  1. I'm afraid that I'm rather 'underwhelmed' with this particular set. Whilst I really enjoyed the music on my Artists House LP I've found that what was released on the single LP was probably enough for me. Many of the additional tracks in the set have a similar 'feel' about them and there is one particular refrain that seems to crop up in several of the tunes which I find irritating after several listens. Being an Andrew Hill 'completist' I had to have the set but there are plenty of better recordings by him out there including several better solo sessions, especially 'Verona Rag' & 'Faces of Hope' on Soul Note
  2. I received this a few days ago from Downtown Music Gallery and it's a stonker. Horace is on top form playing three lengthy pieces and is very well backed up by Reggie Bullen (trumpet), Gary Bias (alto & soprano saxes), Sabir Matten (tenor sax), Roberto Miguel Mirand (bass) & Everett Brown Jnr (drums). None of the horn players are known to me but they play beautifully and I can only assume they were local players from LA. The recording was made in 1986 but like many of his Nymbus West releases, little further information is given. It's the only recording I have by him playing in a sextet and is definitely recommended to anyone who enjoys the music of this unique musician.
  3. I bought a Japanese re-issue of 'Jazz Guitar' from Hiroshi Tanno at earlyrecords.com a few months ago which has complete versions of the ten original tracks. I presume that some of the tracks are LP dubs but the sound overall is excellent. It doesn't contain the track 'Too close for comfort' which was issued on a Pacific Jazz anthology and was never on the original LP. For anyone that's interested the catalogue number is TOCJ-6819
  4. I have most of Hampton's recordings and this is one of my favourites. I bought it many years ago when it was released in the UK on the Black Lion label.
  5. Here is my latest batch of vinyl for sale, including some which has never been released on CD: Vinyl for sale
  6. I have an nice vinyl copy for sale currently on ebay
  7. Does anyone know why none of the 'John Stevens Away' LPs on the Vertigo label have ever been released? I have been listening to my vinyl copies recently and had forgotten how good they are. I know this particular group was rather different from most of John's other 'free' music but it really was rather good. The personnel on both ''Mazin' Innit' and 'Somewhere in between' is: John Stevens - drums Nick Stephens - electric bass Ron Herman - acoustic bass Robert Calvert - soprano & tenor saxes David Cole - electric guitar and I think there was a third LP that I never bought. I seem to remember that the rock group 'Juicy Lucy' also recorded on Vertigo and their music has all been released on CD by Castle, so I wonder whether they hold the rights to release it.
  8. Simmons looks fine... but how much is NOK 83,-? (if they make it available for download then why only in Norway? ) (sound samples sound fine however) NOK 83 = $12.87 or £6.74, so they're not that cheap.

It's funny but I was just thinking the same thing. I think it must be BMG but I seem to remember that some of the Fontana recordings have come out on Black Lion. What a great reissue programme that would be. All the original Fontana recordings complete with Marte Roling sleeves. Perhaps someone in Japan might consider reissuing them again.

Sorry, but what does this refer to?

It may be the 'real thing' but it's virtually impossible to obtain in any other form than a CD-R. If it ever does gets re-released (I'm not holding my breath!), then I for one will buy it, but for now I'll continue listening to the CD-R.

You don't need to think once, there's copy here: DMG It's a CD-R but a perfect copy from the Japanese issued CD (I think). It comes with all the art work.
  13. Stop nitpicking, everyone; the music's terrific - just buy it! PS it's a shame that the set the set doesn't include 'Live in Tokyo'. I agree with Stereojack, it's the best thing they ever did.

  15. My latest sale of vinyl comes to an end tomorrow: Vinyl on ebay Please e-mail me if you have any questions.
  16. I know price is important but I'm sure many of us would never think twice about paying $35 for say, a Japanese reissue of some long forgotten recording by an artist we enjoy, even if it is not his best work. I think with recordings by the SF Collective, and ArtistsShare is another label that comes to mind, we should support the musicians and expect perhaps to pay a little bit extra for the privilege of listening to some terrific music. Everything is beautifully recorded and presented and I would think only sells in limited numbers, so unless we buy it, then ......what? In answer to Toms's question about the relative merits of the 2004 & 2005 SF Collective recordings, then my preference is for the original, 2004, collection. I think they handle Ornette's music well and they are such catchy tunes, but personally I prefer the original tunes by each of the band members.
  17. At least there's a copy of the original liner notes in English. Some of the Japanese reissues only have liner notes in Japanese!
  18. My father got this after I relayed Chuck's advice. He is very happy with it. Oh dear, does this mean that only 'old people', like me (and Chuck?), are buying it? This does not bode well for future sales! However, I suppose you have to be a certain age to even have any vinyl! Our drummer is buying it too. He is only 50! Only a child!!

  20. Mine's on its way. I'll report when I've listened to it.
  21. Here, as promised, are my experiences of installing/using the Xitel InPort: Ordered it last Saturday from www.beststuff.co.uk for £55. Not the cheapest price (by a few £s) but they agreed to ship immediately. Arrived tuesday & took about an hour to set up. I followed the 'idiot's guide' faithfully & there were no major problems. Played around with it for a few hours and then managed to tape four albums today; again, with no real problems. To my ears, the CD-Rs sound as good as the original vinyl and I'm really pleased with the results. So, thanks again to everyone, especially Chuck, who recommended it. By recording & then selling my remaining vinyl it should pay for itself in no time and I also have something now that I can use for taping radio broadcasts etc.
  22. Plus the additional shipping costs & possible customs duties. I'm getting mine from the UK
  23. What a great board this is! Thanks to everyone for your help & advice. I've decided to go for the Xitel Inport since that seems to do what I want & comes recommended by Chuck. It's also cheaper than the 'PhonoPreAmp iVinyl' so that's another point in it's favour! I'll let you know how things turn out.
  24. I have a large LP collection which I am gradually replacing by CD on an 'as and when' basis. However I have a number of LPs that I am sure will never be reissued on CD plus some that I quite enjoy but don't want to pay to replace by a CD. Therefore I'm looking for the best way of converting my LPs to CD using some hardware/software and my Windows XP computer. I don't want anything too complicated - who does? - but I'd like the finished product to sound good with gaps between tracks etc. Can anyone recommend something that does this and is easily available in the UK? BTW I saw in a newspaper today a very short review of something described as a 'PhonoPreAmpiVinyl' from a company called Terratec. It is a freestanding unit about the size of a cigarette pack and connects direct to a turntable, with another connection to a computer via the USB port. It does not require any drivers, sound cards or power supply, so seems very easy to set up etc. Does anyone know anything about this particular product?
