  1. A worthwile add-on to this serie would be the Acid Jazz CD "Spicy". Actually a compilation of 2Lp sessions, Living Soul and Spicy, this is the first part of the Basie's Bandstand cd released a few months ago. As for the session with the Gerald Wilson Orchestra, I felt it good enough to buy the whole Mosaic set, probably one of the very best Groove performances ever. By the way, the track Blues for Yna Yna with Gerald finds a very nice trio treatment in Living Soul
  2. I would go for the BW...As you noticed, they are NOT forgiving and I bet the harsh, nasty sounds you heard came from your HK amp, faithfully reproduced by the BW. I use BW speakers for monitoring and mastering (801) but I also use smaller ones on location (DM602 or 603) and they give a smooth, creamy sound, with natural bass. Now they're powered by a Krell KSA100 , but I also use on location a Denon PMA100M (around 250€) and get a perfectly acceptable sound from that cheap combination. I use them mainly on classical music(piano) or jazz organ..and frankly, unless you are prepared to spend a lot more bucks, i can't see better solution in that price bracket. But now of course, these suit MY ears and not everybody else's...
  3. I'll second that one. Great stuff here!
  4. Thanks , guys, for your infos...I'm glad to see all the tunes of the album 'You Better Believe it 'are included in the Mosaic set, I 'll rush to order my copy. Regarding the 'Taste of honey', Chuck is probably right : I remember (but can I still trust my memory after this?) I read the original review in DownBeat and the Lloyd Mayers LP was reviewed in the same issue. Many thanks again
  5. This excellent set is supposed to include all of the sessions performed by Gerald Wilson, notably for Pacific Jazz.Howe'ver, I see only 3 tracks coming from the original album (published in 1962?) "You Better Believe it" featuring Richard Holmes as solist. I remember this LP to include something like 10-12 tracks, a.o A Taste of Honey. Does anybody know what happened to this missing material?
  6. Excellent balance indeed.Your basement sounds magnificent...or you used very good mikes : can you tell us more about it? Thanks again and have a merry Christmas
  7. Aargh..I suppose you just want to cut the cost s...otherwise why mono...?
  8. YES, great idea...Let me join to wish a happy birthday to the man who introduced me first to the Hammond... I still remember, 40 years later, my first Jimmy LP Crazy Baby, probably one of his best.Still listening to it today...
  9. I'm just re-reading Michael Lydon's book 'Ray Charles Man and Music' and would like to get as close as possible to the original releases by Atlantic and ABC,as discussed in the book.Evidently a difficult task with the infinite layers of reissues and compilations on the market... Although the 50 years album sounds excellent, it lacks most of the tunes of the original Genius+Soul=Jazz, which is a great pity... Therefore, I feel I'll go for these albums I found in the Djangos' on line store and appear readily available : Genius of Ray Charles Birth of the Soul -Complete Atlantic recordings 1952-59 Genius Hits the Road ABC Live (Newport 58 + Atlanta concert year ?) Genius+Soul=Jazz with the bonus album My Kind of Jazz Dedicated to you (with Betty Carter) Country and Western complete 1959-1982(?) Does anybody know about these ones, mostly about the remastering quality..?Is it woth spending the extra money to get the japanese reissues, such as Newport 58? Would be great to read about that.. Many thks B)
  10. I passed over it because I have so many other Smith albums
  11. - Sister Sadie? Why not Song for my Father and Doodlin' ( Hi Pete Fallico...) Round'Midnight Corcovado-Desafinado Blues March Moanin' The Sidewinder
  12. Thanks everybody for your input...nothing left but place the order
  13. Brad, Can you tell us details about the Sonny Criss #23 Mr Blues pour Flirter...I'm desperately looking for it in Brussels and Paris, but it appears to be sold out everywhere. If really worthwile, I'd go to get it from CD universe, but that makes it a bit pricy... Thks for your comments
  14. Porgy & Bess - with Eddy Louiss on organ and arrangements by Ivan Julien - recorded in 1971.
  15. [ QUOTE] Too bad I had no idea this Babyface thing had been availble in 1994.I've been looking for it for years.Would anybody have an idea where to get it from? My usual suppliers can't help...Thks B)
  16. [Tonight I saw Ruth Laredo perform Sonata #10. Do not miss Dimitri Alexeev playing Scriabin sonatas...
  17. Okay Okay....but if you stay in that kind of league, do not bypass the one and only, possibly the most formidable pianist of all times : Sviatoslav Richter. This exceptional musician explores an incredibly wide repertoire, ranging from JSBach to Debussy, Prokofiev, Rachmaninov,Scriabin The recording quality is variable, but, usually all the Philips and RCA Columbia discs are of very good sonic quality .Anyway, the playing is so stunning one quickly forgets whatever recording deficiencies there may be. Keeping this in mind, I would recommend his readings of Pictures at an exhibition (Prague live version) Beethoven Appasionata sonata (RCA 1960) and the JSBach well tempered clavier (Eurodisc). The latter is probably one of the finest version ever, despite the very dull and distant sound recording. Check also the sublime Schubert sonatas D960 and D664 as well as the Wanderer Fantasie. For the better sound quality, try his latest Haydn sonatas. There are too many great pianists to name even a small list of them, but, if there were one never to be forgotten, I'd say Richter and Richter and Richter

  19. And, in between Germany and France, there is Brussels Belgium...Check this place : this is where I make my live Hammond recording experiments....(be careful about this, I almost blew their PA system recently ) This is where I recorded Rhoda Scott sessions last year www.themusicvillage.com/home_uk.html Would be great to have you here...
  20. Manufactured in 1986...I guess it should be a Valhalla.
