Let's Reopen Old Wounds!
Soul Stream replied to JSngry's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I've mentioned this elsewhere, but I've really had it with genres. I used to keep my collection organized by genre, but I've dropped all such distinctions and let everything co-mingle. So, in answer to your last question, I don't think I would have a problem with a reunited Zeppelin recording for Blue Note... There's a record store here in town that refuses to seperate the CDs by genre. So you have to go from A-Z of every conceivable kind of music to "browse." There's a reason there are genres, because it's a practical application. Play me a record, and I could tell you a genre it belongs in. I don't care what people want to pretend. There ain't nuthin' new under the sun. No matter how genre-bending an album might be it still fits somwhere. Music is music at it's heart.... But Paleaaase, when I want to find something, give me a reference point. Blue Note is one of the greatest and only pure jazz labels in history. EMI is so big they could put any artist on any imprint...why does it matter to them. I think it just damages the brand, to put it in marketing terms which is, like it or not, what we're REALLY talking about here. It's not music to these people, it's product. -
Yeah...she's bad. Love her.... Take Five is one of the all time great organ sides.

I guess I don't understand why they put Al Green or Norah Jones on the Blue Note imprint. The label has a legendary jazz history...why muddy the waters? Al Green is the man...but can't the EMI umbrella find a more fitting label? Same with Norah.... I think that's really the issue here. If Led Zeppelin reunited under the Blue Note label, would that be cool? -
Wow...I didn't know "People" was still this much hated. It used to be such a cliche, but years have passed in such a way that I've come around to really liking this song. And yes,! I even love the lyrics~!!!!! I think the reason so many people dug this song is that the lyrics and melody and harmony really tell a story. I'm not sure how this song played in the Broadway show....but the idea that as someone without a partner seeing other people in love is a pretty timeless and meaningful basis for song. Nobody HAS to dig a certain song. I just wonder if sometimes we're tainted by a song's popularity and once it's been Bill Murray-fied if it can ever be seen again in the same light. I love the support Elvin and Larry give Grant on this cut.
-
I just have always really loved that cut on "Talkin' Bout." The way Grant delivers that melody is pure beauty. And I really do like that song, despite the fact that it has become a cliche'. Oh well...

"People" is one of those unexplainable tunes that folks choose to cover. Larry Young/Grant Green's version of people is absolutely one of my favorite organ cuts of all time. It actually is a great song in the right hands....

Somehow I had seemed to have missed this thread, but what a great gig and trip! Congrats ya'll! Not to be morbid, but one of the things I wanted to see while I was in Amsterdam was where Chet Baker fell to his death. I'm a huge Chet fan, and since the hotel where it happened was right across from the train station I basically stumbled upon it. Anyway, awesome gig you guys. That's great!

I like how immediately after Norah Jones won a Grammy and all of a sudden BN was in the spotlight.... They became understaffed to the point where they couldn't afford to maintain the forum. That's such a line of B.S.!!!! C'mon...I'm no conspiracy theorist. But please, any CEO worth their weight in Starbucks would know they don't want to offend the new 1,000,000 Norah Jones fans checking out the BN site only to find complete mayhem and "less-than-Norah-ecstasy" being spoken on their forums. Let's be realistic ya'll!!! Snorah Jones soccer moms and Hank Mobley freaks don't mix! Let's put it this way.... Now that they've sold a bazzillion Norah records....I guess they can hire an intern to watch and maintain a forum. Guess it'll be up again any day now.... -
From a guy that worked in a Pawnshop/Music Store growing up.... Never buy a new guitar. There are so many used guitars at better prices. One thing I learned about guitar players/owners, most guitars they buy don't automatically make them sound like Wes Montgomery (or Hendrix, or Van Halen or whoever).... so they quickly sell them and try again....and again...and again.

Wow, that's another thing you really find with the old timers. They KNOW that instrument inside and out. How to fix them and make them sound great in a relatively short amount of time. I wish I knew some of the little tricks they knew. I heard Jimmy McGriff did the same thing with the house organ at Antone's years ago before he played. Everyone said he made that organ sound great after whatever he did to it before the gig. Yeah, must have been great to play with her Randy. Contact with musicians like that really changes your mindset and attitude about playing music and the everyday problems they overcame to make it happen. Thanks for the story.

Does anybody know if "Mr. Shing A Ling" by Lou Donaldson has ever been issued as an RVG is Japan? If so, is it still available?
-
Anytime an engineer records something it's shaped by his sensibilities. That's why I think it's important for whoever originally recorded the material to master or remaster it. The chain is unbroken. The intent is always the same.

For a minutes I thought that organ player might be Lonnie....

As i said above about insecurity being ugly. Why is it that whenever someone expresses an unpopular opinion everyone must attack him and insist that "he's obviously an idiot?" Again, so what if he doesn't like jazz? I think when you go to extremes like "Coltrane and Miles suck". That's basically taking an unmusical approach to music. If I said B.B King Sucks, Jimi Hendrix sucks and James Brown sucks. Then I think it would be fair for you to question my musical judgement.... Personally, I think it's just rock and roll hype bull as usual. His record collection is probably all shit elvin jones is on....
-
I wouldn't disagree with you on that one at all. That record is just downright smoking. You couldn't find guys who could play like that today if you looked the world over. Truely a moment in time captured perfectly in RVG's studio. Fred Jackson...jeez...Grant's distorted tone...Ben Dixon's shuffle...and Face burning that unique sound of his into your eardrums.
-
yeah...her crowning achievement.
-
Yeah....Face (as he was called by other musicians)....was as bad as an organist that has ever lived. Face To Face and Grant's First Stand are just unbelievable. But everything he was on is a gem. The Argo's open up a whole other side and sound from his as well.
-
Shirley was certainly one of only a handful of legends of jazz organ. Her legacy is undeniable. Larry Goldings counts her as perhaps his biggest influence initially, and through Larry and those in the same stylistic bag...her style of organ is alive and well. Without her, modern organ playing just wouldn't have gone in the direction it has.

Chunks? If that's chunky to you then what type of girls do you like? Dude, Natalie Maines has been chuggin' some Ben & Jerrys for quite some time. Take away the high fashion black drape and you'd see.... It's all good and fine, to me though...they are just the most annoying group that ever existed. Record and song of the year....holy cow that record is crap...who bought that thing? And now they'll just be more and more pretentious....uggg...
