  1. Indeed...these live concerts were taken on 28th may 1965 and 20th november 1968 at the Salle Pleyel in Paris. The first date (2cd's) featured Quentin Warren and Bill Hart, while the last one showed Nathan Page and Donald Bailey. Jimmy Smith plays loads of notes and is very energetic, high voltage I would say, but, after listening these discs for a while, one feels some cuts or editing would produce a greatly enhanced performance : frankly, some tricks can easily pass in concert but become a bore after 2 or 3 repeated listenings. I have seen this week in Rome these 3 CD's as a boxed set, just back in print as a europe 1 production, so they should be easily available by now. While I confirm I still like this set, I would definitely recommend for live performance the RVG set 'Groovin' at Small's Paradise'.For me , one of the very best Smith performances ever...
  2. I was pleased to come across a 2 CD compilation from 1997 called "The Very Best Of S.M. and Brasil 66". This has been released in the U.K. and also in Europe, I think. It is available from U.S. suppliers as an import. Could you please give the cd reference...I was unable to track it here...T hks

  4. If you like Beethoven's 7th, I'll recommend the following Idil Biret Beethoven 7th transcrition by F.Liszt EMI check her website www.idilbiret.org Cyprien Katsaris idem on Teldec +Schumann's Variations upon a theme from Beethoven's 7th (Largo) All are top flight piano transcriptions of extreme virtuosity AND musicality I'll certainly keep an eye upon this Loussier issue...Thks for the tip...
  5. Hi Marcus, Could you tell us more about the new Jacques Loussier CD ?
  6. Nothing to add to these excellent advices...However bear in mind ALL the CDR blanks have an optimum burning speed which lays usually between 4x and 8x.Professional CDR like Mitsui's usually give this value, but well known commercial brands are very close. You would spare a lot of blanks by limiting the burning speed to 8x...
  7. 'Right...but how much RAM does this damn' new thing use...?
  8. I'll admit it : it's been almost 2 years since I barely bought a couple of CD's in a shop in Belgium or Luxemburg. My regular suppliers are now Djangomusic.com and CDuniverse, sometimes less well known (to me) on-line sellers I find in the Amazon.com used CD's dpt. Main reasons for this are : lower costs, even including shipping , much wider choice, including used OOP cd's, a chance to hear a selection of the contents of the disc etc...I can't remember one item I couldn't find online, except Stop and listen on CD from Japan. Usually, package arrives within 6-10 days, which is acceptable but it took sometimes 4 or 8 weeks also.It even got lost a couple of times but in both cases I was immediately refunded without fuss (Djangomusic and CD universe). Once also I had to ship back a faulty disc and was refunded for it, shipping costs included... The only drawback is I liked to browse to the new and used cd's bins in large shops like HMV in London or Saturn in Köln or Cactus in Luxemburg Back to the Larry Young Mothership : now that copy controlled CD's and unspoiled US copies are simultaneously on the market, would anybody care to "invest" in a copy of each and have a very carefull and critical listen...?I am genuinely interested in having your opinions, since I have none on the subject..
  9. can't even send an email or PM.How should I gfet in touch with a member?
  10. Credit where credits due my man. Sent that slippery-er than silicone wafer to SS1 ways back and glad to see he's hefted it to someone most appreciative. That Lytle stuff is killer. You should grab the real-deal off of Dusty. Worth every penny. And even more kudos to MikeB who painstakingly clued me into a bulk of Johnny's post "Loop and Groovy" LP sides. Been discovering a select few more Lytle tidbits as of late but unfortunately his cannon is in need of some serious merkin swabbin'.
  11. Possibly a few tracks by Shirley Horn from 'A tribute to Ray Charles Also, some tracks on various Rhoda Scott albums : but yes, she's not really a singer, is she? Julie Driscoll with Brian Auger and The Trinity -Street Noise
  12. One of my very favorite organ CD : Papa John DeFrancesco's Hip Cake Walk... Not only are the players top notch (Melvin Sparks, Bootsie Barnes) but, above all, i find the music selection especially attractive : The Cat, Moanin, Song for my Father, Milestones...Why don(t we find more Cd's filled with that kind of tunes..?Really hot stuff, IMHO

  14. A great pity to read, although I'm not too surprised...I work mainly in the classical music field and it is very common to rate artists by the number of albums released by some majors, such as Deutsche Gramophone or Decca or Sony .Being part (or not...) of the gang may have a definite influence over the public appearances an artist makes (recital, concert with orchestra, chamber music) and of course his discography...but I had no idea this worked in soul jazz. Back to McGriff, I fully agree most of his nicest works appeared in the last decade for Milestones ; I knew he was playing an XB3000 , just like Rhoda Scott did for a while, though she's now back to her faithfull B3.Listening to this particular machine doesn't strike me as very different : maybe the total sound image is somewhat cleaner, more clinical, perhaps. Did any of you hear the NW B3 (digital)?I heard some samples of the Tony Monaco-Joe DeFrancesco album Paesanos, but yhat's too short to buid an opinion.Does it sample the sound before going into the Leslie, or is this one simulated as well..? Anybody heard it thoroughly?I'm curious
  15. From a strictly musical point of view, ring modulators are just another way of adding trash to the audio...You might get a rather similar results by using misaligned tubes, a worn stylus (for LP,s of course) or simply dropping your loudspeakers form a height of at least 2 metres...Enjoy
  16. Relieved there are some McGriff enthusiasts around here... To my knowledge, there are 3 milestones records, two with Hank Crawford (Road tested and Soul Survivors) and one with Dave newman (Dream Team) .Do you know any others? Also, would be great to have more details about that Groove Merchant compilation : afraid my amex is going to get another hard time...
  17. I cannot remember having read recently any post about Jimmy McGriff in the various jazz forums we know. Why is that? As far as I know, McGriff discography is prolific enough and of high quality, especially in the last ten years. The sessions he cut with Hank Crawford, among others, are exceptionally rewarding : good program, played with enough excitement, excellent sound, excellent partners like Bernard Purdie, Red holloway, David Newman etc... Regarding the music played, it is true to be rather bluesy or soul jazz oriented : but then so are Jack McDuff, John Patton and others.Technically, McGriff is certainly up to par with any of the stars everybody talks about, like JOS, Don Patterson, Jo DeFrancesco, then what...?Shall we discuss only bop players? Would anybody have comments or views about this ?I'm really looking forward to read from you all guys.
  18. No, unfortunately...I expect that switch would have solved the problem.I used a very common DI box that was loaned to me by another engineer. That put, provisionally, an end to my DI experience, but I'll certainly get back in touch with your friend. Up to now, results are not up to expectations : another limiting factor is the interference of the club PA system, which sounds far from satisfactory : so what I'm trying to set up is a Hammond + guitar and drums trio in a quiet, medium reverberant place, where I'll have all the time I need for experiment.I keep in mind an early Jim Anderson recommendation for BK4007 mics standing very high level pressure..The only remaining problem is : find the suitable organ player...Pity you live so far away, Jim...
  19. I hope that Eddy Louis is one of the 5, nobody seems to mention him. I said "top five" without really thinking about it ... Don Patterson, Melvin Rhyne, Larry Young are definite choices. Maybe I should have said top three. I also dig Rhoda Scott, Larry Goldings, Sam Yahel, Jeff Palmer, the newer Lonnie Smith sides, the early Groove Holmes Pacific Jazz sides ... some Charles Earland, well, some of all of them, but the three are my heroes. I dig Eddy Louiss, have all of his trios with Kenny Clarke and the ones with Jean-Luc Ponty - where else do we get an organ trio with violin! these are great!" But his later stuff with synths leaves me cold. I recommend you also try , in the serie Jazz in Paris, the CD Bohemia after Dark.Eddy Louiss is assisted by Jimmy Gourley, Guy Pedersen and Kenny Clark
  20. Glad this one was selected as AOW : I searched my cd vault and found a copy buried in a pile of 'waiting to be listened' After one casual listening, I really enjoy this cd : full of music and melodically satisfying...at last, one can find here more than the worn out riffs and clichés that marr so many jazz organ performances.Nice developments by Grant and superb comping by Larry...On the minus side, I regret Bobby H.is somewhat laid back, both in the balance but also musically : I feel he's just there to add some coloured and unusual blend to this particular sound. Excellent and rewarding CD, but still my preferred choice for this instrumental set up would remain Freddie McCoy on Prestige (Lonely Avenue) By the way, wouldn't this Street of Dreamsone really deserve a RVG treatment?
  21. Try the latest Sound Forge or, better Samplitude 7.01 If you want a freeware, the best one would be Exact Audio Copy, but check the indexing facility is present (I would think yes)

  23. I preordered it : never got my hands onto a Mosaic set and this John Patton looks as good an opportunity as any.I still have the original LP Along came John, totally worn out and one Cd Let them roll... Would anybody recommend additional purchase of John records? I believe I also have aCD recorded/produced by Jim Anderson : sound quality is magnificent but I don't like the music too much...Any thoughts..?
