My father got this after I relayed Chuck's advice. He is very happy with it. Oh dear, does this mean that only 'old people', like me (and Chuck?), are buying it? This does not bode well for future sales! However, I suppose you have to be a certain age to even have any vinyl! Our drummer is buying it too. He is only 50! Only a child!!

Mine's on its way. I'll report when I've listened to it.

Here, as promised, are my experiences of installing/using the Xitel InPort: Ordered it last Saturday from www.beststuff.co.uk for £55. Not the cheapest price (by a few £s) but they agreed to ship immediately. Arrived tuesday & took about an hour to set up. I followed the 'idiot's guide' faithfully & there were no major problems. Played around with it for a few hours and then managed to tape four albums today; again, with no real problems. To my ears, the CD-Rs sound as good as the original vinyl and I'm really pleased with the results. So, thanks again to everyone, especially Chuck, who recommended it. By recording & then selling my remaining vinyl it should pay for itself in no time and I also have something now that I can use for taping radio broadcasts etc.

Plus the additional shipping costs & possible customs duties. I'm getting mine from the UK

What a great board this is! Thanks to everyone for your help & advice. I've decided to go for the Xitel Inport since that seems to do what I want & comes recommended by Chuck. It's also cheaper than the 'PhonoPreAmp iVinyl' so that's another point in it's favour! I'll let you know how things turn out.

I have a large LP collection which I am gradually replacing by CD on an 'as and when' basis. However I have a number of LPs that I am sure will never be reissued on CD plus some that I quite enjoy but don't want to pay to replace by a CD. Therefore I'm looking for the best way of converting my LPs to CD using some hardware/software and my Windows XP computer. I don't want anything too complicated - who does? - but I'd like the finished product to sound good with gaps between tracks etc. Can anyone recommend something that does this and is easily available in the UK? BTW I saw in a newspaper today a very short review of something described as a 'PhonoPreAmpiVinyl' from a company called Terratec. It is a freestanding unit about the size of a cigarette pack and connects direct to a turntable, with another connection to a computer via the USB port. It does not require any drivers, sound cards or power supply, so seems very easy to set up etc. Does anyone know anything about this particular product?

I sometimes think a red mist descends on some people when they see something on ebay that they want and common sense goes out the window. Like you found, how difficult is it to do a little research before bidding?

I second the positive review of the two 'Golden Afrique' releases. Of the two, I prefer Vol.1 so I would try that first. BTW there are a couple of used copies currently available here: Amazon.com

Seems you're right... I tried all the larger international press/newspaper shops in Zurich mainstation... only chance might be a music shop, but I doubt I'll find it. Is it coming out monthly, so a 7 issue subscription would be for only half a year? No, it's bi-monthly so 7 issues will take you up to the end of 2007. I don't think you'll be disappointed with it!
-
I'm not sure if it is available through retailers - I get mine by post through an annual subscription. Can I add my plug as well. It's a great read and always comes with a free CD containing tracks from many of the recordings that are reviewed. Without it I'm not sure how I would ever hear about what is available and like Tony I invariably end up buying a few CDs on the strength of their reviews. If you're interested in taking out a subscription then their website is here: Songlines

I'd love to see the Richie Kamuca recordings on Concord make it onto CD. Is this too much to ask?

I can't comment on the putumayo label but for compilations I can really recommend the ones compiled by Charlie Gillett, who used to have a weekly 'world music' programme on the BBC World Service until he had to retire recently due to ill health. He issues a 2xCD compilation of the best tunes from his programme each year with the catchy title 'World 2001 2002 etc.' They have been released on a variety of labels - 'Virgin', 'Wrasse', 'Narada World' etc and cover music from virtually every country in the world. They are absolutely terrific and I would recommend that you try one and if you like it, buy all the others. They started to be issued in 2001 so there are six to choose from. If your interested here's this years compilation on Amazon: Amazon.com

I don't think it was ever a legit release. The French CBS twofer was a legitimate release. The production of the album was supervised by Henri Renaud. DMG has a copy of the French CBS release and/or a CD-R copy for sale: DMG

I've been buying a lot of 70's music recently, including: Charles Tolliver - Impact (Enja-remastered). A terrific live set recorded in Germany in 1972. Ted Curson with the George Arvanitas Trio - Pop Wine (Futura). Recorded in Paris in 1971 & MUCH better than I'd hoped for. I'm still awaiting delivery of the 'live' Dizzy Reece CD on Futura - 'From In to Out'. I expect this to be another good 'un! Also been buying a lot of Henry Threadgill including a great session from 1982 - 'When was that?' Finally, I got the new 'Atomic' CD in the post today, 'Happy New Ears'. Another great recording.

What's any of this to do whether he's a good singer or not? I don't have any problems with someone not liking him but really .............. Anyway my question was 'Does anyone know whether he has a new record deal?'
-
Perhaps he gets confused as to where the decimal point should be!
-
What does this mean???????????????????????

Does anyone know what Kurt Elling is doing nowadays? All his Blue Note recordings are terrific, especially 'Live in Chicago' but he doesn't seem to have released anything since 'Man in the air' in 2003. I presume his contract with Blue Note has been terminated but why hasn't any other label taken up this unique talent?
