  1. BTW, I dibs this thread's title "Spotted Used" as a song title!
  2. I can't say I disagree with you, but it is cool to see the original. Well, then at least I have someone's complete recordings! I've been listening to this a lot lately, and it only enhances my opinion of all those involved. Especially Elmo Hope! Damn fine album.
  3. Oops!
  4. He HAS been looking a little thin lately.
  5. That's a great story, Allen. I'd have really liked to hear your band with Schoenberg and Lewis! Great players. Who else was in the band?
  6. My stepmother owns his X-mas album, which I have been told is considered by the music industry to be the best-selling jazz album ever. For my part, I don't own a single note. But I wouldn't mind owning his scalp! (Anyone know someone in the market for a curly mullet?)
  7. The oil companies? ← Don't get me started on that one. Bush is planning to release the strategic reserves to help out the oiil companies affected by the hurricane in N.O. Yet, according to all sources, this will have no effect on the price of gas to consumers. This pisses me off big time, and I don't even own a car! Hey Mr. Bush, isn't it the FRENCH who are supposed to take August off!
  8. But that's a classic! I sniff glue to it all the time!
  9. My first Mosaic was THE first Mosaic, #101, The Complete Blue Note Thelonious Monk. Back before they even had thought of issuing CDs. Man, do I feel old right now... I haven't sold a one of 'em... yet! (I may need to fund my retirement, after all.)
  10. 26 LPs... 37 CDs... More than any other artist in either format... But still nowhere near enough. Did anyone else record so much top-drawer music?
  11. Wow. I owe a few frinds in Manhattan a visit. Could be the perfect time to go!
  12. I've always had a higher tolerance for electric piano in popular music rather than jazz. All time favorite: Ray Charles -- What'd I Say. Centrifugal r&b! OH YEAH... HEY HEY... ALL RIGHT... MAKES YOU FEEL SO GOOD.... BABY SHAKE THAT THING!
  13. Some hip Santa there, Eric! I had to buy it for myself, but I'm glad for the ride, too.
  14. Boy, that makes me feel old. The first Mosaic I bought was Mosiac 101 -- The Complete Blue Note Thelonious Monk, back in the "early days."
  15. How about The Complete Mosaic? ....in whatever format exists in 2025.
  16. Teagrden was a great singer.
  17. Nothing wrong with a good scat passage, but when it goes on and on....
  18. Excellent record. Another one I'll have to pull out and listen to again. Thanks for the reminder.
  19. But I'd pay to see it!
  20. David Hajdu -- Lush Life Billy Strayhorn Bio
  21. Anything like At Swim Two Birds? ← As far as the antic humor goes, yes, but it's a collection of his newspaper columns rather than a novel.
  22. Steven Wright's version was my favorite. Whoopi Goldberg's version was actually funny! (A first for her from my point of view.) Sarah Silverman first person version was amazing and disturbing. After hearing the hype about it, I thought Bob Saget's version was disappointing, but filthy. As for the Gottfried version, my take on it is that you had to be there. A worthwhile movie if you have a liking/tolerance for baroque scatology and elaborate obscenity.
  23. Seems like there's plenty love for vocalists on this board. Most controversial are the white males: Chet Baker, Woody Herman, even Sinatra. I have to admit that I have trouble with the first (love his trumpet, however), can tolerate the second, and am a big fan of the third. Vocals can be an acquired taste, but one well worth acquiring. I am a fan of vocals, but take each singer on a case by case basis. Often, the most dated aspect of an old record is the vocal, and it can take a while to hear through period mannerisms to separate the great singers from the average to poor ones. With scat singing, a little goes a long way. Besides Ella and Louis, just about nobody can pull it off, certainly not at length. And vocalese can get annoying fast. Once you get past Bessie and Billie, is there any singer that everyone agrees on? (Maybe Aretha?)
  24. Must haves: Hill Select Pepper Select Farmer/Golson Also interested in: Dizzy Reece Select Pullen/Adams Select I haven't bought a Mosaic in a long time. (Last purchase: Weston Select)
  25. Perhaps the true answer...
