I would also add Tobacco Road, by Lou Rawls. Bluesy, shoutin', swingin' big band arrangements by Onzy Matthews, featuring Bud Brisbois on lead trumpet and saxophonist Sonny Criss. Early Lou (1963?), unfortunately not on CD. (Just got an LP copy on eBay, awaiting arrival!)

Them's fightin' words, bub! Trader Joes is one of the best grocery store chains on the planet, and I miss 'em something fierce down here... I've never been to one (I think the nearest one is in the Detroit area, but I could be wrong)... I just keep hearing about them and how great they are and it makes me think that they'll soon take over the world, like Sam's Club or something, and drive all the local guys out of business. A new Trader Joe's just opened here in Albuturkey, but I haven't been yet (there's been one open in Santa Fe for a couple of years). We always stock up on the nototrious "Two Buck Chuck"; Charles Stewart, a drinkable California wine for two bucks a bottle ($2 in CA, $3 here in NM). Need to check out the pickle aisle, I guess.

Picked this one up yesterday, and had time for one listen last night. I like it. Makes me want to dig out my copy of The Nightfly (unfortunately I sold my vinyl Nightfly, but I have the CD somewhere), and the two recent Steely Dan sides. Definitely all cut from the same cloth, but that's some groovy cloth!

What cool things does your pet do?
DukeCity replied to Free For All's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
When the future Mrs. DukeCity and I moved in together last year, we combined by 14-year old cat with her two very energetic dogs (Australian Blue Heeler mix, and a Shepherd mix). Kinda rough at first, but they have acheived a detente of sorts. The dogs, having been "fixed" since puppyhood, are completely confused in the romance department. The female is the dominant dog, so is often 'on top', but niether of them understands how Tab A is supposed to fit into Slot B. As a result, they start wrestling around, and invariably end up in some kind of position that you couldn't really call a 69. It's more like a 47... or something. The cat, in her current geriatric state has become more and more high-maintenence. She has lived her entire life eating primarily dry food, but now her digestive system is pretty fragile, so she's on almost all canned food (ick). Not only that, but we have to sneak the Thyroid medication into the first morning spoonful, AND each can of food gets a couple of tablespoons of Metamucil mixed in! So, in response to the original question of this thread, the cool thing my cat does? She still poops! -

Hey Jim, it's the least we can do. Well, actually I guess the least we could do would be nothing...but you get the idea. Thanks for having a place for us to hang.

Just checked my work email, and it was apparently a big weekend for spam poetry: #1 Having said his feeble piece, Bengalsky put his hands palm to palm and raised them in a gesture of welcome towards the gap in the curtain, which then rose with a soft rustle. The entry of the magician with his tall assistant and his cat, who trotted on stage on his hind legs, pleased the audience greatly. ' Armchair, please,' said Woland quietly and instantly an armchair appeared on stage from nowhere. The magician sat down. ' Tell me, my dear Faggot,' Woland enquired of the check-clad buffoon, who apparently had another name besides ' Koroviev,': 'do you find the people of Moscow much changed? ' The magician nodded towards the audience, still silent with astonishment at seeing an armchair materialise from nowhere. 'I do, messire,' replied Faggot-Koroviev in a low voice. 'You are right. The Muscovites have changed considerably . . = #2 complete and violent change. 'Yesterday evening Arkady Apollonich was at a meeting of the Acoustics Commission,' said his wife haughtily. ' Surely that has nothing to do with magic? ' 'ïÛ, madame,' replied Faggot, ' it has, but you naturally do not know why. As for the meeting, you are quite wrong. When he went to the meeting--which, incidentally, was never scheduled to take place yesterday--Arkady Apollonich dismissed his chauffeur at the Acoustics Commission (a hush came over the whole theatre) and took a bus to Yelokhovskaya Street where he called on an actress called Militsa Andreyevna Pokobatko from the local repertory theatre and spent about four hours in her flat.' 'Oh!' The painful cry rang out from complete silence. Suddenly Arkady Apollonich's young cousin burst into a low, malicious laugh. 'Of course!' she exclaimed. ' I've suspected him for a long time. Now I see why that tenth-rate ham got the part of Luisa!' And with a sudden wave of her arm she hit Arkady Apollonich on the head with a short, fat, toq oqjnu oho lolol pk oin onkrmnu nuoo sdjksdfsdfsdlgkj sdflkjsdf lksdjfsdfsdf #3 envy. At once, too, he would curse heaven for having failed to endow him at birth with literary talent, without which, of course, no one could so much as dream of acquiring a MASSOLIT membership card--that brown card known to all Moscow, smelling of expensive leather and embellished with a wide gold border. Who is prepared to say a word in defence of envy? It is a despicable emotion, but put yourself in the visitor's place : what he had seen on the upper flÏÏÇ was by no means all. The entire ground floor of the aunt's house was occupied by a restaurant-- and what a restaurant! It was rightly considered the best in Moscow. Not only because it occupied two large rooms with vaulted ceilings and lilac-painted horses with flowing manes, not only because every table had a lamp shaded with lace, not only because it was barred to the hoi polloi, but above all for the quality of its food. Griboyedov could beat any restaurant in Moscow you cared to name and its prices were extremely moderate. There is therefore nothing odd in the conversation which the pg ugurumtpttt ttt sstqugr sn ur mr msg sdjksdfsdfsdlgkj sdflkjsdf lksdjfsdfsdf

Jim, (or others with knowledge of organ stuff) don't some organists walk left-hand bass and also kind of tap the pedals (with a bass registration that has a percussive sound) almost like a drummer feathering the bass drum? Seems like I've seen some guys do that

From this story on Yahoo! news. Jack Black Elopes! By Gina Serpe Tue Mar 14, 9:46 PM ET King Kong's Jack Black is one up on his even more hirsute costar: In the end, he got the girl. The big-screen funnyman has eloped with his girlfriend, musician Tanya Haden, People reports. While there's no word on when exactly the couple tied the knot, one thing's for sure: Black's new father-in-law couldn't be happier. "They love each other very much," renowned jazz bassist Charlie Haden told the magazine. "We're thrilled." Black's publicist, Matt Labov, was much more reticent, however. He declined to confirm or deny the report. Black, 36, and Haden, 34, first met while attending Crossroads High School in Santa Monica, a school heavy on the perfroming arts, though they were never romantically involved. It was only last spring that they reconnected, shortly after Black's split from his longtime girlfriend, comedian Laura Kightlinger, and began dating. "I had a crush on her," the School of Rock star told GQ magazine last January. "We weren't, like, close buddies. She was too pretty, and I was scared to talk to her." According to GQ, the duo bumped into each other last April at a mutual friend's birthday party for which Black's two-man band, Tenacious D, was performing. "And Tanya was there, and as usual, it was like it always was," Black said. "I got really nervous and I talked to her...and it's been great. I'm really crazy about her." The newlyweds' relationship indeed seemed to be fairy tale-like from the start. Shortly after their relationship began, Black recounted to GQ, "I obsessively compulse over things, and she's the center of my obsessive-compulsive energy vortex of pain right now. I can't stop thinking about her." According to In Touch, Black proposed to Haden just after Christmas, sealing the deal with a $220,000 ring from jeweler Neil Lane. Haden, like her famous father, is a musician, having played cello in the Haden Triplets with her sisters--Rachel and Petra--and yes, they're really triplets. (Petra Haden recently released the acclaimed a cappella cover album The Who Sell Out.) Tanya Haden also has worked as an animator. As for Black, prior to his surprise nuptials, he had been linked with writer-comic Kightlinger since 1997, appearing together on countless red carpets and frequently engaging in PDA-heavy antics. The duo quietly split at the beginning of last year. Unfortunately for the new twosome, their honeymoon period may not last as long as they would've hoped. Black is set for a busy year, with no less than five upcoming films, including the comedy Nacho Libre, where he plays a Mexican priest who moonlights as a martial arts master; the romantic comedy The Holiday, opposite Jude Law, Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz; and the near-to-his heart Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny. The latter is a fictionalized biopic, and will tell the tale of how he and buddy Kyle Glass came to form their stoner-beloved acoustic metal band. All three films are due out this year. Now that he's gone groom, Black might also be cashing in his "plus one" for the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards. The comedian is set to host the kid-centric kudos Apr. 1.

So my car was broken into last night...
DukeCity replied to md655321's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Years ago my girlfriend was the victim of a carjacking. The guy made off with my piece of crap '78 Ford LTD, and just ditched it on the outskirts of town, leaving the keys. He took some cash out of her purse and the new Walkman (that she was going to give me for my birthday). When the cops recovered the car, we learned that the guy was not the curious type. He didn't bother to check the trunk, which contained almost $20,000 worth of saxophones and other woodwind instruments! -
I'm sure this topic is more involved than I can imagine, but: I just dusted off my vinyl set-up after several years. Nothing even approaching audiophile (Technics SQ-SL2000 TT with a new, cheap Shure cart., Onkyo TX-3000 receiver, Polk Audio BK50 speakers). Over the years I have replaced some of my LPs with CDs. I doubt that I'm going to start replacing any of my other CDs with LPs (famous last words...). I'll still continue to buy CD reissues, but is there any source/book/website/forum where I could findout what jazz has not yet been reissued on CD? In other words, if I'm going through the bins at a store and find something I don't own in any format, how can I find out if it's been put out on CD, or if I should snap up the LP?

Happy Birthday, Paulie!!! We all chipped in and got you a little something. (too bad we didn't have this last summer for Porkapalooza 2005) Just wait there by the front door. Should be pulling up any minute...

Holy Crap! It's pretty impressive to see them all listed together like that. That kid did OK for himself!

Sonny Stitt recorded "Eternal Triangle" with Dizzy and Rollins, and recorded the same tune (with a regular rhythm changes bridge) as "The String" on one of his own dates for Verve. Mis-identification: On Miles' Jazz at the Plaza, the tune "Straight, No Chaser" is incorrectly listed as "Jazz at the Plaza" on the LP release. (also incorrectly listed the drummer as Philly Jo, when it was actually Jimmy Cobb)
