  1. I can't listen to the ODJB for very long either. They are important for putting jazz on wax, but the semesters I TA'ed the jazz class (and also when I took it for fun) hearing "Original Dixieland Jass Band Two Step" over and over was maddening. One thing I thank that class for is opening my ears to pre swing era jazz though I don't necessarily enjoy it.
  2. good points Mike. I can't imagine Tony on ECM either, and I agree if you let go of the "Lifetime" tribute tag, this disc really works on its own.
  3. I can attest most of the JOS is good, I have all of the live discs on Milestone. The Tyner, not sure, I have "Together", "Enlightenment" and "Counterpoints: Live in Tokyo" as far as that stuff goes.
  4. listened to clips, wow that "Never Can Say Goodbye" remix works.
  5. well said Reinier! ECM= Editions of Creative Music. I wonder what's up with the 5 second lead in before the tracks start. It was like that on a bunch of Jarrett albums too.
  6. really Lon? I had no idea this set leaned the other way I have yet to purchase this set also
  7. more traditional huh? I thought this set brings and certain forward push with Larry and Jack which makes the more out moments really work well. And of course Jack is the usual master of implied time. I was playing "Seven Steps to Heaven" for a friend from this and I asked him to pick out 2 and 4, he couldn't do it. I met my friend when I was a TA in the jazz course.
  8. yes skeith, I thought saudades meant sadness or songs also............... but yeah I meant that the touring agency might be a factor in the album title, which is sort of odd.
  9. yep, I think using that as a riff base for the tune was intended. But does anyone think the title "Saudades" is odd? considering in the liner notes, its said that is the European touring agency that helped bring Jack, Sco and Larry together, the Yellowjackets thank the same touring agency on their new album "25" as well.
  10. what a shame! She always gave great and quick replies in emails to questions I had about the catalog.
  11. excellent post as always MG! You are the soul jazz champ of these boards . I have avoided GG at the Lighthouse but now maybe I will check it out prior to the Mozambique record.
  12. TOCJ 4021. I received it today, from Amazon Marketplace. I am very pleased, terrific album, but I traded off my US copy a few years ago, thought the sound sucked. Very happy to have it in good sound : Also got Chick Corea's "Complete Is Sessions" for $13 and change, which was sealed. Very interesting album so far.
  13. BTW, if Clarence Thomas is on sax, does it include the tracks "Pubic" and "Long Dong"? I know its bad taste, I just had to!
  14. well, because Larry was in Lifetime. See the connection now? And maybe they just thought it was a good tune to get loose with.
  15. I wish! I don't have a car. I hope you guys play the Binghamton area! There is a new club called onQ in the area.
  16. thanks Joe, me too, I wish! And yes, I dunno many 25 year old ppl who love jazz. I suppose it was early, hey, just 3 and a half, but I bought the Miles Legendary Prestige box last night. I really enjoy the stuff in recorded order which is odd, b/c with the exception of the Plugged Nickel and Blackhawk stuff the sequence of the Columbia studio stuff drives me nuts with the multiple takes. Anyway for whatever reason, I honestly prefer the sound of the Prestige Quintet box to the K2's and XRCD's I have of the original albums, which I will now pass on to a friend how did Pat play the other night Joe? really wish I was there, we could have been all fanboy together
  17. what did that include? well I ended up shopping myself, going to dinner with a friend tonight. 25 is the first minor milestone I guess in adulthood.
  18. I'm all over that Tony Williams set! been waiting for that to come out!
  19. my enthusiasm for "Seven Steps" was tampered with a little today, a musak version at the mall. Especially after the burning version on this album
  20. thanks Jim, it probably is a New B-3, thats what I was thinking. Leave it to ECM to be vague on the details
  21. yeah, it's a shame Wynton won't allow great musicians like Anat Cohen, Sherri Maricle, Terri Lynne Carrington, Mimi Fox into his circle.
  22. I agree with what Allen said. Jazz isn't a masculine or feminine music, it all lies within the energy and creativity of the musicians. If challenging jazz was "masculine" then there wouldn't be artists like Hiromi who are playing energy filled power packed music.
