  1. Seriously, Who's Steve Hoffman?
  2. Both Cat People movies will be included on a single disc. But me for the box. We're talking (B-Movie) history, here!
  3. The Lewton boxed set, as I understand it, will have THREE movies unavailable separately, including one of my favorites:The Seventh Victim, which boasts a shower scene that anticipates Psycho by more than a decade.
  4. Holy shit.. ← That is some seriously fucked up shit. As Evis Costello said, "clown time is over..." What can we do to stop this?
  5. It WILL be fun, though, seeing the right-wing Christians and the Scientologists fight it out in the next presidential election... Assuming that the Mormons stay out of it. (Here in "Liberal" Massachusetts, in case you didn't know, we have a Mormon Governor! I often picture Henry Adams, among others, SPINNING in their GRAVES over this. Alnost makes it worthwhile... Almost....)
  6. So Spielberg's into Scientology, too? Or just surfing the wave of the future? Depressing either way.
  7. Sounds like another for the (increasingly lengthy thanks to you Organissimites) buy list.
  8. I think there's a typo in the thread title. Isn't it 'The Well-tempoed Clavicle?" Seriously, I love the Glenn Gould rendition, but I need to check out some of the other renditions here for perspective. [moderator's comment: the thread title has been corrected]
  9. Not so much scared as appalled. I'm sure that a lot of people on the list are not involved with Scientology but a lot of them are. It's disturbing that bright, talented people are taken in by these snake oil salesmen. ← Talented? Yes to maybe. Bright? I'm not so sure about that.
  10. I'm curious about that myself, Moose.
  11. Frankly, I think this "these things happen in threes" idea is a load of BS, more of a parlor game than a reflection of reality. But we humans like to use these thoughtlessly traditional templates as a frame for experience. Just playing the game.
  12. Is Howard Morris the elusive third in this case? From Slate.com: "John Fiedler, the voice of Piglet in Disney's Winnie the Pooh movies, died on Saturday. Fellow cast member Paul Winchell, who played Tigger, died the day before, and Howard Morris, the voice of Gopher in some early Pooh films, passed away last month. When a voice actor dies, what happens to his cartoon characters?" http://www.slate.com/id/2121686/
  13. Geez, when I saw the title of this thread I thought that somebody had finally found a surviving copy of the legendary, suppressed Coke commercial featuring Albert Ayler's version of "I'd Like to Teach the World To Sing."
  14. And how about this: Modern Library 100 Best non-fiction books of the 20th century, as voted by a Modern Library-appointed panel and by "readers." http://www.randomhouse.com/modernlibrary/1...nonfiction.html The "readers" list (surely not readers of Modern Library books?) is dominated by Ayn Rand and L. Ron Hubbard. Then check out the fiction list: http://www.randomhouse.com/modernlibrary/100bestnovels.html If you do, you'll see that "readers" favor the same two authors's novels. As Chuck Nessa might say: this gives me the heebie-jeebies.
  15. Review of Dianetics on Slate.com: http://www.salon.com/books/review/2005/06/...tics/index.html Part of a series of articles on Scientology's higher profile of late
  16. I may have to take the plunge on this.

    Anthony Braxton

I heard some of that Hill tribute on the radio a while back and it sounded GREAT! Thanks for reminding me. Another disc I need to get.
  18. Haruki Murakami's story in the July issue of Harper's Magazine begins with fairly extended discussions of personal experiences he's had related to jazz music, specifically attending a Tommy Flanagan gig (at the Regattabar in Cambridge, MA), and buying Donald Byrd/Pepper Adams albums. The story veers away from these topics pretty quickly, but it sounds like Murakami should be posting on Organissimo!
  19. And where's Norah Jones? The most important BN artist to current management.
  20. I wonder if there's someone out there, maybe SEVERAL of them, who have bought this and then thought to themselves "OK, I've got the best, now I can move on to something else."
  21. Agreed. And the early BN is arguably the most important era for the label.
  22. Well, they were thinking about it...
  23. You guys should work for Blue Note. Great choices. "Blues in Trinity" is indeed the first track on the album of the same title. An amazing tune. When I first heard it a few years ago it immediately leaped into my personal top 20.
  24. Happy Birthday!
  25. Yeah! Jimmy Noone and Andy Kirk! What do you all think of the Lunceford discs in this series? I'm trying to get this music in the most efficient way possible.
