'Classical' music from the last 50 years (or so)
StarThrower replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Classical Discussion
Haven't gotten around to them is a better way of putting it than ignored. I do have several Carter discs. I've only listened to one Boulez recording. The Rituel/Eclat/Multiples on Sony. It's interesting you mentioned a decade of listening, because I've said to myself that I'm trying to cram 10 years of listening into two. Most of the composers on that list are new to me in the past few years, and some only in the past few months. And I forgot to mention the Second Viennese School. I love Alban Berg, and several Schoenberg and Webern pieces. And hell, I forgot to mention Varese, Ravel, Dutilleux, and Poulenc. Too many internet music forums turning me on to too much music. I suppose I'm trying to make up for lost time. I was mostly absorbed with jazz oriented music over the past 25-30 years. -

Black Saint/Soul Note Box Sets
StarThrower replied to romualdo's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I could have made good use of the Murray box 12-15 years ago, but I've lost interest at this point. I can't get enough of the 80s Bill Frisell sound, so I've got to get the Motian box. I'd gladly pay 5 dollars more per set if they would have included a small booklet with readable type. The microscopic print on the original album cover facsimiles is useless. -

I have a few Joachim tracks on the two CMP Records samplers I own. There's a solo record, Dynamics that I want to pick up. Some of the other CMP titles are too expensive. Too bad the catalog is in limbo. I just got the George Russell Soul Note box, and I love it! I also have the Threadgill box. Next will be Paul Motian, and Cecil Taylor. Maybe Mal Waldron too!

'Classical' music from the last 50 years (or so)
StarThrower replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Classical Discussion
I've been listening to these composers lately. Alfred Schnittke Hans Werner Henze Aulis Sallinen Magnus Lindberg Per Norgard Penderecki William Schuman Conlon Nancarrow Karl Hartmann Gyorgy Ligeti Lutoslawski -
I don't want another Blue Note album by anybody. In fact, I've heard all of the bebop/hardbop I need to hear. I want to hear more from the Black Saint/Soul Note artists, and ECM, and other contemporary labels. And any creative composition for larger ensembles. John Hollenbeck is a current favorite. I need to get some Joachim Kuhn too. Some electric albums were recommended to me, but I'm not interested. He's a great pianist, and I want the acoustic stuff. Just like McCoy Tyner. They create their own electricity.

Those are some hideous CD covers. What happened to the Impulse aesthetic? It's gone the way of cheapness, like the last two ECM titles I purchased.

German Jazz on MPS/Mood/Inakustik re-issues, etc
StarThrower replied to StarThrower's topic in Re-issues
There's also a nice 2-CD set of Dauner's solo keyboard albums, and Volker Kriegel's Journal/Palazzo Blue. I thought about picking up the Manfred Schoof on ECM, but they did a half ass job on the re-issue, omitting some tracks instead of making it a 3-CD set. -
German Jazz on MPS/Mood/Inakustik re-issues, etc
StarThrower replied to StarThrower's topic in Re-issues
Yeah, the Mangelsdorff/Dauner is part of a 2-CD set re-issued on Inakustik label. These are selling dirt cheap at Deep Discount. 8.95-10.95 for 2 CDs. -
I'm looking for more good stuff from Germany. I just ordered some of Volker Kriegel's MPS albums from Wayside Music, and a few Inakustik re-issues by Kriegel, Wolfgang Dauner, and United Jazz + Rock Ensemble. Who else is worth listening to in the modern jazz/electric jazz/fusion genre? The only other CDs I have are by Albert Mangelsdorff. BTW, the Inakustik CDs are 25% off at Deep Discount until June 19th. Same for Promising Music/MPS.

Dafnis Prieto is a fine Cuban drummer and composer. I really like his Absolute Quintet CD. Great compositions and superb band! Michel Camilo-One More Once, this big band album is irresistible. Full of great melodies, superb arrangements, and phenomenal playing. I'm also a big fan of Brazilian legends Egberto Gismonti, and Hermeto Pascoal. Two truly great multi-instrumentalists and composers. Guillermo Klein sounds really good. I think I'm going to pick up the Los Gauchos III 2-CD set, and Filtros. I also like Ignacio Berroa's Codes CD on Blue Note. Some muscular Cuban jazz with heavy percussion and a progressive edge.

The Black Saint/Soul Note boxes are a good deal! -
I'm gonna miss Gil Scott-Heron. I used to play his music on my radio show quite a bit. The listeners really dug Gil. I got see him perform last June at the Syracuse Jazz Festival. He looked a bit shabby, but was still sharp as a tack, and very funny! RIP

Mingus on Candid (especially with Ted Curson)
StarThrower replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Discography
Maybe it'll click for me someday? It's never been a favorite amongst the Mingus or Dolphy canon. I do like some of the other stuff on the Candid Dolphy CD. -
Henry Threadgill

Threadgill does seem to be contradicting himself there. There's no doubt all of the various cultures were influencing each other. -
