When the Larry Young set came out, (much the way the Tina Brooks set...it was my first Mosaic set), I was blown away since most all of that material was virually unobtainable and I had never heard it. The problem these days is not much Mosaic has put out has really set me on fire the way those sets did. Although the music is great, it's mostly of CDs that have been readily available for the most part and I already have. the thrill is gone...

I'm indifferent when it comes to Wynton Marsalis' music. However, when it comes to his opinions.... It's such a turnoff when someone just knows everything, ESPECIALLY a musician. Isn't the point of making music to be free and to make you continuously grow? Is Wynton relavent anymore? I don't think anyone even cares what he says at this point. Jim's statement is well put, is it still 1980? That Plantation album he did seems like about the most misguided project ever. Roy Hargrove (whom I really dig) has a ton of respect for Wynton as a musician, so I'll take his work for it. But as far as his point of view on things... I think we can all agree, it's pretty lame.

People who have to be late

I think I was having a particulary bad day when I posted this thread. Didn't mean to offend anyone on a personal basis, especially my admittidly preachy last post! -
People who have to be late

The "late" thing to me is a...."look at me...I'm important..you're not, and aren't I cute" thing. It's childish and tiresome. Being a musician, I know the musician schedule and act accordingly...that is...nobody's gonna show up until 30 minutes after you've said so (if it's a rehearsal...paid gigs are different...the better the bread, the more people seem to show up on time.) But in everyday life, I've got things that HAVE to be at on time more or less. If I'm paying good money for a gymnastics class for my daughter and she misses 1/4 of her class every week because the pickup mom is habitually late...that's money down the drain for me. I don't work my ass of in bars so some beotch mom can be late and waste my money. I pick her kid up on time, she can do the same for me. A word to those on the board who admit to always being late.... Don't be...it's really a drag for everyone else and nobody thinks it's cute anymore. That's just the honest truth from those afraid or too nice to tell you so. -

I did lay it down for my friend today and the next time schoolmom does her running late routine, I think I'll put an end to the carpool. -
People who have to be late

There are some people I've known for years that just have to be late everytime....usually 10 minutes or 15 minutes. To somebody like myself who has a schedule that has to run like clockwork at certain times of the day, it's a major, major, major problem when I have to leave the house and the lady picking up my daughter isn't there and I have to take my son to his soccer practice, ect. Everyday it's the same old shit..."Oh, I'm running late..." Yeah, no shit like every other fucking day. -
I have two people in my life who's chronic and habitual lateness are really beginning to piss me off. I've known them both for years, but now my time is so scheduled that them being late all the time is really fucking up my life at times.. The first person is the mom of one of my daughter's friends. Our two girls do a lot of activities together, and this lady cannot EVER be anything but late. Rushing her ass off, freaking out and screwing everything up. The other is a musician friend who I at times do gigs with. He always insists on getting together before a gig (which isn't needed imho for the most part.) But he'll schedule to come over, say at 4 p.m., call me no less than 5-10 times thoughout the day, and then start updating me on the half hour of why he's running an hour to two hours late. I've about had it with both of these people and am about to say so to them both....

Ornette wins the Pulitzer
Soul Stream replied to Adam's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I saw Ornette play this last year at Bass Concert Hall in Austin. Seems to me Ornette has actually taken quite a clever path. Although it's taken decades to pay off. He must be getting very high dollar. All I can say is good for him.... Most musicans just wouldn't be willing to sit idle the way Ornette has done. And in the end, he's only playing the best places for the most attentive audiences (people seem to pay a lot more attention when they pay top dollar. -

Thanks, Chuck. Didn't know they history of it. Hopefully, more living jazz artists will receive this in the future. -
Nice writing. There are guys with the same life history and talent, out there playing every week to a handful of faithful. We don't really miss these guys until they're off the scene. Living jazz landmarks passed by countless times by the unknowing public at large. Marchel Ivery is another. Dallas legend and master musician...can't imagine the day I read about him passing on either.

Ornette wins the Pulitzer

I guess after reading the list of past "winners" of the Nobel Prize for music, I'm a bit confused. Special Citations for legends and spotty winners whom I've never heard of. Lots of winners for Music Criticism. Guess it's a more 'nobel' cause to criticize than create. Anyway, guess someone woke the judges up and told them a revolution happened 50 years ago with a guy named Ornette Coleman. -

Does anybody have a list of who else has won this in the past? I'm curious.... Anyway, great to hear! -
I always dug his playing with Jimmy Smith, whom he seemed to have played with a lot... Another great gone....

Wow, thanks for the recommendation! I've never heard that session. Doug Watkins is just one of my all time favorite bassists, and anything new I hear of his I just fall in love. Wonderful music, I'll have to pick that up for sure. Thanks!

I've always really dug these Prestige sides with Red and Paul Chambers and Art Taylor, ect. "Red Garland's Piano" is especially a favorite. And those things with Byrd and Trane are just out of this world. Byrd sounds so brassy and on fire on those things with Trane.... Anybody else have any particular Prestige Red album that hits a nerve?

I'm all for people that are honestly outraged by an incident like this. But there seems to be a lot of false outrage about it. We really get outraged alot these days with 24 hour news networks.

Phil...I think he plays into all that "baby" stuff and "my wife" stuff, and it saves him every week. Notice, he mentions something about his family after EVERY performance.... He's no dummy.

...guess she'll either be appearing at Disneyworld or in Playboy next year....or I guess she'll be making guest appearances on Larry King along with "Bucky"....ugg, the life of an ex-idol cut before the final 2.

Larry Goldings in a blond wig...very nice! I love when he picks the leaf off the tree and puts it in his pocket. Also, love his myspace page. The New Age-ing of Monk is something that must be done!
