    Herb Jeffries

hope this is not true but I heard that he has passed right before his 100th birthday!! truly hope this is in error. SO GLAD TO KNOW THAT IT WAS IN ERROR AND THAT HE CELEBRATED HIS 100th BIRTHDAY!!
  3. will be seeing Wayne this week at the Monterey Jazz Festival and at a special tribute to him the night before the Festival starts! so happy for him.
  4. how I wish I could attend this concert. everyone who is able to should definitely take advantage of this opportunity. and I believe it's free!!
  5. please tell Tim that we love and appreciate him for continuing to bring the eclectic mix of excellent talent every year. I wonder if he has any plans to include Cecile McLorin Salvant for next year. she's a "no-brainer" for Monterey!
  6. enjoyed watching the Haden interview but it is very sad that "nature" played a miserable trick on him.
  7. yes, Clifford, Prophet lived in Sweden in the '60s, I believe (and maybe before that). he was married to a beautiful Swedish hostess for SAS who died in a crash off the CA Coast in the late '60s. their daughter Dominique was born in Sweden. Prophet knew practically everyone in the jazz world, including Sonny, Max, Miles, Mingus, etc., etc.
  8. in L.A., Tavis's show with Wayne is scheduled to be shown on PBS (KOCE for us) at 12:30AM, so technically it's Sat. morning. i'm taking a nap to enable me to stay up to see it. his birthday party last Sunday was fabulous, the Bowl concert on Wed. was wonderful (I especially loved him playing with Imani Winds), and i'm sure this interview will prove VERY interesting!!
  9. I was fortunate enough to see her on stage in NY in the '60s. she was an original.
  10. I guess i'm one of the very fortunate ones: I couldn't count the number of times I have seen/heard Cedar in person starting from the early '60s until 2010. I was looking forward to adding to my fortune as he was scheduled to appear on The Jazz Cruise for a week next January. Benny Green will lead his group for the Cruise. R.I.P. Cedar.
  11. thank you so very much for posting this. George was always "up" no matter what! one would never know by listening to him how sick he was and that he had lost his beloved wife last year. I will always love Corine and George and their family. bless them all, strongly.
  12. and I remember him as Barbara Eden's husband!
  13. talent aside, she was always more than a bit nutty. don't think she had enough money to be called "eccentric"!
  14. rest assured, Sonny will not "retire" unless he has to because of health reasons! playing is his life!
  15. birthday blessings to my dear old friend, Charles McPherson. i'm aghast after all these years to discover/remember that you're younger than I am!!! you're the best!
  16. i'm sure everyone realizes that this incredible actor used to be a cop! he was a wonderful talent.
  17. I happen to have great interest in the Newport line-up but it just isn't fitting in with my schedule. ironically, i'll be in Boston on Aug. 7th, just a short while after the Festival. luckily, most of my favorites performing there i'll see elsewhere within the next month or two.
  18. what the hell is wrong with you? why are you attacking someone who gives more to jazz in a week than you do in a year?!? if that.
  19. I heard that they may send him home. bless him, bless him, is all I can say. he deserves blessings from everyone in this world! such a high-evolved person.
  20. how could Richard be 85?!? seems to me like he should be more like 75!! wishing him a very Happy, Healthy Birthday, whatever his age.
  21. very interesting article. she sounds like a woman with a lot of courage and integrity. I wish her luck, for sure.
