  1. Just another word for the music profession.
  2. Cool Jim. Would love to know if he's still around and active, or just plain around. Thanks. I managed to register on Houstonjazz and post a question on his whereabouts, I'll let you know if I get a response.
  3. I used to go see The Fringe when I lived in Boston a few years back. Now, to me at least, THAT was free jazz. Jazz freely played. Beautiful. Garzone is a master and monster. HARD to believe GETZ was his hero!!!!!

    Buddy Guy

No doubt. But will someone tell him...hey, you don't NEED to do that anymore. Maybe in the 80's. But I think these days people are little more hip.
  5. Really? Have no idea about ANYTHING.... Jim, you GOTTA love his stuff on Bus Ride.
  6. John Manning played Tenor on a couple of Soul Jazz masterpieces...Reuben Wilson's "Blue Mode" and Melvin Sparks "Sparks." That was it... He really blows one of the FUNKIEST and OUT solos on Wilson's "Bus Ride." That solo kills me. I mean that cat was playing on a Blue Note funk date and he took that mutha out. Yet, really kept the funk flavor. Beautiful. He had a nice thing. But like so many, seems to have disappeared. Anybody ever hear of him?

    Buddy Guy

Too bad his live shows have degenerated into crowd-pleasing cliches. Been like that for a long time now.
  8. Maybe you hit upon why it's still so good Peter. The playing and arranging are just top-notch. Stuff like that never goes out of style.

    Buddy Guy

Wow! Man, he has aged a bit. Guess he had to sometime. Anyway, for a glimpse of the BADDEST Buddy you'll ever actually SEE...check out the new music DVD Music Express. It's a pretty cool documentary about a Canadian music festival that travelled by train in 1970. Buddy's on the damn thing and KILLLLLS with his great version of 'Money'. He even takes his 200 foot cord and walks into the stadium audience which is no small feat. His singing and guitar playing are SUPERB. Plus, he's so damn skinny with a short fro and killer muddy water's style moustache. This maybe the best documented blues performance ever imho. Killer Chicago backup band that includes AC Reed and Phil Guy with a wah (don't let that scare you purists it's very background).
  10. To me, the term "Acid Jazz" is already more dated and silly sounding than the older, more traditional Soul Jazz moniker. Why? Because Acid Jazz says absolutely nothing about what the music really is. Acid Jazz sounds like it should be psychedellic jazz, which it's not. Never a fan of Acid Jazz, too lightweight for my tastes. I'd rather hear the real thing...Soul Jazz.
  11. Glad to see this is up for air. Now that people have had time to let this sink, wonder what people have discovered. Still one of the most interesting and downright singular organ records ever made. However, it's no novelty...even though it surely is "of it's time." On the traditional side Jack KILLS on "Swedenin'". And when they start swinging that first track, Jack is all over it, playing some straight swing stuff that would make Jimmy Smith's head spin. Thanks for bringin' the thread back up!
  12. Pretty wild story.

Yes, that Jazz Casual is a mind-blower! It's a must-see for even a casual fan like myself
  14. That was the 2004 schedule. Oh...O.K> that makes sense. I'll have to make a call and let my buddy know I was givin' him some wrong info...
  15. I bought it at the Jazz Record Mart a couple weeks ago and the recording is on Delmark (they are one and the same); I guess that's why they have it early. Mark So how is it Mark? Any thoughts yet on it?
  16. Hmmmm. I must have missed something. This board, to me at least, is the best, most polite and informative board around for my money. Same today as it was 2 days ago or a year ago. Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater here. Civility is hallmark of this place, let's get back to that and treat others as we'd like to be treated ourselves. Pluss, maybe we should get back to a few more jazz discussions and forget about what we were all fighting about. Jim, Joe and Randy are great guys. Let's not bum them out like some bad mayonnaise in the refrigerator.
  17. Where did you get this schedule? The site only shows up through April or May I think. I'm curious because I was just passing on the info to one of the musicians who's suppose to play and he thought the slot was earlier in the month and wanted to verify... Thanks...
  18. Ah, but what about the non-turban occassions?
  19. Damn! come 7/4, you know you can slip on by for a doctor's visit! Sorry about the name confusion, but I REFUSE to call that place Dizzy's ClubCoca-Cola . That's friggin' sacrilidge, I'm so goddamn sick of corporate sponsorship.
  20. I'd love to hear a rundown of the show if anybody has a chance to make it. Wish I could be there. Also, Lonnie's student Akiko Tsuruga (along w/Fukushi Tainaka and Eric Johnson) is playing the afterhours set after Lonnie every night. Love to hear her as well, she plays piano w/Grady Tate and is roomates w/Lonnie to boot, so she's GOT to be smokin' on the hammond! Hope someone catches it.
  21. O.K...I'll say it...never been a big Marvin fan... although I completely understand his legendary status as a musical genius. His brand of "modal soul" never really caught my ear and his voice is just a little to "light" for my tastes. I know, I suck.
  22. No, and SS1...I hate to tell you this, but you're signature is getting annoying.
