  1. I just received this set as a gift an I've been listening to it for the past 2 days. This is one hell of a set - truly a "monster" as BFrank mentioned. I have little if any Carmell Jones, certainly none as a leader, in my collection. Both Jones and Land are outstanding throughout. I'd never heard Strazzeri either and am very impressed. To think that this stuff could have sat in the vaults for who knows how long is Mosaic hadn't found a way to get it out. What a shame that would have been. And what a shame it is that music like this doesn't sell because of some silly West Coast stigma.
  2. Gary Welcome Good to have you here.

Vincent - welcome to the board. Glad you found us here!
  4. Hey Bev. Welcome Nice to see you've made it over here. I always enjoyed reading your posts over at BN.
  5. I agree Brad. This board and AAJ have filled the void quite nicely. I have to admit that I was sad and mad. I'm pretty much over that as I've settled in here and at AAJ. But should someone raise the issue, I certainly won't mind getting a few potshots in.
  6. Sounds like I'm in for a treat. Did not know that about the live stuff. I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the heads up.
  7. Just received the Geral Wilson Mosaic as a gift. That's been on all morning. I'm only halfway through disc 2, but it is excellent thus far. I sort of curious to hear those last 2 sessions with the pop stuff.
  8. Saturday, March 29 I'm really excited to have tickets for this one. Job and family responsibilities have cut way down on my ability to see live shows. Plus Buffalo isn't exactly a major stop on the circuit.
  9. I never understood why BN has not done more Sounds reissues either as RvGs or Conns. I thought these guys sold fairly well originally and MC has said in the past that past sales trends generally carry over to reissue sales. I've got all the Sounds stuff that BN has reissued domestically but have not gone the import route. I'm waiting for BN to wise up or for perhaps Mosaic to do some Three Sounds releases. Selects perhaps?
  10. DEFINITELY pick up the Mosaic. That set was a real eye opener for me as I had nothing in my collection by Tristano, Konitz or Marsh prior to picking it up. One of the coolest cover shots too
  11. Big Wheel Under the circumstances, I don't think a post letting them know your thoughts as someone involved in jazz radio would have been pompous at all. Would have just underscored how big a jackass they all were for the handling of the matter.
  12. I mentioned this early on in my posting over at AAJ, but does anyone remember the Seinfeld episode in which his girlfriend kept changing the order of her speed dial depending on things in their relationship were going. That episode was brought to mind when when I bounced the BNBB address a few notches down in My Favorites. Happened again when I when Organissimo supplanted AAJ on the list. I like the vibe at this board, but will still regularly check out AAJ. The biggest challenge for this board, I think, will be coming up with ways to attract new posters. Not that I mind hangin' with all you guys of course, but I think you know what I mean.
  13. All this time I thought it had something to do with my scathing posts critiquing Tom and the BM of all BM's handling of the whole matter and my thread calling for shutting down the board for a couple of months. Now the truth comes out
  14. You know, I'd bcome quite a follower of the great Achtung Dr Freud Calling prior to the shutdown of the Blue Note Board. Perhaps his influence is showing. As for the butler gig, depends on whether the place is going to be crawling with babes like Joe Millionaire's chateau.
  15. I understand those feelings completely, especially in light of the BNBB fiasco. But cheer up Tod. Why don't sit down by the fire and enjoy a piece of your date-nut bread. If you can't finish it, toss some scraps into the fire. The hues of orange, pink, and green in the flames are quite unique. It's almost like the Northern Lights right in your own fireplace. At least the stuff you sent my way had that effect Usually I'd recommend a glass of scotch to help you relax as well. But if you're going to go the date nut bread route, I'd swallow a fistful of Pepcid AC about 30-60 minutes prior to downing the bread. Wash it down with beaucoups amounts of Pepto-Bismol. Put it on ice if you find the sound of ice in your glass soothing.
  16. I agree wholeheartedly with that recommendation. Outside of the PJ material, the only Baker I have is this series of discs from the mid 60s. I find them to be excellent. The titles are "Smokin'", "Boppin' with the Chet Baker Quintet", "Comin' on with the Chet Baker Quintet", "Cool Burnin' with the Chet Baker Quintet", "Groovin' with the Chet Baker Quintet" Chet plays mostly flugelhorn. Coleman is amazing. Lot more hard bop sounding than his PJ stuff to be sure. There are no vocals, either.
  17. Definitely in the car to and from work. I have my own office, so I listen all day long, though someimes the music slips into the background as I concentrate on work. At home, sometimes at dinner, then usually late at night. I also have a CD player/clock radio at the bedside along with a pair of headphones.
  18. Tod Collectors Choice and Audiophile USA have been selling Mosaic sets for years. Selected sets have been available in stores for quite some time as well. But I'll grant you that there are more sets available from more sources now than in the past. I kind of look at these as buying opportunities. Lots of sites discount their new releases pretty substantially. I picked up The Four Freshmen and Lee/Christy sets at a nice discount. I'm hoping they put the Hackett set out at the retail level. I'd like not to have to pay full price for that one given what I've read, but I'm curious enough to buy it. Is an expanded retail presence due to slumping catalog sales? Because of EMI's influence? Who knows? They don't advertise anywhere I know, so maybe this is there way of getting the word out. At any rate, I'm not ready to go so far as to say that Mosaic is full shit, but if you ask me about Tom Evered, I might just have a few choice words for you.
  19. I doubt it's you, Ed. I've got a VERY small amount of "name recognition" over there from my musical endeavors over the years. That probably accounts for whatever welcome I've received, that and the freindly "cross-posters" like Kevin, Omar, Uli, Jim Dye, and a few others who know me from both boards. But it IS a more diverse bunch over there, "socially" speaking, than I had imagined. Pick and choose (and wait), I suppose, is the way to break in over there, if that's what you want. I've said it before, and I'll say it again - I VERY much like the vibe here, and that it's a ".org" rather than a ".com". Even if this site never blossoms into a megasite (maybe it will, maybe it won't, it's cool either way), it's great to have a place to hung out with old friends away from the outside world, cyber or otherwise. I've always dug hanging at after hours clubs, and to know that right now there's an after hours joint open 24/7 is just WAY too cool! I've tried striking up a few conversation there periodically over the few years I've been on line. Very little response - it's a tough bunch. When the Blue Note Board first started to unravel I was hoping I did not have to go over there to get my jazz fix. I'm glad that this board and AAJ have filled the void. I still lurk over there on occasion to see if I can get any infomation, though.
  20. Texas Davis. Doesn't quite have a ring to it. If only I had a middle name.
  21. I found the good Dr Freud's posts amusing and sometimes outright funny. He had a way of appearing at the most opportune time in the course of a thread. The Red Menace was even better, IMO. Ever check out his interests? Hot Tubbing? Come on - that's good stuff. Wonder if he picked up his Four Freshmen set? With all the vitriol that was spewn in certain sections of the BNBB I found these two characters providing a little light hearted relief.
  22. I became a fan of Chet Baker as I started picking up OOP Mosaics. I bought a couple of OOP Bakers from Scott at Mosaic a couple of years ago and have really become a fan. The vocals are really an acquired taste. My first exposure to Baker was the song from the Round Midnight soundtrack. I could not figure out what all the fuss was about. But when I started picking up the Mosaics, his body of work really came into focus for me. I love the sound and feel of his horn and really dig his vocal style. I have not gone too much beyond his PJ material, which I find to be outstanding.
  23. I've got the Mosaic LP set. Fabulous music. I'll definitely have to check out Consecration and The Last Waltz.
  24. Hey Victor Welcome to the board. I'm glad you came over to check things out.
  25. Bertrand No hard feelings at all.
