  1. I think her Songbook albums are beautiful music. Not jazz, per se, just American music. I like her catalog a lot overall, own plenty (probably most) but there is much silliness at times that I do find virtually unlistenable, and I find the late 70's work heartbreaking due to the deterioration in her voice.
  2. Shout out on those Free America titles. Fascinating music, great prices. Shepp was a monster in that period, his prime.
  3. That's also my favorite song by them!
  4. Really? That would be great! I'll look into that, thanks for the heads-up!
  5. Not sure what's more depressing, the horrid "ran the grammy tables" song (though it does have a catchy bassline) or the horrid "cowboy rap" song that was #1 for 19 weeks. I'm 30 years past caring anymore about what's new/current in the pop world. Grunge and New Jack together killed it for me when I came to realize there was absolutely nothing on mainstream radio I wanted to hear. Very few exceptions since then.
  6. "Our Kind of Sabi" is a great album and an enlightened choice! Also love his work on Stan Getz's "Dynasty" (which would also look good on your list unless you go with "Captain Marvel" instead).
  7. Please note that the $21 showing as from me was donated on behalf of ejp626, who is donating the proceeds of his CD sale to me!
  8. PM sent on the Jack Wilson and the Sam Jones
  9. He did some really nice stuff on Sceptor (they leased some of the early stuff). "Billy and Sue" is a forgotten gem, "I'm So Lonesome, I Could Cry" is great - to me, the definitive version.
  10. Thanks, she does do amazing work, and people are very thankful. Much of it timewise is actually tedious artwork, and she's 35 years into this work, so she has mental bandwidth during those stretches.
  11. My wife listens to it while she does her work (creating facial prostheses for patients, such as a nose or ear for someone who lost theirs to cancer or an accident. 95% of the work is done alone in her lab working with her hands, the other 5% is contact with the patient ). We do have the book! I went with the audible trial membership, so she has access for now - would still like to get the unabridged CD set at some point for her, as she likes to relisten to favorites (has done Lord of the Rings at least 30 times!).
  12. Saw that but haven't researched the terms thx.
  13. Love "Another Country"! Fine album.
  14. Longshot, I realize, but my wife would love to have this. If anyone has it or knows where I can get it at a reasonable price, all leads appreciated. It's a great book, and I went through the library version of the unabridged audiobook many years ago.
  15. He did really nice work with Art Farmer in the mid-60's.
  16. And you get the benefit of having it shipped in short order by Lon rather than "whenever, maybe" by Mosaic .
  17. Different album than the one I a heard. Mine was the trio album with Tucker and Chico Hamilton, not the duo album with Tucker. Any thoughts on the one I heard? I certainly find something like this to have jazz value, at least in a Gene Harris - Ray Bryant - etc. sort of way.
  18. I've never heard the Fresh Sound CD's of these sessions. They generally do a nice job. I did fine getting the booklet out, but it is really tight in there, 100 pages. I love "Iron Man", "Mandrake", and especially "Burning Spear" most of all, and all were on 'Iron Man'. But it is good to have the session combined on one set, and the alternate takes are nice (though "Crow Jim" is still a pretentious mess to my ears, with the bizarre operatic vocal).
  19. Stunning. I've never been able to REALLY appreciate this material until now, the dozens of previous releases of 'Iron Man' and, especially 'Conversations' (aka 'The Eric Dolphy Memorial Album', aka 'Music Matador') being so shoddy in every aspect:
  20. Listening to "Introducing Freddy Gambrell" with Chico Hamilton. Really nice, Tatum-influenced stuff, some of it more in, some more heading out. Have never heard of him before. Anyone have any thoughts or info on him?
