Check the current version of our Tete Montoliu Discography on Michael Fitzgerald´s Jazzdiscography.com website. Some unissued sessions have been added (among them, two for Fantasy label), alongside some more broadcastings and live recordings and many additions and corrections to previously listed sessions. More to come!

Help needed on Japanese issues of Tete Montoliu recordings We´re currently working to include Japanese editions (both CD and vinyl) of Tete Montoliu releases (both leader and sideman dates) in the Issue Index of our Discography. Lord lists a great deal of them, but as many mistakes are included there, we want to check correct catalog numbers, release dates, tracks included in each disc and track order. As I know many of you usually buy Japanese pressings, -could you provide us with discographical information from your discs? -or could you give us links and/or addresses and/or telephone numbers for Japanese labels or Japanese branches of domestic labels? -or could you give us links and/or addresses and/or telephone numbers for some Japanese sellers (both vinyl and CD)? I know of Earlyrecords.com from Hiroshi Tano, but they currently don´t list any Tete issue. Please post them in this thread or send them to me via email to bhdezfdez@telefonica.net (I´ve also posted this in the "Tete Montoliu sessionography" thread) Thanks in advance, Agustín

I voted for Something Else as well.

you'll get it for the same price from amazon.de marketplace. nice site anyhow, good to know things like this are available. I was at the Reduta club a couple of nights when I travelled to Prague three years ago, and its walls are full of nice pictures... many of them of former President Bill! B-)

I don't have a clue. Somebody posted a picture asking for identification. I wanted to say it was possibly Jimmy Harris (trumpeter in the Erskine Hawkins band) and discovered I could not post. Chuck: Are you sure you´ve been banned? Look what Rooster states in this thread: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=14915

I'm there even less-maybe twice a week. I was wondering why I didn't see Chris pop in on the Wynton Marsalis appreciation thread a few months ago though.... http://forums.allaboutjazz.com/showthread....appreciation%2A Oh, now I´ve found the one you mention!!! http://forums.allaboutjazz.com/showthread....=%2Amarsalis%2A It´s about resident misanthropes..., I guess

This is quite biased, IMHO! If Django´s music doesn´t have swing, who on hell has? I wasn't talking about Django! I thing that Bireli's records as a child prodigy are monotonous. Sorry, I misunderstood your post! :rsmile: I can´t comment on early Biréli as I haven´t heard that stuff. "Move" has some quite impressing uptempo numbers and all the tracks I´ve heard have a very contagious swing!

What live music are you going to see tonight?
EKE BBB replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Just came from the Vienna Art Orchestra - Big Band Poesie concert, closing Madrid Jazz Festival. -

Oops, now I´ve seen you can listen to (but not download) a lot of tracks from some of his albums on MP3 format from his website.

The other day I was riding on my car listening to Radio 3, and they played most of his last disc. I was highly impressed by his playing, which comes directly from Django Reinhardt (I´m a great fan of Django, BTW). I´ve decided to pick a few of his discs. Could you recommend some of them? Biréli Lagrène Official Website Thanks in advance!

yes! Could you elaborate, please?

And doesn´t Tatum play with a piano trio on that early "Tiger rag"? ...Or was it a piano duo?
-
And as quite a few relatively unknown pianists have been mentioned in this thread... ...check Albert Sanz, a young (well, not so young anymore ) Spanish pianist. From his few recordings as a leader I dig "Des d´aqui" (Satchmo Records), co-leaded with bassist David Mengual. Two I haven´t heard yet are "An introduction to Kalifactors" (Fresh Sound) and "Los Guys" (Fresh Sound), to my knowledge his last recording. AMG Review

Glad to hear you like Chano Domínguez! I´ve seen him many times live and he´s a wonderful player... ... though some of our most knowledgeable members who listened to my BFT#13 didn´t like his solo playing too much...
-
And as for my preferences.... do I need to mention Tete Montoliu?
-
Adrián Iaes is a superb pianist, IMHO. His mix of Argentinean music and jazz is really interesting. Saw him live last year in Madrid and was greatly impressed.... well you have to like bandoneón... I have and enjoy "Las tardecitas de Minton´s" (Acqua Records, 1999) and "Tango reflections" (Ensayo, 2000). But haven´t heard "Nostalgias y otros vicios" (1998), "Round midnight y otros tangos" (2002) or "Las cosas tienen movimiento" (2003)

Stuff Smith Hot Stuff LABEL: Storyville Records CATALOG NUMBER: 101 8396 GENRE: swing/modern jazz BARCODE: 717101839629 Stuff Smith, Svend Asmussen - violin & vocal Kenny Drew, Jørgen Borch - piano Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Erik Mølbæk - bass Alex Riel, Bjarne Rostvold - drums Skip It / The Girl From Ipanema / Tenderly / Take The A Train / Bugle Blues / I Can't Get Started / Mack The Knife / Blues For Timme / Old Stinkin' Blues / The C-Jam Blues / Caravan / Timme's Blues / Oh, Lady Be Good! This CD was recorded in Copenhagen, Denmark, and consists of a live concert in Jazzhus Montmartre in 1965 and a radio studio session (with violinist Svend Asmussen) in 1966. The repertoire on the CD (74 min./13 tunes) consists of some standards (George & Ira Gershwin, Kurt Weil, Duke Ellington) and five Stuff Smith originals. The two rhythm groups are comprised of top Danish jazz musicians, plus the American piano star, Kenny Drew. The relatively long playing-time of the tracks allows Stuff Smith, Svend Asmussen and Kenny Drew to do some extended soloing. Many jazz fans will agree that Stuff Smith is the best jazz violinist of all time, and this CD presents him at his very best. The overwhelming energy, creativity, drive and humor in his performance is further enhanced by an unmatched musical virtuosity. Don Ewell Denver Concert w. Barbara Dane LABEL: Storyville Records CATALOG NUMBER: 101 8379 GENRE: stride piano jazz BARCODE: 717101837922 Don Ewell - piano, Charles Burrell - bass, Barbara Dane - vocals, guitar Jelly Roll Morton Medley: I Thought I heard Buddy Bolden Say - Winin' Boy - Swet Substitute / The Pearls / Kansas City Stomp / Oh, Papa / Cake Walkin' Babies From Home / Earl Hines Medley: - Blues In Thirds - A Monday Date - Rosetta / See, See Rider / I Ain't Gonna Give Nobody None Of My Jelly Roll / Fats Waller Medley: - Keepin' Out Of Mischief Now - Ain't Misbehavin' - Handful Of Keys / Good Morning Blues / Wild Women Don't Have No Blues / Nobody Knows You When You Are Down And Out / San Fransisco Bay Blues / Trouble In Mind / Careless Love The 15 tunes (69 min.) on this CD were recorded live in concert in Denver, Colorado, in 1966. Six of the numbers have never been previously released; the rest were originally released on LP on the Pumpkin record label. Don Ewell plays stride piano, strongly influenced by Jelly Roll Morton and Fats Waller. The repertoire on the CD is based on compositions by the great stride pianists Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller and Earl Hines. Don Ewell did not do much recording and therefore, as prominent jazz journalist Alun Morgan says: "We are fortunate to have this (CD) representing Don Ewell at his best." Ewell, himself, was very pleased that night in Denver, Colorado; everything was right:the atmosphere, the piano, the recording and, not least of all - the band and the music. Besides being a great stride piano player, Ewell could definitely play the blues - just listen to his version of "See See Rider" on this CD.

which makes these sets utterly collectible! who needs numbers and pink slips when they can have an extra backcover-page? gottahaveitgottahaveitgottahaveit!!!!!!!! I will trade you my Mulligan for your Mulligan plus one other full fledge Mosaic set of your choice. Shit, I think I threw that backcover thing away as soon as I had the Mulligan... Should have sold it for big $$ to some strange Moose... So, as without that backcover thing, your European copy of that Mulligan Mosaic isn´t worth a single euro, you should send me that original boxed set for free.... you know my address!

EKE BBB replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Last night, double program concert in the Madrid Jazz Festival (more than 3 hours of live jazz!!!): -Larry Willis (p) & Miguel Ángel Chastang (b) Sextet, with Tony Moreno on drums and a front line of Eddie Henderson (tp), Frank Lacy (tb) and Sonny Fortune (as, fl), paying homage to the late Elvin Jones -Ron Carter Foursight, who started (and almost ended) their concert with a 65 minutes suite. Very enjoyable! -
Probably anybody having "DUKE ELLINGTON: Day by Day, Film by Film" by Dr. Klaus Stratemann, would help much more.
