  1. O.K...picked this up (thanks for the 20% Borders coupon). Still listening...but...upon seeing the photos from the halfnote...Man, those guys played on THAT on THAT lil' ol' stage???!!!! I'll never complain about a club's setup again.
  2. I just bought a 60G ipod...now they keep coming up with improvements for the same money....
  3. How come I've seen "List" price on this vary from 18.99 to 24.99?!
  4. "As far as I'm concerned....." ← Thanks FFA. Now Jim, FU. You just cost me 20 MF dollars! (You start talking about screaming and shit and I'm all there)
  5. Are you talking about the Half Note gig? What's AFAIC? I'm I missing something here, or did I just get up too early after a late night gig.
  6. I don't dig people feeling they have a RIGHT to tape musician's live shows. To me, it comes from the same mentality that folks shouldn't have to pay a cover to see a band, hence the tip-jar mentality we live in today.
  7. The more I hear about this release, the more I think I'll save my 20 bucks. I'm sure there's some great stuff on there, but to be honest, I think I have plenty of Trane and unless it's earth-shattering, I think I'll just put on one of the 20 Trane CDs I already have...
  8. "The music washes away the dust of everyday life" is the Blakey quote from the Ben Sidrian audio book. And, congrats on the nice write-ups too guys!
  9. I like music. To me, rap is words plus beats...not music. And like Tony Randall said once in an interview..."I don't like Rock and Roll because it's just so...monotonous." I know I'm getting old because I feel the same way about rap. I think rap developed in part because as a society, we quit stressing music in school. Lack of free instruments and instruction in lower income schools helped bring about the rise of rap. Some pretty ingenious shit imho, "Oh, we don't have instruments, we'll just rhyme over a record." But, musically speaking, it's a pretty dead end road. Being the pervasive musical idiom these days that infiltrates all genres..pop, jazz, country, everything....it's a drag for me. Drum beat techno-bore. The last good rap record to me was The Digable Planets 1st record. Shows you what a square I am. *edit addition-Kanye West is supposed to put an end to my way of thinking. Saw him on Saturday Night Live and couldn't tell why he was supposed to be any different than everyone else.
  10. ...and probably John Coltrane while you're at it...
  11. Yeah, I agree. I'm more excited by the Selects these days than the legit box sets they put out.
  12. Great bit, I actually remember hearing that before growing up. Didn't know it was Bill Murray! Great stuff.
  13. In truth, I think about a lot of things when I play, including... -what song am I playing next, what does the set (audience) need now musically... -what song I'm playing now -what's on the t.v. by the bar -this audience is great, good, sucks or doesn't exist -this band is great, good, sucks or doesn't exist -music -dinner -I wish musicians could rehearse -why is my equipment breaking and can I make it till the end of the show -how do the masters make this seem so easy -why did I wear this shirt -it's hot in here -it's cold in here -I wonder if I'm getting a parking ticket at this moment -and about 1,000 other things, some musical, some not.
  14. Yeah, but that horn section! Out-o-tune.... Never been a fan of that band, especially considering...I love the show.
  15. What's Musicmatch and how do I use it? I'm a total idiot on the computer...
  16. I know one pitfall many, many, many musicians of all genres fall into is...."I don't want to copy anybody, I'm going to be completely original." That might work for the .000000000001 percent of musical geniuses out there (maybe not even for them either), but it's a nowhere road and a lazy man's way out (no pun intended) for the majority. Even Albert Ayler was called "Little Bird" and also had serious blues dues with Little Walter and others.
  17. Will Lee
  18. Yeah, A Night In Tunisia gets so boring after while...
  19. There are no short cuts in music, that's just the plain, hard truth. Learn from the basics up...skipping and jumping ahead will just lead to future frustrations....just from experience...
  20. You can't really play "out" until you know how to play "in" is what my ears tell me.
  21. Jim, is this another Dorn enterprise? Or is there another label just reissuing Label M?
  22. Thanks for all the great help. Would like to contact Dorn as he seems to have gone through most, if not all, of the Left Bank tapes. If the Patton/Green concert were recorded, perhaps he has already heard it.
  23. Bertrand, Thanks for the spirited reply. Sounds like you've been involved at a fairly active level in pursuing these left bank tapes. Somehow I KNOW there are John Patton tapes out there from the 60's SOMEWHERE. The left bank seems like a good lead since they recorded, and Patton/Green played there during this time frame. I'd love to e-mail Dorn, anybody got an e-mail on him?
  24. ...up...somebody....there's a tape out there somewhere...
