  1. Jazz from the Westchester Workshop, London Records 1957. Recent buy for a tenner. A minor masterpiece, in a birth of the cool style. Carmen Leggio, tenor. Eddie Bert, trombone, Gen Allen, baritone, the only names known to me. Vinnie Riccitelli, composer, arranger and alto. A marvellous sounding recording by ‘Unique, New York’. No details of the recording engineer on my UK issue.
  2. Modern Sounds, Lars Gullin, Contemporary 10”. What a beautiful record.
  3. Sounds a great gig, thanks the write up Bob. Hope Mike feels up to gigs outside of the SW soon.
  4. Hi Bob, how was the concert and how was Mike? I don’t think he’s been too active recently. Anthony
  5. The Tokyo Blues, Horace Silver Quintet 1962. Has to be one of Horace’s finest.
  6. Yes. Very Interesting character. The Neneh Cherry/ Marshall Allen sounds like something off Attica Blues. thanks for linking Rostasi.
  7. Gilles Peterson interviewing Jimi Tenor this weekend mentioned getting Marshall Allen to play recently on stage with the Arkestra in New York, then meeting him the next day with Marshall standing outside in the freezing cold having a smoke, after having been up all night. About 1hr 54 into his BBC 6 radio programme on Saturday, tried linking but didn’t work.
  8. Not a big Dylan fan either, but it’s a great ‘film’ rather than a documentary. It has a pace to it, that you forget it’s over 2 hours. The cinematography is brilliant. You really feel you are in Greenwich Village or at the Newport folk festival in the early ‘60s.
  9. A brilliant, funny and moving film. I don’t think promoting this as a buddy movie has done it any favours. I have raved about it to all my friends, saying ignore the buddy movie billing. What’s HULU?
  10. OT but I saw the Rip Rig and Panic spin off group, Float up CP (as in Charlie Parker) with I think a v pregnant Neneh Cherry and Andi Oliver singing. Around 1984 in a church hall in Kentish Town. Great gig!

    Marion Brown

I wonder if the prize is supported by the compensation paid to Marion Brown for the botched amputation of his leg? I can’t think off hand of any alto players influenced by his distinctive style. A true one off.
  12. The earlier reissue of Flashpoint came with a DVD film of the recording session. Was fascinating to see the older musicians like Ronnie Scott really getting into this new music.
  13. To be playing composed music, as implied, after taking LSD, challenging. Will have to relisten to Basra.

    Frank Strozier

Think this is worth reposting. Strozier’s solo is very good here. Klemmer’s, awful. Love the Sun Ra style costumes.
  15. Followed by this great UK Fontana Kirk compilation. J C Moses with Kirk on Cabin in the sky. Wow, what a drummer. Shame he died so young.
  16. UK 1961 white label Mono, sounds great. One from my Dad’s collection. Griffin really goes for it. Not sure if he did a long stretch at the Five Spot, like Coltrane. Evidence is the stand out track, with Haynes going crazy under Griffin’s solo.

    David Izenzon

Reactivating an ancient thread, on the sleeve notes to Harold McNair’s Affectionate Fink on Island Records, David Izenzon is said to be collaborating on an LP with Gil Evans. Sleevenotes (by Charles Fox) are from autumn 1965. I wonder what that project was. Any ideas?
  19. Clearing my parent’s house this summer, I found this with a sticker on which my Dad had written, ‘first record I bought, give to Anthony.’ I also discovered a Max Roach Drum Quintet 78 originally on Debut records (Esquire edition) with Hank Mobley. Just one of those things. Looking forward to playing this. Anthony London
  20. An absolute classic. Desert island disc for me.
  21. Horace Silver Trio Blue Note CD. Safari and Yeah are the same tune, yes? Feather and Blumenthal liner notes don’t seem to acknowledge this.
  22. Fôrça Bruta, Jorge Ben. An essential reissue from Dusty Groove. One of my favourite albums, every song a classic. Ps not into streaming, how am I going to cope as I about to sell my 20 year old Golf with CD player. This CD has been a constant favourite in the car. The punchy horns on Domenica sound perfect over a car stereo.
  23. Spark me up. I wonder what contribution jazz photography made over the years to nicotine addiction. Anthony (ex smoker, last gasp 2008)
  24. Anyone going to see David Murray at Cafe Oto next week?
