  1. Hey it's not just me. Frarey was quoting someone who said they didn't like organists because they use those "homemade changes". I can make the changes anything I damn well please. That's the beauty of kickin' bass! That's the beauty of being an organist. Whatever changes you play, at least TWO guys in the band know what's going on, the keyboard player and the bass player ! That makes the guitarist sound like HE doesn't know what's up! I'm with Jim on the homemade changes!
  2. i'm sure it will be. it's an album that came out and nobody seemed to pay attention to it. it's really under the radar screen. ENJOY! and let me know how you liked it.
  3. great to see that the board is hooking up with the band! sounds wonderful, i'd LOVE to see ya'll, but we'll have to get you down to texas first! plus, everybody needs some tex-mex, pecan pie, bbq SOMETIME! You can hold out in Michigan much longer without it.
  4. I've mention this before. This is one of the BEST b-3 outings in the last 4 or 5 years IMHO. Get it, you won't be dissappointed.
  5. Yes, I'm a Blue Note addict. I'm an RVG addict. I'm a Conn. addict. I'm a Rare Grooves addict. My whole "jazz" life has been one big 'upgrade.' The first jazz recording I ever bought was Hank Mobley's "Workout" when Blue Note first reissued it on CD for the first time. I went out and traded all my rock albums in at the used bookstore and traded them for the remaining titles they had just gotten it. About 15 or so that included "Adam's Apple," "The Scene Changes," and "Sonny Rollins Vol.1" coincidently enough! But I WILL be buying the upgraded RVGs. My GOD, it's the BEST music ever made....so for $8.99 I think I'll just sniff the new packaging, dig the new liners, look at the pretty pictures and LISTEN TO THE BADDEST STUFF IN THE WORLD!!! Hey man, it's one of the simple pleasures in my life. And I mean the shit out of that. I've come to equate the beauty of Fall with new RVGs, the coming of summer with Rare Grooves, ect... Some think devoting yourself to the classic Blue Note era a little close minded or cliche'. And they're probably right. But that's where my heart is. Like any good thing, you always come back to it. Once my soul absorbs all the Blue Notes, I'll move on...but that might be a few million years.
  6. In case you haven't put this recording on in a while, do yourself a favor and do. If you're like me, you've forgetten what a gem it really is. What beauty. If you do take a listen, I'd love to hear your thoughts afterwards. For those who don't have it, I think it's OOP. Mine is a Conn., but it would be worth it to seek it out.
  7. Yes, that hospital quarantine biz really bites. On 3 separate occasions during the 2000-01 time frame my wife had to go in for a couple of days with rock-bottom whites and running a high fever but thankfully never picked up anything that necessitated the sort of prolonged stay that you've mentioned. So far we've managed to dodge that bullet during this second and ongoing round of chemo treatments (she was clear in '02 but the shit came back). Best of luck...hang tough & buy lots of cds! Weizen, my best goes out to you and your wife. But I thought Hank Mobley cured everything!
  8. I didn't realize what you were going through Mnytime. I wish you all the best! And remember, your friends here online miss you whenever you're away. So don't forget us for TOO long!!! Take care.
  9. You know, I'm not really a big fan of Joey's recordings. His output is tremendous, but rarely does it have much thought behind the sessions. Just blowing sessions for the most part, so if you have one, you pretty much have them all. So I was pretty wary of buying this one, but like Dan, Jeff Hamilton and Pat Martino really made me interested. Plus, I thought a singer would bring a different twist to Joey's usual proceedings. They joking made Pesci out as a real Philadelphia secret in the liners and ads. An unknown really worth discovering (wink wink). Well, I'm always into hearing a "discovered" rarely recorded older musician or singer. I fell for that b.s. I'm ashamed I fell for this scam. They should really be ashamed too. I'm sure Joey thought this was all good fun. Maybe in a club, but not for a 15 dollar CD. I've learned my lesson finally about Joey's CDs. Next time you're tempted to get one, buy a Charlie Hunter (or anything) instead.
  10. I couldn't agree more. Also, just hearing a jazz musician play the melody to a ballad seems increasingly rare. Man, hear Fathead Newman or Dewey Redman play a ballad...I love it when they play the melody, give another soloist some, and they're back with the melody. End of ballad. The End. I think ballads are an opportunity to bring everyone, musicians and audience, back to square one musically. It's a nice contrast to the rest of the set. Plus, they're really the best vehicle to express yourself emotionally imho. So they're fun to play.
  11. Like it's always been in jazz....play a ballad...that clarifies who's really playing up real quick. Also, if done right, a ballad will have the audience back with you every time. True emotion can't be ignored no matter how indifferent the audience. Next time you think you need a second, third or fouth funky tune to keep the audience's attention. Or another Coltrane tune to let people know how badass you are. Drop a ballad on them. I think you'll be surprised at the positive vibe you'll get back. Not to be preachy, especially since I'm no expert. Just something that's worked for me on occassion when I feel the audience drifting off.
  12. Man, not to get too indignent, but that FUCKIN' SUCKS! I plunked down GOOD money for that CD. As soon as I heard it, I knew it was a hoax. Problem is, the joke is on the unsuspecting consumer. I'm going to e-mail the record company and let them know how I feel about it. Like you would suspect, the band is good on the CD, but Peci is the star of the show and he can't carry the emotion to pull it off. Joe P., if you want to make a vanity record, put it on your own stinkin' label with YOUR name on it. I was pissed as soon as I put the thing on. Terrible.
  13. I haven't heard this yet, but I'm under the impression that Joe Doggs is actually Joe Pesci - who sings just like Little Jimmy Scott - and as far as I know is a New Jersey cat. Yeah, the whole thing's a gag. It's pechi for sure. On the inside jacket he's got huge sunglasses on (joey too, wink wink) but you can still tell it's joe p. Plus, his Jimmy Scott style singing wears thin like any amateurs would after one song. You can tell he's not a seasoned pro like the liners and Joey claim. I don't really dig the farce. I shelled out a few bucks for the thing and although the band's nice, it's pechi's album, and I wouldn't pay 15 bucks for that.
  14. I heard that! B)
  15. I've been diggin' flatfoot sam for years. matter of fact, long ago I was in a band that covered it! Great tune, and you're right that DRUMMING!!!!!
  16. Is there any way to "Pin" all the past AOWs in one place?
  17. The gig was great, so the flat tire didn't bum me too much. Funny how that works. A great gig can really make everything right with the world. Also, I've really been on a hot streak with drummers, playing with a couple of guys that really burn lately. How's it going with Organissimo Jim? Looks like by your calender, ya'll are keeping pretty busy.
  18. Wonderful choice Ed!!! We haven't done any Bossa stuff as of yet, plus I just recently picked this up and look forward to a chance to really listen deeply. I knew you'd put a lot of thought into it Ed, and you obviously did. Excellent group of recordings considered, but I think the Getz was the right choice for the reasons you stated. So, yes, now all you have to do is pick someone for the week after you and you're all set!
  19. Just got back from a gig tonight. On my way home when I got a blowout!!! Man, that tire went all the way flat in 2 seconds and I was riding on the rim. Pullin' the trailer with the organ and everything, changing the tire was bitch. And just 2 blocks from the house. Oh well, guess I'll be spending the gig money tonight on a new tire tommorrow. Needless to say I'm pretty tired. -_- That Scone disc is good. Matter of fact he cut the whole thing at the same time as the Ben Dixon date. I think they cut like 20 something songs all in one day.
  20. Kamuca can be seen "LIVE" in his prime on the Jazz Scene U.S.A DVD for "Shelly Manne/Shorty Rogers." He's amazing on it (as is the whole swingin' group with Conti Condoli sharing the front line). A GREAT DVD!!!!!!! Get it and see Richie blow!~
  21. Hey Jim, "Moon Rappin'" is an organ essential, don't leave home without it. Just tell your wife you're going out for some milk and bread and come back with "Moon Rappin."
  22. I saw Roy live a few years before his death. I actually had to leave (1st time I had ever left a concert), because his tone was EXTREME TREBLE. Piercing to the point of causing hearing loss imho.
  23. Hey Vibes, Thanks for going to the trouble to buy it. I'm glad you got it, and I don't think you'll regret the purchase. Can't wait to hear yours (and everyone else's) take on it. No "serious" listening required, just sit back and grooooooove.... (poolside or a night-time drive are both suggested summer listening times for this one! )
  24. Lou, Lonnie, Fukushi, and Randy are playing the Village Vanguard Thanksgiving week in November this Fall. It's not on the site yet, but Fukushi told me that was their next Vanguard date.
  25. B) Just kidding really. I know CDs are expensive to produce and manufacture, sell, ect. Just thought I'd throw it out there!
