  1. I agree wholeheartedly with that recommendation. Outside of the PJ material, the only Baker I have is this series of discs from the mid 60s. I find them to be excellent. The titles are "Smokin'", "Boppin' with the Chet Baker Quintet", "Comin' on with the Chet Baker Quintet", "Cool Burnin' with the Chet Baker Quintet", "Groovin' with the Chet Baker Quintet" Chet plays mostly flugelhorn. Coleman is amazing. Lot more hard bop sounding than his PJ stuff to be sure. There are no vocals, either.
  2. Definitely in the car to and from work. I have my own office, so I listen all day long, though someimes the music slips into the background as I concentrate on work. At home, sometimes at dinner, then usually late at night. I also have a CD player/clock radio at the bedside along with a pair of headphones.
  3. Tod Collectors Choice and Audiophile USA have been selling Mosaic sets for years. Selected sets have been available in stores for quite some time as well. But I'll grant you that there are more sets available from more sources now than in the past. I kind of look at these as buying opportunities. Lots of sites discount their new releases pretty substantially. I picked up The Four Freshmen and Lee/Christy sets at a nice discount. I'm hoping they put the Hackett set out at the retail level. I'd like not to have to pay full price for that one given what I've read, but I'm curious enough to buy it. Is an expanded retail presence due to slumping catalog sales? Because of EMI's influence? Who knows? They don't advertise anywhere I know, so maybe this is there way of getting the word out. At any rate, I'm not ready to go so far as to say that Mosaic is full shit, but if you ask me about Tom Evered, I might just have a few choice words for you.
  4. I doubt it's you, Ed. I've got a VERY small amount of "name recognition" over there from my musical endeavors over the years. That probably accounts for whatever welcome I've received, that and the freindly "cross-posters" like Kevin, Omar, Uli, Jim Dye, and a few others who know me from both boards. But it IS a more diverse bunch over there, "socially" speaking, than I had imagined. Pick and choose (and wait), I suppose, is the way to break in over there, if that's what you want. I've said it before, and I'll say it again - I VERY much like the vibe here, and that it's a ".org" rather than a ".com". Even if this site never blossoms into a megasite (maybe it will, maybe it won't, it's cool either way), it's great to have a place to hung out with old friends away from the outside world, cyber or otherwise. I've always dug hanging at after hours clubs, and to know that right now there's an after hours joint open 24/7 is just WAY too cool! I've tried striking up a few conversation there periodically over the few years I've been on line. Very little response - it's a tough bunch. When the Blue Note Board first started to unravel I was hoping I did not have to go over there to get my jazz fix. I'm glad that this board and AAJ have filled the void. I still lurk over there on occasion to see if I can get any infomation, though.
  5. Texas Davis. Doesn't quite have a ring to it. If only I had a middle name.
  6. I found the good Dr Freud's posts amusing and sometimes outright funny. He had a way of appearing at the most opportune time in the course of a thread. The Red Menace was even better, IMO. Ever check out his interests? Hot Tubbing? Come on - that's good stuff. Wonder if he picked up his Four Freshmen set? With all the vitriol that was spewn in certain sections of the BNBB I found these two characters providing a little light hearted relief.
  7. I became a fan of Chet Baker as I started picking up OOP Mosaics. I bought a couple of OOP Bakers from Scott at Mosaic a couple of years ago and have really become a fan. The vocals are really an acquired taste. My first exposure to Baker was the song from the Round Midnight soundtrack. I could not figure out what all the fuss was about. But when I started picking up the Mosaics, his body of work really came into focus for me. I love the sound and feel of his horn and really dig his vocal style. I have not gone too much beyond his PJ material, which I find to be outstanding.
  8. I've got the Mosaic LP set. Fabulous music. I'll definitely have to check out Consecration and The Last Waltz.
  9. Hey Victor Welcome to the board. I'm glad you came over to check things out.
  10. Trying not to be pessimistic, I think they hope that the regulars will have enough time to "get over" how shoddily the entire affair was handled and come back. At the same time, I think they've made a point about the type of posts they will not tolerate and are hoping that posters who make those types of posts will come back anticipating a new BN world order or perhaps will have found other boards. Personally, I'll go back to check it out. But I'll also no longer be a one board poster either. It's nice to have options and it's nice to know that their places that are more liberal in what they allow as oppossed to a corporate sponsored bulletin board.
  11. I think its terrific as well. GOM and the other above nail it. Its multi label content make it a rarity as well. I would not want to miss this one.
  12. Maybe not great finds, but what turned out to be great bargains - I was crusing around half.com and stumbled on some 90s Blue Notes. Two Orphy Robinson discs and James Hurt. The price was right. $.99 for the discs, from 3 different sellers. Of course the shipping costs add greatly to that. But still, for around $3.50 each I got what turned out to be some not half bad music. I really like the James Hurt and the first Robinson. His second release - "the Vibes Describes" is somewhat weaker, but it was money well spent.
  13. That was a fun read. It was indeed appropriate that bob was able to delete it before they closed the board. That thread was representative of the type of comeraderie and light hearted fun that developed over the years at that board. Its deletion came at the most appropriate of times
  14. It's such a shame that they did not realize what they had. If they did, they would have done their cleanout in an organized and meaningful way. Instead they chose to throw us all out - lock, stock and barrel. Their loss, in more ways than one. I know my buying habits. Not having the constant banter about releases is going to put them back into the mainstream of my consciousness - competeing for my dollars with the rest of the labels out there instead of getting first crack at my wallet.
  15. Bertrand I know you did not appreciate my thread calling for the temporary closure of the board. I'm sorry for that. I just thought that the fall from what I thought was the best board around to the worst was too disgraceful to continue. I hope that when they do resurrect it, they will have the reissues and discography information readily available. As for Tom, I think my last few days worth of posts sum up my feelings about him. They parallel yours. Arrogant, condescending, insentive, uncaring. I wrote several posts to that effect and I meant every word. I no longer have any respect for the man. Some type of sincere formal apology is needed, I think. I'm not holding my breath, though.
  16. A few years ago, the guys at Audiophile USA acquired about 30 or OOP Mosaic sets. They were all priced WAY under ebay prices, which back then were considerably lower than today's ebay prices. By the time I found out, most of the sets I wanted were gobbled up. They had the Getz/Raney, Desmond/Hall, Master Jazz Piano, and Benny Goodman left. I really did not know the music in any of these, but I grabbed them anyways. I don't remember the exact prices, but they were very close the their retail price point! I fell in love with the Desmond/Hall set immediately. The interplay between those two guys was unbelievable. Always on my list of favorite Mosaics.
  17. Hello Everyone. Took me a few days to get around to registering. Thanks for the nice board Jim. I've been wandering around the past few days. I've been a member at Harlem for a while. WAY to slow there. I posted at BN right up to the bitter end. I also tried putting up a couple of posts over at Jazz Corner. As usual, they got ignored. VERY cliquish over there I've found, though they seem to have welcomed Jim S. I've never gotten responses to my posts there, so it must be me. Oh well. I registered at AAJ as some of you have probably seen. That seems like a decent board as well, that one idiot notwithstanding. I like this board as well. Lots of familiar names
