Happy Birthday!!! (safety first)

Jim, (or others with knowledge of organ stuff) don't some organists walk left-hand bass and also kind of tap the pedals (with a bass registration that has a percussive sound) almost like a drummer feathering the bass drum? Seems like I've seen some guys do that

No, no... She was married to the late Alistair Cook.

I like the idea of the Long Playing "Gruve-Gard" records.

From this story on Yahoo! news. Jack Black Elopes! By Gina Serpe Tue Mar 14, 9:46 PM ET King Kong's Jack Black is one up on his even more hirsute costar: In the end, he got the girl. The big-screen funnyman has eloped with his girlfriend, musician Tanya Haden, People reports. While there's no word on when exactly the couple tied the knot, one thing's for sure: Black's new father-in-law couldn't be happier. "They love each other very much," renowned jazz bassist Charlie Haden told the magazine. "We're thrilled." Black's publicist, Matt Labov, was much more reticent, however. He declined to confirm or deny the report. Black, 36, and Haden, 34, first met while attending Crossroads High School in Santa Monica, a school heavy on the perfroming arts, though they were never romantically involved. It was only last spring that they reconnected, shortly after Black's split from his longtime girlfriend, comedian Laura Kightlinger, and began dating. "I had a crush on her," the School of Rock star told GQ magazine last January. "We weren't, like, close buddies. She was too pretty, and I was scared to talk to her." According to GQ, the duo bumped into each other last April at a mutual friend's birthday party for which Black's two-man band, Tenacious D, was performing. "And Tanya was there, and as usual, it was like it always was," Black said. "I got really nervous and I talked to her...and it's been great. I'm really crazy about her." The newlyweds' relationship indeed seemed to be fairy tale-like from the start. Shortly after their relationship began, Black recounted to GQ, "I obsessively compulse over things, and she's the center of my obsessive-compulsive energy vortex of pain right now. I can't stop thinking about her." According to In Touch, Black proposed to Haden just after Christmas, sealing the deal with a $220,000 ring from jeweler Neil Lane. Haden, like her famous father, is a musician, having played cello in the Haden Triplets with her sisters--Rachel and Petra--and yes, they're really triplets. (Petra Haden recently released the acclaimed a cappella cover album The Who Sell Out.) Tanya Haden also has worked as an animator. As for Black, prior to his surprise nuptials, he had been linked with writer-comic Kightlinger since 1997, appearing together on countless red carpets and frequently engaging in PDA-heavy antics. The duo quietly split at the beginning of last year. Unfortunately for the new twosome, their honeymoon period may not last as long as they would've hoped. Black is set for a busy year, with no less than five upcoming films, including the comedy Nacho Libre, where he plays a Mexican priest who moonlights as a martial arts master; the romantic comedy The Holiday, opposite Jude Law, Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz; and the near-to-his heart Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny. The latter is a fictionalized biopic, and will tell the tale of how he and buddy Kyle Glass came to form their stoner-beloved acoustic metal band. All three films are due out this year. Now that he's gone groom, Black might also be cashing in his "plus one" for the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards. The comedian is set to host the kid-centric kudos Apr. 1.

So my car was broken into last night...
DukeCity replied to md655321's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Years ago my girlfriend was the victim of a carjacking. The guy made off with my piece of crap '78 Ford LTD, and just ditched it on the outskirts of town, leaving the keys. He took some cash out of her purse and the new Walkman (that she was going to give me for my birthday). When the cops recovered the car, we learned that the guy was not the curious type. He didn't bother to check the trunk, which contained almost $20,000 worth of saxophones and other woodwind instruments! -
I'm sure this topic is more involved than I can imagine, but: I just dusted off my vinyl set-up after several years. Nothing even approaching audiophile (Technics SQ-SL2000 TT with a new, cheap Shure cart., Onkyo TX-3000 receiver, Polk Audio BK50 speakers). Over the years I have replaced some of my LPs with CDs. I doubt that I'm going to start replacing any of my other CDs with LPs (famous last words...). I'll still continue to buy CD reissues, but is there any source/book/website/forum where I could findout what jazz has not yet been reissued on CD? In other words, if I'm going through the bins at a store and find something I don't own in any format, how can I find out if it's been put out on CD, or if I should snap up the LP?

Happy Birthday, Paulie!!! We all chipped in and got you a little something. (too bad we didn't have this last summer for Porkapalooza 2005) Just wait there by the front door. Should be pulling up any minute...

Holy Crap! It's pretty impressive to see them all listed together like that. That kid did OK for himself!

Sonny Stitt recorded "Eternal Triangle" with Dizzy and Rollins, and recorded the same tune (with a regular rhythm changes bridge) as "The String" on one of his own dates for Verve. Mis-identification: On Miles' Jazz at the Plaza, the tune "Straight, No Chaser" is incorrectly listed as "Jazz at the Plaza" on the LP release. (also incorrectly listed the drummer as Philly Jo, when it was actually Jimmy Cobb)

Thanks, Jim. I haven't fired up that Acomdata drive in a while. Maybe I should check it out, and look for an option for backing up those files. Glad to hear that you were able to recover your Baker's and (some of your) Green Mill stuff.

Think he was mad because he's not sure if he's the father of their child? -
Jim, do you speak of the Western Digital (Acomdata) drives from personal experience, or from reviews? I only ask because the local high-end studio here uses Acomdata, and they recommended one to me to store files from my sessions there. Should I be worried?!?

I got it when it came out, but haven't listened in a while. If you know all of those guys, it's pretty much exactly what you would expect. I'm a fan of Mintzer's melodic approach and his tone, and of course, Brecker is Brecker (although I recall him sounding a bit restrained on this). I liked the fact that it didn't have the vibe of a "cutting contest". Grolnick and Erskine also do some good work. I think the record is techincally a Mintzer record, so it's different even than the Grolinck Bluenote that Brecker and Mintzer(on bass clar.) appear on. But it's in a very similar vein. I remember particularly liking the ballad medley (Body and Soul? and Everything Happens to Me?). I think the only other Brecker/Mintzer pairing I have is the out-of-control, blow-fueled Jaco Birthday Big Band thing; quite a different animal than Twin Tenors! I guess, my bottom line on TT is, if you like Brecker and/or Mintzer and/or Grolnick, jump in.

Happy Birthday, Johnny! A couple days ago I sent a request to the White House to see if I could get Bush to proclaim this as "Johnny E Day". Their answer was not only a resounding "Not on your life", but yesterday I got hit with an IRS audit for every year going back to '99. But hey, if I can get a corner piece of the cake with extra frosting, it will have been worth it. Have a good one!

What live music are you going to see tonight?
DukeCity replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Just got home from a Chris Potter concert with his new Underground band: Craig Taborn on Fender Rhodes, Adam Rogers on guitar and Nate Smith on drums. I thoroughly enjoyed it. They did a few tunes from the new CD (which I haven't picked up yet): Underground, Lotus Blosson (Strayhorn, with some beautiful reharms), and Nudnick. Played what Potter introduced as a "tradition African tune" called Togo. Also did a couple of new ones: Pop Song #1, and#2, and a couple that were not introduced. As an encore they did a cover of a Joni Mitchell tune, Ladies of the Canyon . Potter, of course, has ridiculously prodigious chops; tremendous control and flexibility on the saxophone. I also find his sound to be more gratifying in live situations than on most of his CDs. Craig Taborn was playing on a Rhodes borrowed from a local musician, and it appeared that he wasn't thrilled with the action on it. Apparently the action was very hard; so much so that he was actually shaking out his right hand at points in his solos. He also appeared to opt out of taking some solos. Adam Rogers played some really nice lines, and Nate MF Smith! Very happening. The whole group had a ton of rhythmic variety happening, both in the tunes (mixed meter and tunes in 3) and rhythmic interplay. The basic vibe is very groove oriented, but they were pushing and pulling and stretching things a lot. Excellent way to spend a Thursday night here in the desert... -
I played on a Meyer 5 for years, and a couple of years ago I got a Berg-Larsen rubber mpc. (80/2) that I've been liking. I wanted something with a little more 'hair' on it; not so sweet. The larger number on the mpc. refers to the tip opening (in thousandths of an inch) and your Meyer is about 75, so this would be bigger, some guys go for 85-95 for a wide open thing. The smaller number in the facing (0,1,2,3) refers to the baffle inside the mouthpiece, with 0 being the highest baffle (brightest sound) and 3 being the lowest (darkest sound). You can check out the Berg website here. Also: if you change mpcs, especially tip openings, you may have to also try a different strength/brand of reed. Typically, the bigger the tip opening, the softer the reed and vice versa. Of course, your mileage may vary!
