Chances are that a university library doesn't want vinyl. Most of the vinyl at the university where I work is in "deep storage" off-site, and they don't want any more.

I wonder that, as well. Seems like it would he hard on the bars of the vibes to chuck them onto the stage like that. Unless he grabbed a "gag" set of bars when he was offstage.

Yeah, but that scene struck me as a little weak. I mean, he's got his black suit on and a white shirt. Put the bow tie on and no one would notice it's not really a tux.

He appears to be cool with it, judging by his statements in an interview from last year. The pertinent line from the interview: "I'm not going to be sitting around nitpicking the character for accuracy. If he votes Republican and has sex with a goat, I'm just going to have to live with that."

When I first got into playing baritone, the list of guys who became my primary influences definitely included Ronnie Cuber (I wore out a copy of "Cuber Libre" on Xanadu). Also on the list: Pepper Adams Nick Brignola Bruce Johnstone (Woody's band, Maynard's band, and a funk group called New York Mary) and some Gerry Mulligan

So I'm listening to Bye Bye Blackbird from Miles Davis All-Stars Live in 1958-59, and in his first chorus of blowing, he quotes "Maria" from West Side Story. At length. Twice. Seems very un-Miles-ish. I can't think of him doing much in the way of quoting other tunes in his solos. Anyone have any insight as to what was going on in that show? Last year a trio of Native American jazz musicians here in ABQ put together some performances, calling the group "Red Hot and Red". However, the material was straight ahead jazz with some afro-cuban stuff. I didn't catch any of their performances, so I don't know if there was any apparent Native elements in the music itself. Read a short article about the group.

I had the opportunity to play many times with Eddie in the Jazz Members big band. It was a real education to hear Eddie blow on those Basie and Ellington charts. He was the real deal, and it came through in everything he played. Very sweet and humble guy. R.I.P., Eddie and thanks for the great music.
