  1. Adrián Iaes is a superb pianist, IMHO. His mix of Argentinean music and jazz is really interesting. Saw him live last year in Madrid and was greatly impressed.... well you have to like bandoneón... I have and enjoy "Las tardecitas de Minton´s" (Acqua Records, 1999) and "Tango reflections" (Ensayo, 2000). But haven´t heard "Nostalgias y otros vicios" (1998), "Round midnight y otros tangos" (2002) or "Las cosas tienen movimiento" (2003)

The 26 tunes with Billle Holiday on this 77 min, CD span the years 19401949. There are eleven different sessions on the CD both live and studio ranging from a duo number with piano to octets and full orchestra. lncluded on the CD are Billie Holiday’s last official recordings with tenor saxophonist Lester Young and pianist Teddy Wilson. The repertoire consists mostly of Billie Holiday ballad and blues standards. Accompanying Billie Holiday on this CD are many other masters af jazz, including Roy Eldridge, Red Norvo, Don Byas, Benny Carter, Barney Bigard, Coleman Hawkins, Jimmy Hamilton, Hot Lips Page and Art Tatum. 9 Fantastic live sessions include the Esquire AllAmerican Poll Winners Concert from 1944, an Apollo Theater concert from 1945, and eight tunes from the Just Jazz Concert in Los Angeles with the Red Norvo Septet in 1949. Billie Holiday sings wonderfully throughout: check out her blues renditions of “St. Louis Blues” and “Loveless Love”. Stuff Smith Hot Stuff LABEL: Storyville Records CATALOG NUMBER: 101 8396 GENRE: swing/modern jazz BARCODE: 717101839629 Stuff Smith, Svend Asmussen - violin & vocal Kenny Drew, Jørgen Borch - piano Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Erik Mølbæk - bass Alex Riel, Bjarne Rostvold - drums Skip It / The Girl From Ipanema / Tenderly / Take The A Train / Bugle Blues / I Can't Get Started / Mack The Knife / Blues For Timme / Old Stinkin' Blues / The C-Jam Blues / Caravan / Timme's Blues / Oh, Lady Be Good! This CD was recorded in Copenhagen, Denmark, and consists of a live concert in Jazzhus Montmartre in 1965 and a radio studio session (with violinist Svend Asmussen) in 1966. The repertoire on the CD (74 min./13 tunes) consists of some standards (George & Ira Gershwin, Kurt Weil, Duke Ellington) and five Stuff Smith originals. The two rhythm groups are comprised of top Danish jazz musicians, plus the American piano star, Kenny Drew. The relatively long playing-time of the tracks allows Stuff Smith, Svend Asmussen and Kenny Drew to do some extended soloing. Many jazz fans will agree that Stuff Smith is the best jazz violinist of all time, and this CD presents him at his very best. The overwhelming energy, creativity, drive and humor in his performance is further enhanced by an unmatched musical virtuosity. Don Ewell Denver Concert w. Barbara Dane LABEL: Storyville Records CATALOG NUMBER: 101 8379 GENRE: stride piano jazz BARCODE: 717101837922 Don Ewell - piano, Charles Burrell - bass, Barbara Dane - vocals, guitar Jelly Roll Morton Medley: I Thought I heard Buddy Bolden Say - Winin' Boy - Swet Substitute / The Pearls / Kansas City Stomp / Oh, Papa / Cake Walkin' Babies From Home / Earl Hines Medley: - Blues In Thirds - A Monday Date - Rosetta / See, See Rider / I Ain't Gonna Give Nobody None Of My Jelly Roll / Fats Waller Medley: - Keepin' Out Of Mischief Now - Ain't Misbehavin' - Handful Of Keys / Good Morning Blues / Wild Women Don't Have No Blues / Nobody Knows You When You Are Down And Out / San Fransisco Bay Blues / Trouble In Mind / Careless Love The 15 tunes (69 min.) on this CD were recorded live in concert in Denver, Colorado, in 1966. Six of the numbers have never been previously released; the rest were originally released on LP on the Pumpkin record label. Don Ewell plays stride piano, strongly influenced by Jelly Roll Morton and Fats Waller. The repertoire on the CD is based on compositions by the great stride pianists Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller and Earl Hines. Don Ewell did not do much recording and therefore, as prominent jazz journalist Alun Morgan says: "We are fortunate to have this (CD) representing Don Ewell at his best." Ewell, himself, was very pleased that night in Denver, Colorado; everything was right:the atmosphere, the piano, the recording and, not least of all - the band and the music. Besides being a great stride piano player, Ewell could definitely play the blues - just listen to his version of "See See Rider" on this CD.
  3. which makes these sets utterly collectible! who needs numbers and pink slips when they can have an extra backcover-page? gottahaveitgottahaveitgottahaveit!!!!!!!! I will trade you my Mulligan for your Mulligan plus one other full fledge Mosaic set of your choice. Shit, I think I threw that backcover thing away as soon as I had the Mulligan... Should have sold it for big $$ to some strange Moose... So, as without that backcover thing, your European copy of that Mulligan Mosaic isn´t worth a single euro, you should send me that original boxed set for free.... you know my address!
  4. Just read this thread for the first time. My thoughts are with you. Be strong, I´m sure Alice will recover soon.
  5. From duke-lym:
  6. Last night, double program concert in the Madrid Jazz Festival (more than 3 hours of live jazz!!!): -Larry Willis (p) & Miguel Ángel Chastang (b) Sextet, with Tony Moreno on drums and a front line of Eddie Henderson (tp), Frank Lacy (tb) and Sonny Fortune (as, fl), paying homage to the late Elvin Jones -Ron Carter Foursight, who started (and almost ended) their concert with a 65 minutes suite. Very enjoyable!
  7. Probably anybody having "DUKE ELLINGTON: Day by Day, Film by Film" by Dr. Klaus Stratemann, would help much more.
  8. From the information I have handy: There´s a telecast recorded at Granada Chelsea studios, London (January 22, 1963) titled "Duke Ellington & His Famous Orchestra," and broadcasted February 13, 1963. Included in "London: The Great Concerts" CD ( MusicMasters 65106-2)
  9. In Dallas, it's http://www.elfenix.com/HISTORY.HTML I´m afraid I don´t like Tex-Mex food.... .... but I don´t like Cigars either!
  10. Dan: I replied to that e-mail (I think it was yesterday). I don´t have access to my mail folders now, but will re-send it tonight. Hope there´s no trouble with my mail account again! Anyway... ... thanks again for those broadcasts, and above all, for your interest in this project!!!
  11. Just received this one, and I´m really enjoying it. Nice and tasteful piano solo.
  12. Did anybody mention this one?: PEDRO ITURRALDE QUARTET FEATURING HAMPTON HAWES BLUE NOTE [EUROPE] 101 Track list: On Green Dolphin Street Black Forest Blues Autumn Leaves Oleo Moonlight in Vermont My Funny Valentine Pedro Iturralde (ts, bars, ss, fl), Hampton Hawes (p), Eric Peter (b), Peer Wyboris (d) Recorded in Madrid, Spain, February, 1968. It´s a great CD. As Hampton Hawes was playing on a two weeks engagement at Whiskey Jazz Club (Madrid), Juan Claudio Cifuentes "Cifu", one of the best known jazz-radio men in Spain, managed to get them to the Hispavox studio, recording this disc at three o´clock in the morning! Distributed outside Spain by Blue Note.

    Why I hate Miles

Up! (I still have to go through all these posts... )
  14. Chris Sheridan wrote the notes to both Mosaic Count Basie Complete Roulette Live Recordings and the Complete Roulette Studio Recordings. But I'm pretty sure, you already got these... Yep! But only CD-R thanks to a member of this board, long after these sets went OOP! And no booklets...
  15. Reading Chris Sheridan´s absolutely fantastic (IMHO) liner notes for Tete Montoliu´s "Tête à Tete" for Steeplechase (1976), I wonder if he did many others. I´d be interested in picking those discs, if only for his descriptions!
  16. Just received an unsolicited email (SPAM?) from this lady. Maya Nova website Who´s that girl?
  17. I hope everything´s OK with the three images now!
  18. Count me in, Milan. Mail sent.
  19. Is this new gloomy color design somehow related with November 2 results?
  20. Well, I´ll finally start this AOTW thread, to keep (trying to keep) the ball rolling: Cecil Taylor - Silent tongues [Freedom, 1974] Solo piano. Live at the Montreaux Jazz Festival.
  21. It has been reconfirmed by Chris that it will be 8 CDs Thanks for the update, Fran. And welcome on board! Hope you stick around here: it´d great to have some more old-timers at organissimo (as opposed to BlueNoters or RatRacers ... )
