locate a copy of his CD 'Power to the people'. It is shown as available on Amazon but so far they have been unable to obtain a copy. Has it ever been released on CD? I know it is included in the 'Milestone Years' boxset but since I have all of his other recordings that I want, I don't want to have to buy the boxset just for this one.
  4. Here is my latest batch of vinyl for sale: David's ebay
  5. With the good exchange rate now, it's probably cheaper to order it directly from Amazon.com.
  6. Could you let me know where to look as well please. Thanks
  7. I see that David Binney has made his latest album available as a download on his website David Binney. He is also making a number of live performances available. Has anyone any information about the new release or how good the recording quality is on the club dates?
  8. I've just received two CDs from my favourite seller in Japan, Hiroshi Tanno of earlyrecords.com. 'These Rooms' by the Jim Hall Trio with Tom Harrell on Denon is a marvellous session with everyone on top form. The reissue has three additional tracks, including a great version of 'Bimini' which I have always loved since first hearing it on the Michel Petrucciani recording 'Power of Three' with Wayne Shorter & Jim Hall. The other tracks are a mixture of solos, duos, trios & quartets. All in all, a very welcome reissue & for once I can agree with the AMG review that this is 'an overlooked treasure'. The second is an early recording from 1970 by The Gary Peacock Trio called 'Eastward'. It dates from when he was living in Japan and features Masabumi Kikuchi on piano & Hiroshi Murakami on drums. It's an interesting, if not essential release, with the trio sounding similar to the Paul Bley trios of that time. Not surprising I suppose, since much of the music was written by Gary Peacock who was playing a lot with Paul Bley about that time. I don't know anything about the Japanese players but they sound more than competent in this setting. I see that Masabumi Kikuchi has a number of other recordings available in Japan; can anyone recommend any of them?

  11. Looking at the Concord website it shows that all the original music - 32 tracks - is on three CDs, with a fourth CD containing TWO additional tracks; 'Tune up' & 'Walkin' - Live at The Blue Note'. I thought the extra CD was going to contain EIGHT tracks. Does anyone know anything about the two listed tracks?
  12. It's actually on eMusic but with no tracks to download. What does that mean?
  13. A couple of CDs & an LP for sale on ebay: My ebay list
  14. To my ears Donny McCaslin sounds very much like Chris Potter, so I don't think Potter's absence is a problem. BTW here's a decent review from 'that other jazz bullettin board': Review of Dave Douglas - Meaning and Mystery
  15. I've been playing my copy for about a week now and am really enjoying it. It's nothing like his 'chamber music jazz' - although I must say I like that too! It's more funky with the horns playing over a great fender/bass/drums rythmn section. Dave is on top form and Donny McCaslin on tenor fits in very well with his latest group. I find that it's almost impossible to pigeonhole Dave - every one of his groups is different and often CDs by the same group are very different. However I always find his music interesting and keep on buying it, so he must be doing something right!
  16. Here is my latest batch of vinyl for sale - includes two very rare FMP recordings: David's ebay listing
  17. I do. If you already have some solo Hill I don't suggest this is a priority. Put it this way - you'll know if you need to have this. That said, I see it goes for reasonable prices. I'd caution against a sealed copy, as the rice paper inner sleeve which these AH LPs came in has a tendency to stick to the LP if stored under pressure. I like Andrew Hill's solo outings and yes, I agree, this isn't one of the essential ones. However, it's the only one of his recordings that I haven't been able to replace vinyl by CD. Does anyone know why this has never been given a CD release? Many of the other recordings on Artists House have been.
  18. Mine is a promo - bought on ebay earlier this year. I see that there's quite a few copies for sale on Amazon. Perhaps one of them is a 'non-promo' copy.
  19. I am putting all my vinyl on ebay in bite-size chunks. Latest instalment here: David's Ebay List
  20. I've checked the recording details in my Mosaic boxset - 'The Complete Candid Recordings of Charles Mingus' & there are a few slight differences from your details: On the second set for October 20, 1960: - Booker Ervin, Jimmy Knepper & Britt Woodman are omitted from 'Reincarnation of a lovebird No 1' - Jimmy Knepper & Britt Woodman are omitted from 'Vasserlean' On the first set for November 11, 1960: - Ted Curson & Eric Dolphy are omitted for 'Bugs' On the second set for November 11, 1960: - Eric Dolphy and Jimmy Knepper are omitted from 'Me and you'. ie they are both present on tracks 1-6, not 1-4 Hope that helps!
