Happy Birthday! (Deus)
EKE BBB replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Volkher: If it´s your birthday actually, FELIZ CUMPLEAÑOS!!!! If not ... ... well, I´ll leave it for Chuck! -
No comments from our American members? Postal Service is really slow in the Empire! B-)

That set has been in my wish-list for too long! When I was writing my comments on this BFT, I looked for a Prez recording of "Don´t be that way" and I found the Spirituals to Swing recording of Basie´s Kansas City Five, but I thought all were live recordings in that set. Now I´ve found there were a few studio sessions. And I was almost sure that it was Basie on piano, but I was too fearful of being battered if I was wrong... Prez ALSO lives!

You did not want to test the Brotzmann waters?? Your list looks good. Know you will provide CDRs when you get those, OK? Just kidding, Chuck I´ve recently tested Brötzmann waters: his duo with Hamid Drake ("Dried rat dog" also on Okka) that I like a lot, and a 2 CD live date (Karlsruhe) of the Chicago Tentet that Flurin kindly provided me. In fact I was planning to pick some more Brötzmann, but asked for recommendations in a Spanish jazz Yahoo group, they shot them, and I took the plunge.... and after sending my email to Chuck I realize I hadn´t included any Brötzmann. And as for the CDR... don´t let Chuck know, or he will charge some extra fees for "authorized illegal distribution"

I´d really prefer garrote!

The 1st, 4th, and 6th I think are the better within that batch. None of them, if you were serious, are anywhere near as heavy/noise, if you were serious, as you're implying. The closest to post-bop mainstream jazz, and indeed in parts very close, is Nuclear Assembly Hall, which I quite like. Anderson/McCall is free-ish but in a very disciplined and cohesive way, well you'll hear what I mean, and DKV plays and builds on a lot of grooves so it's not much difficult, if at all, to get into - apart from the relatively shorter solo sections it's usually a groove or vamp kick-started by Kessler and Drake that Vandermark then plays over and after that it pretty much developes as a result of the close interaction between the three. Some tunes in Trigonometry, I think, go on a bit too much without enough content/variety. Thanks, gnhrtg! I´ll take your comments into consideration when listening to those discs, as I´m a newbie to this kind of jazz. And no, I wasn´t serious about noise. Just kidding.

I'm there even less-maybe twice a week. I was wondering why I didn't see Chris pop in on the Wynton Marsalis appreciation thread a few months ago though.... Looks like that "Wynton Marsalis Korner II" thread got really hot! But AAJ moderators deleted all the feuding posts, so we lost the fun! B-) (And I´m not criticizing their policy. They can do what they want, do they?)

Just ordered this Okka batch, directly from Chuck Nessa: 12001 Fred Anderson / Steve McCall "Vintage Duets" 12003 Marilyn Crispell, Fred Anderson, Hamid Drake "Destiny" 12014 Fred Anderson / DKV Trio 12030 DKV Trio Live in Wels & Chicago 1998 NEW (2 DISKS) 12042 DKV Trio "Trigonometry" recorded "live" in Rochester, NY and Kalamazoo, MI (2 discs) 12049 Atomic/School Days "Nuclear Assembly Hall" (2 discs) (I´ve also posted this in the "What music did you buy today" thread) What should I expect from these discs? Only noise?

Those two are on my wish-list. Let´s wait till Christmas time!

Here´s the Spanish Inquisition! Capital Punishment for you, brownie! (I have no idea if that disc is good or bad -in fact I always rely on brownie´s tastes and criteria-, but as Inquisidor Mayor del Reino, I have to decree capital punishment)

Try with Edmond Hall and you won´t be disappointed!

Thanks for providing us with this very nice compilation of wonderful mostly-swing music (as expected ), Milan! Good for the average organissimo member to discover there´s jazz before bop! And good for FunnyRatters to discover there´s jazz before Coltrane! Being at work, I don´t have access to my collection or my database, so maybe you´ve included some music you sent me before (did you?) or even music that I sent you before (did you?). With both options, mikeweil´s BFT rule number one would apply and it´d make me feel completely ashamed! Just a few guesses/comments for now: 1.- This is “In the mood”, but this is not Glen Miller´s Orchestra, for sure! This version is a real jazz version. No idea who´s playing, though. 4.- Jimmie Lunceford? 5.- Charlie Parker playing “Star eyes”. The phrasing, the tone, the total command of the horn, everything says it´s HIM. I don´t have too many Bird live dates, so I can´t guess which recording this low-fidelity track was taken from. Benedetti? Did you finally pick it? 6.- Hey, this is about jazz masters. Milan´s favorite musician playing “Don´t be that way”. 8.- Benny Goodman / Lionel Hampton / Charlie Christian date. Additional research needed to identify tune and recording. 9.- Old Testament Basie´s worst sounding broadcast ever! 10.- What a change of pace regarding sound quality! 11.- How could you avoid including Lady Day! Beautiful rendition of “Any old time” with some very long-lived clarinetist´s orchestra. Couldn´t find a link, but it´s on volume 4 of the complete 1933-44 master takes in some Spanish label, and in volume 6 of the complete collection on some French label. 12.- Woody Herman´s Four Brothers. 13.- I know the song, but can´t bring a name. Hell, I´ll check this one! 15.- This one was easy. Track 6 from this one: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...=glance&s=music 16.- Tune is “Outskirts of town” (Waller/Razaf). Who´s singing? 20.- Gillespie´s tune “Oop Bop Sh'Bam”. But not by his orchestra. Googlin´ research brings Billy Eckstine. 21.- Maxine Sullivan. I DO NEED to get a great deal of recordings by this lady! 22.- “Gone with the wind” in Session 22 from this discography: http://csis.pace.edu/~varden/navarro/discog.html 23.- “Lady´s in love with you”. Her voice sounds familiar. 24.- More BASIE to end this disc. Great music, Milan! I´ll try to check some tracks when I get home.

I voted yesterday.... and now I can´t remember who I voted for! That´s what happens with this kind of polls... each day you´d vote for a different musician!
-
I voted for JJ (not too original, eh?) But I agree with Chuck and Brownian Motion, and would have included Dicky Wells, JC Higginbotham, Jimmy Harrison, Claude Jones, Benny Morton, Vic Dickenson... and Miff Mole! BTW: how many polls are left?
-
Another top-notch baritone player, not mentioned, is Ernie Caceres.
-
I have to go with Harry Carney!
-
don't get burned. How could I?
-
Milan: your disc arrived. I´ll try to listen to it "carefully" in a few days.

Have you ever heard/heard of Mr. Five by Five? -_-

"definately" vs. "definitely"
EKE BBB replied to neveronfriday's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
nope, we only have "oorlog." But old Dutch (neerlandés)? The official Diccionario de la Real Academia de la Lengua Española says so. They probably picked that up when we were fighting the Spanish for our freedom from the mid-1500s to the mid-1600s... B-) they had 80 years for that you know. You want warre? -
