  1. String Quartets No. 3, Op.18 & No.4, Op.25
  2. Ben Riley as part of the Kenny Barron Trio was a highly musical drummer.
  3. The thread on drummer Oliver Jackson inspired me to locate this one.
  4. Saw Lew in a Toronto jazz club some years ago. He was playing with a very good Toronto rhythm section that included Mark Eisenman on piano, Steve Wallace on bass, and John Sumner on drums. Lew played his ass off. It would be difficult to identify a tenor man who plays with more intensity. A true swinger! My only "complaint" was that he seems to like very very lengthy solo codas.
  5. Arriaga - String Quartet No.3 & Mozart - String Quintet K.515 _ Heifetz / Piatigorsky
  6. Personally, I prefer when album covers give a bit of helpful information. Especially the names of key sidemen. In a record shop you can turn the cover over to get information on personnel, tunes, etc. But on the computer, iPad, or iPhone, a picture of an album cover with nothing but the name of the leader and title can unsatisfying (to me).
  7. This is one of my favorites bY Lew Tabackin.
  8. Haydn - Op.33/3 & Smetana - Piano Trio
  9. Dvorak - String Quartet No.13, Op.106 & Schubert - Symphony No.8, D.759 "Unfinished'
  10. I met Don Heckman many years ago in Detroit when he came for a weekend jazz festival. It must have been about 1965 or 1966..
  11. Yes, Piano Tuners are not given the recognition they deserve. Good article.
  12. My friend Ted O'Reilly in Toronto reminded me that Don Thompson, usually thought of as a bass player, is also a very good vibes player and pianist.
