  1. Thanks for this. I always enjoy reading Sonny's thoughts, his spiritual and ideals about the world are so interesting.
  2. Same here.
  3. The DVD is amazing. I like the 1998 remaster/remix too, just disappointed we were told this was supposed to include the original stereo mix.
  4. That is a great solo! I need to pull that disc out again.

    Joe Henderson

I don't know about "left field apesh*t", but definitely his ability to take it out and come right back in is most indicative of quite a few of his great solos. I'm running over in my head now a couple of pieces of his that have always killed me, "Jinrikisha" from his very first Blue Note-led session, PAGE ONE, and the version of "Blue Bossa" from LIVE IN JAPAN. He was great, and I think despite all the recognition he received during his later Verve period, still somewhat under-rated. While it may be true that Joe is somewhat under-rated, I think he is quite influential among young up and coming tenor players. I consider his Verve CD's for all their popularity, to be rather over-rated and among his least interesting. Right now I'm listening to Discs 5-8 of the Milestone box, and while I find the music on these discs less than totally satisfying, Joe's playing is EXCELLENT, some of his strongest (and best recorded) I think, and much better than on the later Verve sides. Yes, while not exactly up and coming tenor players anymore, Joe Lovano, David Sanchez and particularly Javon Jackson strike me as having a huge Henderson influence in their playing. As for a younger guy, I'd add Marcus Strickland to that list.
  6. Geoff is excellent on the Christian McBride discs he's on.
  7. I really like Stanley Clarke's acoustic solo vignettes and "El Bayo Negro" on "The Toys of Men" album from 2007. Steve Rodby has a great solo on "How Insensitive" on the Pat Metheny Group's "Speaking of Now" DVD done as a trio with Pat and Antonio Sanchez.
  8. I have the 4 original CD's and DVD, I wish Mosaic would release a set of the COMPLETE concert. There's a whole bunch of stuff like a entire Blakey set that was rejected, "Moanin" was the only released title from that set for some reason.
  9. Figured I would post for those interested that Antonio Sanchez has a new album out on CAM Jazz. Same pianoless quartet format as "Migration" except Miguel Zenon on alto replaces Chris Potter, and I realize not everyone may be a fan of Antonio's busy style but the album is smoking. Really well recorded, mixed and mastered. What I really dig is their take on Pat Metheny's "H&H", which really brings out the Ornette-ish nature of the tune out more than the original version on "Question and Answer".
  10. I watched the DVD last night, it's excellent. I love the super abstracted "Agitation" on this.
  11. Well, I decided to buy the Legacy Edition for the DVD. The 40th anniversary box looks nice but I don't need it. Solved the "Feio" issue by ripping it to my harddrive, and I'm just gonna give the '99 release to a friend.
  12. I always have loved her version of "God Bless the Child" on CTI Summer Jazz at the Hollywood Bowl.

    Joe Henderson

What I remember reading about Joe was that he was quite interested in linguistics and spoke 7 languages.
  14. I will just wait for the 40th Anniversary box... If the Legacy Edition is the previous '98 remix, I have that, then the 3 disc isn't worth it. Most if not all the other Legacy Editions have used the same masterings though the Sketches 50th sounds different and a bit less bright than the box version to me.
  15. LOL
  16. Since Bitches Brew isn't as big of a deal to me as having the big KoB set was with the blue vinyl, and since the Tanglewood show is at Wolfgang's Vault, think the Legacy Edition of BB will fit the bill with the DVD? I'll still have to hang on to the '99 version as the Legacy Edition does not contain "Feio".
  17. Ahh well, still... "Way Out West" is an INCREDIBLE album sonically, have to admit its my first time listening to it. Just one of those things. Listening through my Audio Technica studio monitor phones (like the ones Jim mixed his solo record on) and with my EQ pretty much flat.
  18. I bought it at Coconuts the other day and b/c of the sticker on the back of the box, does it say if those are new masterings in that box? "Way Out West" sounds stunning.
  19. Ahh!!!!! I see. I have all 6 previous releases, but this will have to wait till it comes out.
  20. I didn't see a preorder link for the 2010 music of Silver set yet.
  21. Definitely.
  22. The Yoshi's and Live at the Kennedy Center albums are very good.
