Just wanted to bump John up and remind everyone to put on some Big John if at all possible. It's always good for the soul. One I've been listening to tonight that has a lot of nice later compositions by John is "This One's For J.A." on the DIW label recorded in the 90's. Great band and a great album that doesn't get as much attention as it should. Also covers Trane, Archie Shepp, Wayne Shorter and Grachan Moncur III...don't know any other jazz organist that's compositions could fit seemlessly with those other writers. Great album.

Does anybody else find Larry's wife extremely hot? I usually don't bring this sort of stuff up on the forum, but....

Curb Your Enthusiasm on DVD tomorrow (1/13)!
Soul Stream replied to Big Al's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
My wife absolutely HATES this show. She's a T.V. Primetime Head (E.R., Westwing, Desperate Housewives...all that crap), she say she can't stand the unconventional sense of dialog (I think much of it is improv, or maybe just great writing and informal delivery). But I love it for just that reason. I mean, I just watched a new episode this week where Larry invites a neighborhood sex offender to a holiday gathering because the guy was a big Seinfeld fan and also helped Larry with his golf swing. THAT is some great stuff. -
Listenin' to Bird on Tiny Grime's "Red Cross".... so Clyde Hart starts playing and is killing. Who is he?

Why? ← Well, Cuscuna and Beldon are nice dudes, but not that nice. With all the dough piled into this project, promotion, ect...SOMETHING is going on. Miles' estate, no matter how misguided, is holding some cards that we may not know about. Otherwise, this stuff would have been out. I'm no attorney, but the estate must have control/say over something Columbia has/wants in the future. Columbia wouldn't withhold the release just because of stickers, packaging to please some dude who doesn't affect them one way or another. Like it or not, Miles' estate has SOMETHING to do with what's going on with future releases. There's no other explanation.
-
Seems to me they have to keep a good relationship with the estate for future projects. If this were a "one-off," this would have been put out already with the lawsuits and pay-offs coming afterwards. However, Wilbur's making those guys do the dance, which is a drag. I think Columbia would be better off just to put it out and show Wilbur they aren't going to placate him to this degree. Sometimes you have to hit a bad dog with a wet newspaper.

Great article Dan. Lou doesn't pull punches and I agree with him 100%.

Great drummer. I'll put on Free Slave, his great solo record and listen a while. He was wonderful with Horace Silver's group.

I LOVE trees. And always wish I had more in my yard (no matter where I've lived). When I moved north of Boston, I noticed the house we bought didn't have ANY trees on the lot, as opposed to all my neighbors who had 30 foot high pines surrounding their houses...."Oh, I cut down 30 huge pines last Spring and cleared the area. Ain't it great!" said the previous homeowner. Some folks just don't GET it,...life, music, leafy yards and TREES...those things make life worth being around for.
-
There are two kinds of people in this world... 1. People that excessively trim and, eventually, cut down every fucking tree in their yard. 2. People that dig trees and let them grow and be trees. The first kind of people always live next door to the second kind of people. My next door neighbor asked if he could "trim" my magnolia tree as it was getting leaves in his pool. Next thing I know I have a 4 foot high stump. No fucking kidding. I 'bout shit my pants. a 20 foot high beautiful mature Magnolia in my FRONT yard cut down. Fuck all neighbors that want to trim your shit.

Great article. Thanks for sharing. Also, wonderul story from Brownie. Brownie, did you ever see him play in a club environment in Europe? Also, would love to hear these Montremarte tapes. They must not be too rare as a several posts allude to hearing them. Mobley's story is all too common. Echoes my recent conversation with Hank Crawford, who's only played 3 times in the last 2 years he said. Some of it's due to some health complications. The other reason is, in his words..."No clubs to play in. The scene is clean." John Patton had the same problem. I talked to George Braith last week and was lamenting his lack of work. His words..."Hey, it doesn't bother me. I play 10 sets a day in my basement."

Noj, I've heard that before from local Funk 45 Nazis, but these little groups never live up in totality to the big names. I'm not saying there were not good bands. The Texas Funk comp. is a good example of that, but as good as Sunny & The Sunliners are, they weren't the JBs or The Meters. As good as Jimmy Dawkins is, he ain't no Buddy Guy, ect. There's a reason the best are the best and most widely recorded. There are some interesting obscure funk 45's no doubt (hey, Gabe Roth from Daptone has made a career off the obsession with this stuff), but this condition of the Funk 45 Collector is getting ridiculous. We are scraping the bottom of the vinyl barrel imho. Put on "Sex Machine" and be done with it! But to each his own
-
I've found the majority of even the best funk 45 comps less than worthy. Ya know, there was areason the JBs and the Meters were the best! Some stuff, yeah, great and different. But mostly it's just for guys who collect and collect and collect until they're satisfied they've got the most obscure shit in the world of funk...regardless of what the music's about. This Dutch 45 funk comp. just sent me over the edge. Aren't we done with this yet?!

O,K...now that the crate diggers of the world have exhausted all plausable groove compilation ideas....we finally get the hype from the bastards about this crap. Wish I could recite the bogus hype that DG conjurs up for this thing, but read it for yourself on their site...
-
Boy talk about a cover killing what truely lays inside! Got this from the bastards today and this is one of Groove's heaviest funk sides! There's to orchestrated pieces that are lame (the 6 Million theme and another movie theme), but the rest is small group with Chuck Rainey on bass. Pretty badass stuff. And the LP reissue is gatefold with some nice liners by Nat Hentoff.

Thanks Joe! I can tell you that we heard you fine this time. Last time at Baker's, it seemed your amp was not turned up loud enough, but we heard you digging real good (even with Randy's loud drumming.) ← When the the groove starts poppin' & hoppin' I get into the passion of the music and the moment and build the intensity.. The best shows I have ever attended have had dynamics, with drummers that can effectively play from PP (double pianissimo)- FFF (triple forte) .. The use of dynamics I think is what makes music interesting. Thanks again for coming Paul. Your presence and enthusiasm is always an inspiration. ← Yeah, after I read that first post about "Randy's loud drumming," I was wondering what Randy's response would be. Nothing pisses a drummer off more than saying he's too loud. ← I do sometimes play loud though.... Loud and proud ← ...I get the feeling Organissimo has a very balanced sound between the 3 of them on stage. The core of what they're all about seems to be interaction. But, many times....we who are in bands have to field the same allegations...."such and such (insert band member/instrument here)" is TOO LOUD. Many times that's a P.A./Soundman problem. Or the person complaining is sitting right next to said instrument. That said, some band members (usually bass players from my experience) ARE too loud. -

Dude, weren't you wearing that at Baker's last night?

...Now just 200 more posts and we might listen to something you say!!!! That's phenomenal!

Have you noticed T.V. Shows don't have theme music anymore. I saw a report on T.V. that it was too expensive. Too bad, there were a lot of classic ones, albeit not too many good ones after the 70's...
-
How can you go wrong. Our good friends at DG come through again bringing us a combination we can't refuse... Groove Holmes and the Theme from the T.V. show 6 Million Dollar Man. NOW I know the reissue vaults have been cleared to the bone...

He also backed up Irene Reid on a Highnote CD and it's pretty cool. For me, some of the Muse compilations such as The Almighty Burner and Organimically Correct are great too. Also on Highnote, Cookin With The Mighty Burner is great with Alexander and Rotondi... ...lots of good stuff with Earland to be had.

Yeah, I can see why you think she plays so good...
