  1. Sorry Cali....I changed my original thread title to what I MEANT to say... That is Wynton Kelly!(the vee jay lp).
  2. I've fallen under the spell of this record recently in a SERIOUS way. This may be one of the greatest trio recordings ever and certainly a gorgeous example of what made Wynton Kelly my favorite pianist. Anybody else have a facsination with this album?
  3. Let's hope every American buys this CD. It might change the world.
  4. Overstock.com says they have this In Stock for 73 bucks I think.... I don't know anything but that.
  5. That's fairly ironic in retrospect. ← I've mentioned this before, but I think Jimmy Smith might have had more of an impact on Coltrane than most would care to imagine. In this sense, listen to Groovin At Small's Paradise by Smith and tell me who else had that concept on ANY instrument at the time. Coltrane came closest later, and Jimmy eventually honed his style down quite a bit. But in the mid-50's, Trane and Jimmy played together and, to my ears, Jimmy was playing "sheets of sound" before Trane was....
  6. Coltrane was in Jimmy Smith's group in Philly for a while. Trane even talked about it, saying Jimmy's playing of the organ "kept him up at night, all them notes screaming" or something to that effect. Can't remember the direct quote.
  7. ...no, I thought all the liners were lame except for the "So What" guy and Ira's comments. The rest were just adding nothing.
  8. Pure speculation on my part... a runaway murderer, crystal meth, lifting of the shirt to show your drink-induced scars...a BJ's gotta be in that mix somewhere.
  9. This is really one of the best jazz recordings of all time. Trane and Monk sound as good as they ever did with anybody and then some imho.
  10. ...and that's the REST of the story. (as Paul Havey would say) And I guess she left out the B.J. part too. ...also, never thought of Crystal Meth as a "calming" agent.
  11. After watching this video, how come I get the feeling BN was having to fight with T.S. Monk not to f this thing up....
  12. Man, you guys are getting an awesome tour lined up. Congrats!
  13. Gotta check out some of his more recent stuff. Saw him once with (and once without) two sax players and it made a huge difference imho. Great horn lines like you mentioned and spirited playing from both. It's been years since I've checked his stuff out and will again soon. Thanks for the endorsement Jim. I don't take that recommendation lightly....
  14. Who teaches everyone at Berkley School Of Music? That's who they all sound like... They're all so good now, they're back to being bad.
  15. He's also Jac Holzman(the founder of Elektra records)'s son. ← Sounds like a fly in the ointment.
  16. Jim, why do you think Hunter is a genius? Not a jab, just curious as to I've never really been drawn to what I've heard him do that much.
  17. Just picked it up. One of the all-time greatest sessions ever. Sound is really nice except the drums are too hot especially the annoying bass drum. Music-A plus. Cover-my grandma did it on her new computer.
  18. I can't believe the Cellar Door thing might be legally stopped at this point. The money involved in producing and promoting that product up until now has got to be quite big. Going to be a big shot of disappointment heard round the world if it doesn't come out.
  19. Austin turned out to be the opposite of a Hurricane....dry and 107 degrees...breaking all records lately. Wierd.
  20. I would bid but I'm buying Miles' cigarette butt from Gary Giddens for $10,000.
  21. Yeah, I'm "not listening" right along with you. I mean, why listen to Botti play "My Romance" when Gene Ammons is just a play button away. That's my constant problem with almost all recorded "new" music no matter how good (or bad) it is. I mean, to be honest, I've been listening to the same 50 "personal jazz favs from the 50's and 60's" albums almost exclusively for 10 years! Botti or Hargrove...ya know...Miles still wins.
  22. OK, so the guy is competent in a straight-ahead context. But a "Giant"? Shouldn't that term be reserved for those who shaped the entire course of jazz as a musical form? Armstrong was a giant. Was King Oliver a giant? Yes to Jelly Roll Morton. Certainly to Ellington. Parker, definitely. Gillespie, arguably. Monk, Yes. Mingus... qualified yes. Coltrane, yes, for better or worse. Thought experiment: was Roy Eldridge a "Giant"? Who alive today is a "Giant"? Rollins, perhaps. Jackie McLean is a great player, but a "Giant"? Not so sure. So, then, how do Sanborn and Botti compare to McLean? To, say, Metheny, for godsakes? Some people need to learn how to talk. ← I certainly wouldn't dare call him a "giant", "legend" or even a good straight-ahead player (I wouldn't know). However, I think sometimes it's easy to lump all these people together when there certainly might be distinctions between guys like Botti and Connick vs Kenny G and that kind of thing. Is Harry Connick going to be on par with Jackie McLean? No, but these are all apples and oranges. I just think jazz boards with guys listening to Albert Ayler records are going to be pretty predictabley hard on Chris Botti. It's a real easy target.
  23. I was wondering if anybody could post a list of the discography of the Wynton Kelly/Paul Chambers VeeJay Mosaic box. Thanks in advance for any help...
  24. The Nude Bomb! Now that IS a blast from the past.
