I didn't intend to offend. My apologies to you both!! I was just trying to show the young lad that things like this happen throughout one's life and you kind of just have to put up with it. You don't want to hear how he referred to people who call names though. No offense taken.

Swillnich? Yikes! What ya tryin to do to me there Selrahc, er Chuck. Don't give anyone any more (bad) ideas.

My 8 year old son was upset the other day because one of the kids on the bus calls him "Spinach". When I saw Tod's post, I called him over to see that even a my age, I still have to put up with such nonsense. He didn't think it was funny either.

You're reminding me of my grammar school days Tod

Dex's Steeplechase period is - in a word - excellent. If you're a fan of Dex, you won't be disappointed. A definite buy, IMO.

I've only got the Bailey and Venuti/Lang so far. Both are superb. Both earopening experiences for which I am glad to have had the opportunity to partake. There's some wonderfaul music in those sets.
-
Also, Matthew - pick up the Carmell Jones set. It's fabulous and will help you get back in the Mosaic groove.

Matthew - I think you'd better clean your ears out. If you stopped buying at Byrd/Adam, you've missed The Four Freshmen and Bobby Hackett

Any Comments on H.R.S. Sessions?

Here's another thought, if you enjoy vinyl that is - The Ventura/Phillips set is still available and is a beauty, IMO -

Looks like you've made your decision. But here's another thumbs up anyways. I really enjoy this set. Lots of great music that will probably never see the light of day again. Once you digest this one, let me plant a seed in your thoughts - Capitol set. -
Maybe they were making room for Wynton

It is indeed ironic. I know that Hunter doesn't get much mention on the boards, but I dig him. When he first came on the scene, I thought he would paint himself into a corner with his style of playing, a la Stanley Jordan. But I've enjoyed hearing him in all the various contexts that he has placed himself in. I thought of him as one of the best that Blue Note had on its roster. I'd rather see him with BN than Wynton for sure. In checking a little further, it looks like the album was recorded on one of those self made labels - Ropeadope Records and has subsequently been picked up by Atlantic. Maybe it was the bucks or marketing, but its BN's loss for sure.

I was just checking out new releases on Jazzmatazz and saw a March 25th release for The Charlie Hunter Quintet with Charlie Hunter (guitar); John Ellis (tenor saxophone, bass clarinet); Gregoire Maret (chromatic harmonica); Curtis Fowlkes (trombone); Derek Phillips (drums). It's on Atlantic. Any reason for Blue Note dropping him? (or vice versa) I'm a fan of Hunter's and like the way he doesn't seem to sit still - as evidenced by the lineup above. I'll have to check this one out for sure.

John Patton Mosaic Select: What's in, What's Out?
Ed S replied to Matthew's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Guess I'll only have to look for this one until April 22. It's part of Blue Note's next Rare Groove release. -
I agree with you about the Museum of Science. I liked the darkness and dinginess. Gave the place a real interesting ambience. They now have taken major exhibit space and converted it into hands on type stuff for kids. Fun? - maybe, but sorry kids - it's just not the same. I have not been to the historical building in decades, but I'm a regular at the Albright-Knox. Next time you're in town, do try to get there. If there's a legitimate world class anything in Buffalo, it's the Albright-Knox. If you have not seen their collection in a few years I'm sure there will be some surprises and some old favorites.

I would love to have been at those 1967 Montmartre Jazzhuis Dexter Gordon dates that ended up being released by Black Lion. Would have loved to hear Charlie Parker live during the earliest days of bebop. Some Stan Getz Bossa Nova dates would have been nice - live or studio. I would really have liked to have heard Chick Corea's original Return To Forever - Purim, Airto, etc -live. I still dig that stuff. How about any live Grant Green date during his classic Blue Note period.

New Mosaic Selects for May Release
Ed S replied to Out2Lunch's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I'll definitely get the Weston. I have nothing by him. After all these years, I'm still amazed how little I have. I have Soul Stirrin and Back on the Scene of the Green material. I'll have to wait and see on that one. -

They did a corrected cover and there was a way to get one posted on the BNBB. I never bothered, though. -

The set works for me. Three of the albums will be new to me. I'll still be searchin' for "Got A Good Thing Goin' ", though -
Wait a minute. Impossible - you were here before me. Welcome anyways.
-
Chris, Barak, impossible - welcome. It's always nice to see familiar names, although the White Lightning thing threw me for a loop
-
Looking forward to his first Blue Note release. Blanchard Announcement

Great news. I know that Michael had this material on his wish list when Mosaic was first founded. Those idiots at Verve always had "plans" for it. I fact Tod, your parrot would have made an excellent Verve exec - "have plans, have plans, bwawk, bwawk. Glad to see the deal is signed and sealed. Perhaps this could lead to a few more Verve controlled sets.
-
John - you were right about this stuff. Not too bad. When it comes to these complete sets and their containing some "borderline" material, I always try to keep an open mind and put the material in some sort of context relative to the time at which they were produced. Guess they had to make a buck too, you know

And yes, I'll be checking this one out. I'm interested to hear what all the fuss is about.
